Here are the daylight pics of the Cereus remember I warned you they are ugly! Also got a few of the flat non prickly cactus under another palm.

It has a few buds on it. I'll try to get photos

of them too.

1. the base the little white fuzzy things are the buds. As they grow they start to get pointy, frilly and red in color.

2. up the trunk

3 a different angle a little further up the trunk

4.5.6.7.these are pics of another night bloomer, without pricklies all over, just one or 2 per joint and not so small.

It is hard to see under the fronds but I have one bud opening tonight and one probably tomorrow night.

Most of the inner petals of a night bloomer are brilliant white and bright yellows to attract the bugs for pollination I would assume.

The outer petals have been many many shades of oranges reds greens and yellow I've only seen one very rare purple and one blue.

I am not an expert, I just know what I like!

Chelone - yes, I use a walker all the time - outdoors at least. (I can use a quad-cane in a house and this house is set up so that I can do some walking around without support...) The main problem with the particular mulch path at that estate was the material was too loose and the base too soft so it took a lot of effort to push the walker. It wasn't quite as bad a pea gravel - impossible to push a walker through that stuff! The path also was a bit too steeply pitched to the sides in places so the walker had a tendency to want to slide sideways. The path was running along a creek, through a wetland area so the ground was quite soft. The same bark over a very firm base would probably been much easier to walk on. My paths here are about 1/3 concrete sand; 2/3 pine bark mulch. Our soil is quite heavy clay so is quite firm - as long as it is not too wet! Only the 'wet corner' area is a problem in the spring. Over time the concrete sand has migrated to the bottom and combined with the clay to make a nice base. The pine mulch - quite fine stuff, not big nuggets - breaks down reasonably fast so it needs topping up every 4-5 years. When we first laid out the paths, we put the mulch/sand mix down and then went over it with one of those water filled roller things to pack it down. Next spring we need to do another layer of the mulch/sand mix on all the paths here. The pine bark keeps the paths looking natural in the woodland areas while the concrete sand gives firmness. In the front garden the paths have been topped up with just the pine mulch so often now that the paths can be a bit too loose in texture. But the clay soil underneath is heavy enough that the path is still quite firm. On the whole, I think the firm base under the surface material is probably the important thing as long as the surface material isn't so thick and loose that the base gets 'lost'. When we put the path material down it was probably no more than 1-1 1/2" thick once it was packed down - maybe less... A couple of years ago the Sweet Woodruff under the pines was starting to spread across the path. I was able to just run the blade of one of those J-shaped crack weeder tools along between the Sweet Woodruff roots and the path surface and peel the SW up and roll it back like a carpet! The path was perfectly smooth and intact underneath - the roots hadn't penetrated beyond the loose surface layer of decomposing pine needles.

Frank, I don't think you're a dork, at all! There's nothing wrong with being sentimental, and remembering good things... even if they do make your eyes tear up. I can clearly remember the beautiful Bleeding Hearts my Grandma grew... and her luscious Peonies... and I half laugh/half cry when I think about all the plants my Mom killed, even though she tried so hard... she just didn't possess the gardener gene! It skipped a generation! Actually, Ryan, I have my Calla Lily planted in a very well-draining medium, in a clay pot. It bloomed and grew ok last season, but wasn't really that impressive. It was a $2 bagged rhizome from Lowe's, I think. Not the highest quality, I'm sure. I'm just surprised it hasn't begun to grow yet this year. I haven't had a chance to look at that website with the Irises yet... but I'm going to! I never miss a chance to drool at online photos of gorgeous flowers! I didn't know that those fountain pumps could be adjusted... you learn something new every day! Thanks for that, Ryan! That little piece of information has just widened my choice for an indoor water thingy... I need to up the humidity, and I think a little fountain will help. Hi everyone, It has been downpouring all day so I'm glad I got pictures when I did! The clematis look like soggy kleenex and some of the vines let go in the wind. It's supposed to keep on pouring so all those roses opening are mush and the gorgeous peony blooms are laying in the mud. Fortunately I did snap some pictures yesterday and I'm going to do another post real soon. I appreciate all your warm and enthusiastic responses! Kay...it could very well be H.G. Young but I never knew the name. It was a mislabel from one of the big box stores and was supposed to be Jackmanii which it obviously isn't. Rita...I have pretty much exhausted my land of rocks after making so many rock beds. Now I'm getting them from Dad's land and carrying them in the car, much to DH's displeasure. I just love rocks so much and I like a natural look in my garden. It's not professional or perfect since the rocks I dig up are round and not great for stacking and I don't use cement, I just stack them. As you can see, they come in all colors, shapes & sizes. Jean...that is a heartbreaking story about your clematis. Goodness, your mother sounds a little like mom (before she got the Alzheimers). Why is it mothers think they own OUR things too? Debra...they can be finicky here too. Sometimes one part of the vines will just turn limp and die, for no apparent reason. They seem to like my climate and I've always had good luck with them other than the wilting once in awhile. Val...thank you. Seems like my 'unknown' blue one is the winner today. Julia...I have never had these clematis bloom this early. What a weird year it has been so far. I even have roses blooming already that don't start until the 3rd week in June most years. I have quite a lot more clematis that are quite a way from blooming so I look foward to them hopefully bloom when they normally do. Rena...so glad you enjoyed them. I have some other pretties to share and will post them tomorrow. Christine...LOL. What I love about this forum is that we are all from different zones across the country so we all get to enjoy more than just one spring and summer. Nat....that bloom is what I refer to as a 'cheat' bloom. It was bought potted up through the mail so it came from a greenhouse. I also have some daylilies starting to bloom or sending up scapes that came from Maryott last fall so they're confused, thinking they're still in California. Celeste

I bought these patiohit roses at Ingles... for .99c, I'm such a sucker for a bargain. I wait for them to drop their buds and start to look ragged and then the florist at Ingles clearances them out to .99c! There's five own root roses in each pot so I just can't resist. Put them in some nutritious dirt, larger pot and some sun and they take off. I have another that is 'deep pink'... almost muave, sort of reminds me of Twilight Skies but with more yellow tones. I did similar with the Valentines Day (real florist) roses. I waited until after VD day and bought several dozen of different colors for $6 and rooted them... they didn't come with names much less a patent. I have the large standard red (baccara?), a white (I seem to remember this one was fragrant), a very nice tangerine similar in color to that poulsen tangerine rose, and this yellow. Some of them I have a couple of... I need to tag them while they are blooming. Obviously grown outside and under my unskillful hand (not a exhibition rose pruner) they do not produce florist buds. I'll have to check again for sure but I think this yellow has a slight fragrance.

Pris Yes!!!! LOL if they managed to get pollinated the base swells up and they look like Flamingos choked on golf balls! ROTFLMBO I thought I was the only one!

I'm guessing that's a palm tree they are climbing on. Do you have to attach them or do they attach themselves? Kinda like ivy would?

I accidentally stumbled across a website yesterday that explained how to start Mountain Laurel from seed. I've been trying to do that since we built the house next to three ML's years ago. So, I'm in the middle of seeing if I can follow instructions and get some to germinate this time.

It's a shame your cacti only blooms at night. Not nearly enough time to enjoy them.

Very interesting. I think both plants are in same family. I have the ones with the flat stems but some will get 3 or 4 sided. They bloom white, dark red, orange, coral, & light pink. Epiphyllum is what they are called & those bloom during the day, altho I think GF said her white one blooms at night & smells great. Mine doesn't have any smell that I can tell! The colored ones close up at night. Jan

I wonder if anyone riding by your house thought there were a bunch of pink flamingos' nesting in your tree? Sleeping in the daytime...That is what it looks like to me. LOL I think that is the most gorgeous picture at night, and I can't help but laugh my head off at your flamingos during the day...that is a hoot!! Reminds me of the of the ugly ducklings turning into the beautiful swans story...(;-)

If only they would go from sleeping flamingos to beautiful blooms again! Blooms only one night So fleeting a time for such beauty.
Sleeping Flamingos tuck their heads under their wings with their neck wound around and stand on one leg. Crazy birds make it look easy too! LOL

My mom had one like (or very similar to) your second variety with the flat leaves, when I was a child. I think she got it from my great grandmother. Mom had it for years & years before it ever bloomed. And OMG how excited she was. All the neighbors had to come over to look & oogle. It bloomed several times & quite prolifically after that first time when there were only 1 or 2 blossoms. I remember the fragrance was quite heavy and it had such a beautiful flower.

The plant itself was rather ugly, large & unwieldy, having to be moved out/indoors with the changing seasons. None of us children was interested in taking it when my mom moved out of the house after dad died. So it was tossed.

Your picture brought back good memories of my childhood. Thanks!

beeohio, I'm glad the pics brought you good memories.

pris they attach to the tree (and it is a cabbage palm) with these little root looking things all by themselves DH does guide the ones turned away from the tree back toward it and they attach on their own. The plant isn't a parasite it grows from roots in the ground and hasn't harmed the trees any in all the years I've seen them growing.
