My husband and I have season tickets to our local playhouse. We get 2 tickets for every show of the season for a slightly less than full price because we paid for everything up front. Well, one of the shows had to be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances, and we did not get to see the show. The theater explained why the show had been canceled, but it did not mention anything about refunds. This is a small theater that can't afford to lose money, so I hate to ask for our money back on those productions. Would it be tacky to ask the theater to give us a tax donation slip for the amount we paid but were not able to use? We see three options:1. don't say anything to the playhouse, 2. ask the playhouse about the unused tickets and see what they offer, 3. ask about the unused tickets and if they can call the money a tax donation and give us a donation slip.

The Kennedy Center in D.C. does the tax-deduction offer -- probably for a cancellation situation but also if someone just can't make it to a performance for some reason, the latter situation being quite accommodating! So I don't think it'd be tacky at all just to ask. Maybe your playhouse isn't as large as the Kennedy Center, but it has been paid -- they have your money, and offering a tax deduction slip doesn't cost them anything in the long run. (Because your playhouse is small, I'd feel really awkward asking them for substitute tickets for something else or cash back.)

If your cost of the cancelled show is under $250, you don't need an acknowledgement from the charity.

Proof of payment for the total, and perhaps a copy of the revised schedule or notice of cancellation to show how the donation percentage was determined is enough.

I always like the bad news first - the crepe myrtle is too close to the house and should be moved while it still can be. The boxwood will eventually outgrow it's little space, but that can take a hard pruning to keep it for a few years. The fallen leaves are okay. The silvery plants are Dusty Miller - and I think the snaps, plumbago, alyssum, and dianthus are fine. A nice change from the tortured into submission evergreens in some yards. Snaps will wilt when they need water; but they'll put out more bloom spikes if you pinch off the spent ones. Your conditions in zone 8 are much different than mine in zone 4 - we rarely get prolonged heat enough to bake a garden like you probably do in Houston. I wouldn't plant anything directly over the buried downspout extension - too easy to forget it's there and slice through it with a shovel or something. Some more snaps underneath the arrow, some more allysum on the up side of the dianthus and you're all set.

I made all nine in two days. Maybe I do something different. I stack and glue the pieces all at once. I don't have the patience to wait for each piece to set...the tall thin one is my favorite. I found Candle sticks and the mini vases on top at one yard sale Saturday Morning and had it put together as soon as I got home. If you want to see them close up click on the picture and I have singles of each close up in the album on Picasa. I must confess the red birdbath is simple clear glass that I have painted with glass paint. I wanted to try my hand at revers painting on glass. I am please with the results. I may have to make another painted one I have lots of clear glass but color sure makes a statement. When I started I was only gonna make one or two, Because I had no interuptions I just kept going! I wanted One of each color of the rainbow! LOL They will all be displayed in one Bed, held in with sand then Mulch. I also found Brand New White vinyl edgeing to use but I want to paint it first or at least wash it with some color. I am worried about Hurricane season. LOL Here are some pics of the bird bath. I just wanted to report my results of my experiment. I did containers for the front of my house with carpet of snow alyssum and white cosmos. Only the alyssum germinated. I put all my Cosmo seeds in these containers so it looks like I am going to have to buy white cosmos this year. I did containers for my back patio with petite yellow marigold, cosmic orange cosmos, and royal carpet alyssum. Again only the alyssum germinated. The same marigold seeds that I sowed in separate cups germinated just fine. So I will transplant some of the marigolds into these patio containers. I've never seen the orange cosmos at the nursery, so I will have to look for something tall and yellow/orange to add to the containers. On the bright side - I will not have to buy alyssum.

I'd definitely use compost instead of peat moss. Peat moss doesn't have any nutrients - it's more for moisture retention and adds some acidity to the soil, if you need it. Make sure you need it or you could change your soil pH too much. Also, peat is a non-renewable resource. If you need something for moisture retention good compost will work wonders. I can't speak to the lasagna method because I don't do it. We don't get enough rain to break the materials down fast enough. But I do make lots of homemade compost. Everything gets a top dressing of it every spring and fall. If you are buying it, be sure it's not mostly wood product but has a high content of composted manure. Or you could use plain manure mixed into your topsoil (not fresh if you plan on planting right away). Roses love it! HTH! Diana

I think that if they cancelled it, they need to give you a refund. If you couldn't go, then the tax deduction. If you are OK with the tax deduction, take it. I would want either a refund or another show added to the schedule. That's a lot of money to just let go.

PS- Maybe if they aren't going to add another show, they can give you 2 additional tickets to one that you are attending and you can either sell them or bring friends.

Thank you all for your thoughts. We're fine making a donation of the amount, which is about $40, but I would like the tax slip. I'll ask for one when we reserve for the next show.

They'll probably do as you ask since that's better and easier than dealing with a complaint or refund, but larger charities often won't give a slip for under $250 (since it's not required).
