take it back. You don't have to be stuck with it. Most groceries want you to be happy with whatever you buy and if you don't like it, take it back. They usually will replace it or give you your money back.

I work at a grocery and that is what we do all the time.

I agree, anytime we get anything that's not satisfactory, we return it. Money is too precious, and too hard to come by to toss in the trash these days.

I agree take it back and get your money back. If you bought several that adds up quickly to several dollars. Money that could be used for a nice Brie.

I bought some Cabot cheese the other day...actually 2 packages...we like cabot...got home and my DH is having some sliced with some apple ale and he said what next and I said what do you mean and he said flavored with artificial horseradish......now what the heck is artificial horseradish flavor...the reason I bought it is he likes horseradish and we like Cabot cheese...I guess I have to be more careful in reading labels even with cheese..

And I shudder when we use that fake cheese stuff for the kids at my school! Oh, carp, better not think about it...I do have a job.

I think if you look closely the package I'll bet doesn't say "cheese" anywhere on it. The designations for different types of "processed cheese" are regulated by the FDA. If something says "Processed American Cheese", that means something specific about how much cheese is in the product. If it says "Pasteurized Processed Cheese Product", that means something something a little further removed from actual cheese, If it says Pasteurized Processed Cheese Food, it means even farther from cheese, but it still requires some amount of dairy-derived ingredients.

However when they avoid using the word "cheese" (or if they intentionally misspell it cheeze) it generally means it has close to zero dairy contents, and any resemblance to actual cheese, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

The closest thing to a dairy product in that ingredient list you posted is milk protein concentrate, which has "never been approved as a food ingredient by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration." Note though that this is an older (2009) article. Also note that I might have the specific names of the different regulated cheese-type products wrong.

Much of what people think of and buy as "cheese" isn't in fact real cheese. Most of what you find in stores is hideous stuff formulated by scientists in laboratories rather than by cheesemakers with traditional equipment and ingredients. You need to check labels - I find cheese from abroad (mostly European) at places like Trader Joe's is often the good old stuff at a reasonable price.

One of my sons is a cheese connoisseur and it always bringing gifts of several kinds of cheese which he explains and they are delicious.
American cheese has its place, though.
Imitation cheese food? Nope. Not for anything. My total bad for not reading the label and getting taken in by the fact that it looks like Borden's. American.

I don't know how folks can eat fake cheese things like Cheese Whiz or that stuff they use for fondue.

Moni, the cafeteria staff at the school where I teach, they complain about the "food" they have to serve to the kids. The older teachers talk about the days when they were allowed to make fresh cinnamon rolls for the kids and staff. I remember liking school lunches because they were homemade and good.

speaking of velveeta, it was just recalled from most Walmarts! I didn't hear why, but what could possibly be in there that is any worse than what's supposed to be in it?

Your comment made me curious, juellie, so I googled it. What a joke, I don't believe real cheese has any (of this "key ingredient") at all.

If you buy Borden's American slices, that's not real cheese either because of added ingredients. It's cheese product, or cheese food, or something else.

Try English cheddar, you may like it. It has a better taste than its American counterparts. Funny enough, it's usually white, the orange color you find in American products is simply food coloring.

I'm a pretty good label reader and often return products to the shelf if I don't like what I see. I eat a lot of peanut butter, but many if not most have sugar and other ingredients besides peanuts.

after years of kraft cheese slices, (and oh boy short on $$, for 6) we've finally gown up to Costco's Colby/cheddar slices (over in the "real cheese" counter) for we empty nesters...

they also have a lovely ny state sliced cheddar but less shelf life than the Colby jack...

I try to read labels most of the time, especially with the products at Walmart. Their brand of Spaghetti sauce has NO tomato products (dried package to mix with sauce) but uses beet juice to color it.

Sounds awful! Hopefully you've discontinued feeding it to the dogs now that you know what's in it. I wouldn't have bought "several packages" of it until I'd tried it once and decided whether I'd get more or not.
