Do TV quiz shows 'augment' their audiences?

DH and I disagree on this. When the camera very quickly pans an audience during "Wheel of Fortune", I believe only about the first twenty rows of seats contain live people. He thinks there is a full auditorium. I can't find an answer using Google.

(Isn't it pathetic? We have started turning off 'The News' after 30 minutes.)

Per the Wheel of Fortune ticket request site, it says, "Our studio audience only has room for 160 cheering fans..."

I would think that studio audience tickets are extremely popular.

Hi Patti. I love the idea and concept behind your show. I realize this was just a "pilot" attempt, and perhaps you wanted to show a range of some of the things the show would like to cover, but I felt it was way too light on substance. Now, if you were to do one show with just two subjects, and maybe a third, small segment on something quick - tips, viewer ideas, etc., that would be a lot more interesting and informative. Again, I'm guessing that here you wanted to show a range of subjects and that when/if you do a true episode, it would indeed be more substantial. I would also love to see more of your background - I found myself wanting to see your house, your yard, your neighborhood - since it deals with sustainable urban agriculture, I wanted to see your surroundings to get a feel for exactly what situation you were in, and to be able to adapt that to mine. Again, this is something that perhaps you are planning on doing in any future shows. I thought you had a very good on-screen presence, good speaking, good voice projection and liveliness - you seem quite comfortable in front of a camera. Best of luck to you. Interesting thread. We cancelled cable a year and half ago now because there was "nothing on". We now receive a total of 4/sometimes 5 channels and our viewing has dropped remarkably. I can't remember the last time I watched "Victory Garden"! There were a couple of shows I used to get a kick out of but it was so long ago now I barely remember them. One was with a woman named Karen Stro-something, I think she was a painter, too. And then was one with Barbara Damrocsh and Elliot Someone (they're well known as garden writers and I've butchered her name and spaced his right out). I've never seen People, Places, and Plants, but like the magazine. I'm with most you, though... too much yakety-yak, fluff, and the same old material, not enough "smart stuff"... like botany, design theory, unusual combinations of "choicer" plant material. I've felt the same about home dec. shows for years, too!

I'm not quite sure what you are actually supposed to observe when watching the shows. You will be mostly watching a host perform their craft. I would suspect that the thrust of your interest would be more in the capacity of a guest appearance. Most guests come off as quite overwhelmed and so image conscious that they present a poor image. Typically the guest will be dressed nicely and stand there with the best pasted on smile they can muster and stand there with the best pasted on smile they can muster and stand there... When guests finally do speak they too often only reply to the host's specific query in short, choppy bursts of data as if answering a test question. On the other hand, you occasionally see guests that have experience in television. Rather than smiling in awe at host, they are politely waiting to assume control of their brief time allotment. Quite frankly, they make it easy for the host. Rather than choppy, direct answers to questions, they see the question as their cue to take control of that time slot and tell their story. It is really much like developing good writing. For the most part, you are going to look the way you look. There isn't too much any of us can do about our physical appearance anyway. I've been to The View 3 times, Rachel Ray twice, Regis and Kelly twice and Letterman once. When DD was attending college in NYC she went to John Stewart, How to be a Millionaire, Conan and Letterman. If you go to Letterman take a sweater because he keeps the studio notoriously cold. My question was easy 'What college did Dave attend?' answer - Ball State in Indiana. When they send you tickets some of the shows will state in the letter that it isn't a 100% guarantee that you'll be admitted. The letter will tell you what time you should arrive and then you still stand in line outside the theater until they'll ready to take you in. We always arrived well before the stated time because if they have last minute VIP guests then the people at the end of the line get bumped. Some of the shows tape 2 shows on the same day. The View did this regularly, usually on Thursday because Fridays shows were always taped. Most of the shows allowed us to request up to 4 tickets. I used to get last minute e mail invitations for The View fairly regularly. They had a separate section on their request form for residents of NY, NJ and CT. It seems like they would send these invites to people who lived nearby and who could easily fill in empty seats in the audience on short notice. It's probably been almost 2 years since I've gone to a show.

Well, I don't know about Wheel Of Fortune, but I was on The Price is Right, (with Bob Barker) and every seat is filled with real people. In fact, it's an early morning, long wait, with staff corralling us into a winding line up process that takes a few hours, just to be cleared to enter inside for the studio audience. But it was my mother's dream to get on the show and she was thrilled to see the people beside us and in front of us get called 'on down.'

I've been in the audience for several TV shows - The View, Rachel Ray, Live with Regis and Kelly, and David Letterman. Letterman's studio is fairly large with a balcony but the others aren't all that large.

However when you watch the shows on TV the audiences appear much larger. I think it's all careful camera angles.

Was on the Tonight Show and Ellen. Both seemed smaller than I had expected, but not what you would call small....if that makes any sense,

oops...neither are quiz shows...sorry.

A few years ago I was in the audience for a taping of Wheel of Fortune. The room was smaller than I expected and all seats were filled to capacity. Had a great time!

duluthinbloom -- Ah-hah! Thanks. I was pretty sure the 'audience' behind the first several rows was 'painted in'. I know movies can 'generate' crowds, but I don't know how it's done for TV. I should have just recorded a show and then paused the playback. (I should have taken DH's bet, too!)

and I go back even further than that that...50's 60's...now like a show called queen for a day was packed...and early am show in la not so much, but lol, the studio was right across the street and they let me in, lol....and steve allen show it was an old movie theater....and was on the laugh track for a couple of half hour shows..those you were prompted on.... tickets were given out at other events...I love lucy did have a live audience...the studio wasn't far from my elementary school and walked over one day....the door was actually open so could see in...

susanjf, Desilu was at the corner of Gower and Melrose. I think those sound stages are part of Paramount now.

Did you live nearby? I did too. Which elementary school?

Ditto to what Matti wrote about "Wheel." It's doesn't have a huge audience, like "Price is Right," but there was no production trick like adding bodies in by computer.
(One other thing: The wheel looks really big on TV, but it's a lot smaller in person -- that might be a combo of lighting, camera angles, etc.)

I've been to a few filmings and everything looks so small in person and big on TV. I went to SNL a year and a half ago and there are only 3 little stages for all the skits. I was astounded!
