| DH and I will be flying up to Manchester, NH with the first stop to visit a friend. We will arrive on a Thursday, Oct. 4th and will spend a day or so with them. Thinking about going into Portsmouth to see the historical sites there.
From there we will rent a car and head up to Maine. We want to see Acadia Park and need some other ideas of what to see along the way and ideas on maybe where to stay. We have lodged in state parks before, both primitive and upscale. But we are open to other hotels, etc. Not much on B&B's as our experiences have been mixed. We will need to leave on the 10th so depending on whether we fly out of Manchester or somewhere in Maine, we will probably not do much site seeing on the 9th. Any ideas on what to do? I am hoping for fall leaves but I realize we may be early.

I hope you get some good suggestions from people who really know. I have not been to Maine in years, but I loved Ogunquit, Old Orchard Beach. I also went to Campobello, place. I think you actually cross in and out of Canada to reach it.

Kennebuncport, Oqunquit and Portland are all worth stopping for a visit. Portland is a cool city with a nice waterfront and good restaurants. The original LL Bean store is in Freeport, just north of Portland and is fun to visit Bowdoin College in Brunswick ME has a nice museum and a pretty campus. I think you should try to book some places to stay whether motels or B&B's. You are definitely getting in to foliage season and it can get very crowded.

If you like museums, Portland has a great one and wonderful shops, food etc. It's worth spending a day there but it's more city like. I agree Ogunquit is gorgeous, Perkins cove in particular and then you can drive up the coast to Acadia. Lots to see there.

You are picking the right time. In my opinion, the fall colors in New Hampshire are better than Vermont (if that is possible). Both Vermont and new Hampshire are tops for fall colors. The arriveal of fall colors affect motel occupancy, so it might be prudent to reserve ahead for your first week. After that, you can get the "lay of the land" and make reservations as you go. New Hampshire has its share of covered bridges. Plan to photograph a few of these. There are so many lovely places to see that I can't make any recommendation of one over the other. Much depends on personal preferences. The southeastern coast of Maine is filled with many long inlets that fill with sea water when the tide comes in. The small seaport towns are located at the tips of the spikes of land. The result is you can not easily travel from one sea coast town to the another even though these may be only a few miles apart as the crow flies. To get from one of these towns to the next, one has to travel inland for several miles to a road that run lateral with the coast and then drive down the next spur to the next town. You may have to travel 20 miloes overland to get to another town that is only 3 miles away by straight line. There is a pair of 'sister' towns on the Maine-New Brunswick border that have shared services; They operate as one town. They share police, fire, schools, and utilities. Each day, several hundred residents cross the border. They carry a special ID card to speed things up. I don't know how they handle this after the tightening of homeland security. Beware that if you cross into New Brunswick, you are in The weather is highly variable. It can be 3 days of cold rain with light fog to crisp, clear, cool days. Plan to dress in layers. The day time temperature can range from 40 to 75 F. Its a great trip. Enjoy!
