So I could spend summers elsewhere (where it's not as hot as you-know-where) and avoid SAD.

SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) usually occurs in the winter months. Are you in the Southern Hemisphere?

Some folks live their lives in a constant struggle for power and control. When they don't get what they want they have a temper tantrum... poor Suzanne. Power seems to elude her... so does the respect of her Graduates. It's sad for everyone around her. And for her as well. "When you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail." This reminds me of a story that was passed around a few years ago. Snopes lists it as partly true, a few things are a bit off... but it is based on fact. The Sneeze More than one way to have a benediction at at college graduation ... They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing .... and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt. Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears. This class would NOT pray during the commencements----not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it. The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families. The speeches were nice, but they were routine ... until the final speech received a standing ovation. A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened. All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly sneezed! The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said, "God bless youÂeach and every one of you!Â And he walked off stageÂ The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke GodÂs blessing on their future with or without the courtÂs approval. (This is a true story; it happened at the University of Maryland)

Thanks so much, everyone. Sorry I didn't get to answer before. I wish I had more time to get on here. Summer is hectic with the Monarchs, the garden, the lawn, and any other project that I want to do and not be outside freezing while I'm doing it. The information all of you gave was very helpful. I did run into a problem and that is that somehow half of my cats disappeared. 7 out of 12 are among the missing and I don't think they're coming back because they've been missing for I don't know how many days now. Maybe I should have kept them separated. Do the big ones eat the little ones? I never had problems with that with the Monarchs. So now I'm down to 5. I hope I get eggs here yet, but it is getting kind of late. I did find an egg on my parsley and one of my rue. I just can't imagine getting dozens of eggs like others on here do. This female BST flies around like she's on a mission, looking for something, and I assume it's a place to lay eggs. She goes near the plants sometimes but doesn't land. Other time she lands but doesn't do anything. I don't know what her problem is, and I don't know why she waited until now to start laying eggs. Isn't it late for them to be laying in PA. Gosh, we'll get our first frost in another month. Oh, these will probably overwinter. I forgot. lol So I imagine they can lay awhile yet, right? How big do that cats get before they pupate? These two biggest ones I have are wandering around so much but don't seem to be getting anything done. I don't know if they're just out taking a stroll or what. I have them in a big plastic storage container (about 18" x 24") and put in bamboo sticks in case they want to pupate on those. Cathy

That's going to get real expensive, really fast. My nephew is special needs. Here's what my SIL does. A gift card to the classroom teacher, usually to someplace the teacher can get classroom supplies. For everyone else, the one-on-one aide, the home nurses, the bus diver and aide, the therapists--she has my nephew make a card or a pencil holder or cookies or something else as gifts. My nephew's in fifth grade now and has a teacher, a teacher's aide, his own one-on-one aide, the bus driver, the bus aide, five different home nurses, physical therapists--home and school, occupational therapists--home and school, speech therapist, music therapist, two swim therapists (I don't know what they are really called, but they've worked some miracle and he can now swim unassisted), 11 doctors, the brace maker, the wheelchair guy, the mobility specialist and probably a few other people I'm forgetting. In your case, I'd give $25 gift cards to the teacher and the therapists. Then I'd give some sort of gift basket to the classroom--the teacher and the aides--something that they can easily split up amongst them. Cards for everyone else, handmade if your son can do that, or at least signed by him however he signs his name at this time. If you don't feel the card is enough, you can include a little thank you note of your own, thanking them for all the progress your son has made under their care. If you haven't had contact with someone, there's no need to give them anything at the holidays. I'm sure they won't be expecting it. (The nurse, the liaison.) If you are going to store school supplies, do you only need temperature control for the times you may be working in there? If so, you wouldn't seem to need the same type of climate control you have in your house. First thing would be to evaluate the need for insulation. If your climate isn't harsh and you aren't in there for long periods, anything from a space heater and a portable AC unit or a Dyson heating/cooling fan might serve your purposes. I would compare that with the room heating/cooling units I've seen advertised. I don't really know much about them, but Mitsubishi is one of the makers and looking at what they have might be a starting point for comparing options. The rest is just deciding how finished you wan the space to be and how you want to organize your materials. Take inventory of what you need the room to do for you -- purposes you must have and what you might like to have; the things you need to store and what you might have in the future, as well as what will keep it all organized and easy to access. It sounds like a combination of bookshelves and deeper shelves for bins might be needed. A table in the middle of the room for working with bins might bee helpful. If you might use the space for more than just storage and a table for sorting, packing and unpacking bins, I'd look at home office and craft rooms for ideas on what would work in your room and serve your needs. I get SAD in the summer heat and humidity, too. I feel as trapped in the house in the heat as I do during the cold of winter. It's not truly SAD, which caused by shorter days and lack of natural light in the winter, but it still makes me feel sad at times!

I'd be an awful teacher. Retirement was the solution for me!

Less often, seasonal affective disorder causes depression in the spring or early summer."

So, yes, it is truly SAD.

The kind that occurs in the winter sounds psychological. The kind that occurs in the summer, at least for me, is physical. Once the physical discomforts wring the stuffing out of you, then I guess it gets some psychological components.

The heat and humidity totally sap my energy and it makes me feel moody. I don't feel trapped in the house. I just dread and try to avoid having to step out into what feels like an oven. Then immediately being drenched in sweat makes me irritable. Carrying a handkerchief to wipe sweat off my face makes me irritable. Having to shower twice a day makes me irritable. Being severely heat intolerant is miserable.

I'm with you ÃÂ©clair, I actually feel depressed, and mad when I'm so hot and overheated. And I get nauseated. I avoid going outdoors as much as humanly possible in summer.

I honestly think I'm allergic to the sun. It absolutely drains the life out of me. I get sooo tired and lethargic and I can't shake it. I hate summer weather.

From what I've always understood, SAD in the Winter is caused by lack of natural light which, like leaves on trees & plants, is necessary to process energy.

It would be nice to travel and avoid the heat.
I worked in a school system for a lot of my adult life (as a nurse, not as a teacher). I could see that being a teacher is hard, hard work. If you didn't love it, you would be in misery for the 9 months you didn't get to travel.

I hibernate in the summer...can't stand the humidity which just drains all the energy out of me.

When you "hibernate" in summer it's called "estivate"- the roots of the word "hibernate" mean "winter".

It's been only in the mid 70s here in Wisconsin but the humidity is super high and it's very uncomfortable. I often wondered how people down South could stand it, and I thought you just got used to it and carried on your lives. I guess not. It was very uncomfortable walking yesterday with the high humidity and I can see how being out with that humidity and 20 degrees hotter would be unlivable. At least in the winter around here we can pile on the clothes and still enjoy the outdoors. I have SAD in the winter.

don't have the ac in yet(window unit lr), but know we'll probably hole up in the master bedroom later...it's the humidity that's the worst...and my anti-hormone pills can cause a mini hot flash....yuck...

I always envied teachers with their summers off. I had a job with two weeks vacation each year. Yet every year I ended up on leave without pay because I took my 2 weeks in Summer and also took days off when my kids were little and I had no one who would baby-sit. One granny was a grinchy type, told me when I was pregnant not to expect help from her. The other was 500 miles away.Now there's Family Medical Leave available. Coulda used it!

Well then, get going, OJ! I guess you have a much shorter growing season than down here; having said that, I just planted beans and cucs a couple of days ago. :)

Seriously, I do hope you never push yourself too hard. I think easing up on the gardening is just as difficult for some older people (is that you?) as giving up driving.
