I would say it is Ostrya virginiana (Eastern hophornbeam) but without seeing the trunk of the tree it is hard for me to distinguish it from Carpinus caroliniana (American hornbeam). The trunk on the Carpinus is usually muscle-y looking (hence it's nickname Musclewood).

I had problems with overheating in the flow through bin. I finally found someone who has been a commercial wormer for 2 generations, he told to stop fluffing and mixing the contents of the bin. He also said do not put the food on top, he said that in nature the worms live on top and move sideways to get the food. In nature you do not get large amounts of food coming down in one big dump. I collect the food scraps in a small bucket, place a layer of shredded paper and cardboard on the bottom, then each day i put a layer of shredded paper/cardboard over that days scraps, at the end of the week I add just enough water to make it all moist but not floating in water. I leave it sit for 3 days to a week (I have 2 collection buckets). I add it to the worm bin by gently pulling the contents of the top half of the worm bin to one side (I do this very slowly and try not to disturb the worms too much) and dumping the contents of the buckets in the vacant area. I it takes about 3 days for the worms to move over and start on the new contents of the worm bin. I have not had heating problems using this method. My worms seem a lot happier now that I have stopped disturbing them all the time to fluff and check on them. I do not disturb or fluff the bottom half of the worm bin at all, it gradually falls through to the bottom section of the worm bin for collection. There is always a few worms in the collection section, I just toss them back in when I go through it. When the bin was overheating they seemed to be escaping down there, they did not move so much when I picked them up, now they are much more active when I catch them, I am assuming that this means that they are healthier.

That's one of my favorite inspiration floor photos! I've been looking for that nice, light/medium color, distressed (but not obviously done by machine), old looking floor just like this and I've received dozens of samples. I've never recommended a floor before. Those in the photo reaaallly look like reclaimed floors to me... but I'll let the flooring experts address that. The ones I like the most and that look the most like this floor are these: Elmwood Reclaimed Lumber: 2 options I've seen: 1) Antique Hickory (reclaimed) - they have unfinished (they are already reclaimed and distressed, but need a "finish" on site) or they can finish for you with a great oil finish (ask for both samples). These are gorgeous floors and if you do a mixed width it is more affordable. Personally I really prefer the wider planks. They offer them up to 9", but it does cost more. Oh, and they have a "country select" hickory that is also nice, but less like the floor above. 2) Antique Heart Pine Rustic - reclaimed. I know, I know. It's pine. The Rustic oil finish brings it to this color approximately. But I think the price is better on the pine even though its heart pine and also reclaimed. The color is alot less orange (and more like the photo above) than any other heart pine I've seen. It's beautiful in person! I love my sample floors so much I've been carrying them all over the house with me while I'm working on the plans. ;) Might be worth looking at their samples? I prefer Elmwood even over Carlisle... and their floors are fabulous too. Elmwood and Carlisle will have much longer (in addition to wider) planks than those engineered planks, which gives a more authentic look imo. If you send this pic to them I bet they can match it.

Ya know lucky, (I'm sure you do know!) HL is a fast grower, and as such, probably not all that dense of wood, although I have been surprised on occasion at the tightness of the grain on big old bottom hunks off of trunks. I always wanted to make a bass guitar body out of it for some reason. Never got around to it and now, I finally quit touring and playing, so doesn't really matter anymore, but interesting properties for such a fast grower. Most any I've ever burned was just thrown on an outdoor fire but one brother-in-law reported the blue flame in his wood burner. I dunno. Considering how over-planted that thing is, IMO, any that gets burned can only help matters, lol! +oM
