Lake Louise has snowfall in June?!!! Wow. Part of the Canadian Rockies. Got it. Looks glorious. And cold.

I don't know that any of that snow fell in June, but it is left over from the winter. Lake Louise is in Banff National Park and is about a 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive from my doorstep in Calgary. Behind it about 20 minutes, is Moraine Lake, which I would have liked to have gone to as well, but the long walk to the end of the lake pooped us out. The weather was perfect, actually. A little windy but it was nice. All the ice you see on the lake was melting. :)

In my opinion, Lake Louise is the most beautiful lake in Canada. One other lake does rival it a bit and that is the one surrounded by Ten Peaks. Its hard to pick; Canada has many beautiful water views: One of my favorties is the Lake of the Woods.

jemdandy, the one that's surrounded by the Ten Peaks is Moraine Lake, about a 20 minute drive from Lake Louise. It's amazingly beautiful and was on the back of our old $10 bills for many years. I don't know Lake of the Woods. Where is it?

My mitake, with poor wording... it's possible for snowfall in June :) That is baffling to this gal who has lived in the South for so long now. Melting? Still there snow/ice?! Baffling. I must have lived a very sheltered life, since I've always said I have lived everywhere and experienced so many climes, but not this one. A very different life there than I have lived. It interests me greatly. Totally cool. Looks like a melting glacier, beautiful blue.

I was there less than two weeks ago and it snowed. We were also shocked to find that Moraine Lake had a solid ice cover so late in the spring, and the short pathway from the parking lot to the edge of the lake had 6 inches of snow and ice. Lake Louise had a solid ice cover too but for a bit of clear surface at the Hotel end where the stream flows out. Heck, the Moraine Lake Lodge, situated right on the lake, doesn't even open until June 1.

Like mountain locations anywhere, you shouldn't go expecting good weather. Debby's photos are lovely and show how stunning the Canadian Rockies are in clear weather. Unfortunately, they're far enough north that the winter season or vestiges of it can last much of the year.

We were at Lake Louise two months ago, and we had to walk down a path that had about 5 feet of snow on either side. It's amazing how much has melted in two months.

In all honesty, it can snow all 12 months of the year here. I've seen snow in July and August. It melts really fast, but it can still come down. Now ask me why I live here......

I had the great pleasure of being there in October, 1973 and couldn't get over how beautiful Banff and particularly Lake Louise was!! The color of the water was breathtaking!!

Lake-of-the-Woods lies at the southwest corner of Ontario. It is a large sprawling body of water filled with many islands and bays. It sits on the north boundary of Minnesota between Rainy River and Kenora. It is a fisherman's paradise and a place for canoe adventure. However, one can get lost in it so one must be prepared. The highway from International Falls and Kenora runs across one end of it affording stunning views. Water flows northward out of it into the Winnepeg flowage at a control dam in Kenora. This water eventually flows through a hydro-generating station at the White Dog dam and on to Lake Winnepeg in Manitoba.

An observation: The islands are rocky with shallow soil. The dominant island tree is spruce with poplar growing in the deeper soils. Spruce do not have tap roots and is happy to allow its roots to spread laterally over the rock to find cracks and gouges. A spruce can grow to good heights, however, on these islands the height of spruce is limited by storm winds. When a tree attains a certain height, it gets toppled by storm winds. Therefore, when is out on the water, one can look in the distance at an island or land and gage the depth of soil by the average height of the spruce; The taller the spruce, the deeper the soil.

I am located a long away from Kenora, but I have fond memories of several summer vacations spent on my parents-in-laws island in the Winnepeg flowage out of Minaki. That is truly a wonderful place, but with hazards. An injury can be problematic unless sufficient plans have been made beforehand. The Canadian Government has done a good job of managing that land trying to balance recreational, logging, Native's Reservation, residential and development. A large parcel is kept pristine where the fish and beaver may play.
