Do your grocery stores have gas rewards?

I haven't seen this anywhere else except Wisconsin, so I'm wondering if this occurs elsewhere. Yesterday I went shopping and earned .88 cents off a gallon of gas up to 15 gallons. I needed gas so I filled up, but the points accumulate for 21 days so you can keep adding them. Had 1.46 a couple weeks ago. The best part of it is the store I shop at puts the reward on items I need anyway that are on sale. For instance, bread was on sale for 1.98 with 5 cents off per gallon. Another store in town puts larger rewards (up to 40 cents a gallon) but the items are priced really high, so I never shop there. Do your grocery stores do this?

They do. I took advantage of it at a store near my job when I was working, and occasionally got some spectacularly discounted fill-ups. Ours went up to 20 gallons. Since I quit work, I tend to get groceries all over the place, and ditto gas.

Yes, our Shop n Save here in Wv does it. Really great to get cheaper gas that way!

It would be difficult (and time-consuming) to add that up, but especially if you buy organic vegetables, you will save money. Last year I purchased two kale plants and at the time I bought them I thought they were sort of expensive, I think they were over a dollar apiece. But they produced enormous amounts of kale for many months, until our weather got really hot in the early summer. I think I could have kept them alive through the summer if I had tried, but I needed the space for other things, and by then the kale leaves were tasting bitter. But for all those months, I noticed that organic kale of the same variety at the farmers market was about $4 a bunch. If I had bought just one bunch each week I guess would have saved between $80 and $100 just on kale. I was eating at least that much of it, and giving more away. Then there was the organic looseleaf lettuce I grew. I paid $2 or $3 for a large packet of mixed seed (still using it this year) and also supplied myself, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Organic lettuce was going for $2 to $3 a head but since I cut my lettuce leaves with scissors and let them regrow from the roots, I used the same plants all fall and winter and spring and saved an awful lot of money for myself and others. Beets were another good example. They are ridiculously easy to grow and a seed packet seems to last a lifetime. Yet organic beets (heck, even non-organic fresh beets) are very expensive at the market. Not every vegetable provides such a drastic cost comparison, of course. Zucchini squash is usually pretty cheap at the store, and of course it produces so much on the vine that you want to pay people to take it off your hands. Some other vegetables can be bought cheaply, although if you buy only organic vegetables most of those will cost twice as much as non-organic and that makes your cost comparison with homegrown a little more meaningful. But as most every gardener points out, the taste of homegrown food is much better, and the knowledge that food you grew yourself is safe for you and your family is priceless. When you factor in pride of accomplishment, convenience at cooking time, and the joy and pleasure of being close to nature, the value of gardening rises exponentially.

For the most part I know the areas to be wary. Paper products are one area. I still use number of sheets for comparison. Especially on the smaller rolls, you need to factor in the weight of the core to use weight as the comparison and that winds up being too complicated for me to mess with. To me, and I think most people, they use a certain length, therefore a certain number of sheets per use. Now there could be a few millimeters variation in the length of the sheet but for the most part I still see the number of sheets as being the best comparison. In reality, I don't use significantly fewer sheets if it's double, triple or whatever ply. It seems to me that in theory anyway, the thicker it is, the heavier it should be and that would throw off a valid comparison of use. I guess short of counting the number of actual uses from a roll it's going to be tough to compare. The brands I buy are thick enough and soft enough. I still like the 1000 sheet Scott for use and value. I don't find anything that comes close. I was at Kmart recently. I used their AF brand before and the paper was (at least then) thinner and lighter than Scott but acceptable when I could get it cheaper than Scott. I've also used Walgreens 1000 sheet which is much like AF. Lately I buy Scott for 50+ per roll. 1000 sheets equates to 5-6 rolls of Cottenelle, Angel Soft, Charmin, Northern and others and obviously is far cheaper. It's really a bargain. I haven't logged it yet but I recorded the number of sheets and price per package on that Kmart trip. I was going to do some comparing so I had harder figures to see how they compare. Personally I don't like the Scott extra soft as well, but after getting a 12 roll pack for about 38Â¢ per roll, I decided to get it anyway for the value. They have something like 700 or 750 sheets per roll IIRC. I used to be a diehard Charmin fan but it doesn't matter anymore. It's not the same as it was 35 years ago. If you're interested I could weigh the Walgreens roll (I think I have a couple left) and the Scott Extra Soft and let you know what it comes in at. Occasionally I use paper plates. Lately I've used them more often for a few reasons. But I will buy the coated plates because often I have to use mroe than one of the cheaper ones and I only use one of the HD ones. And factoring in the small amount I use, I feel justified. Coffee is a good example for me. I've tried other brands but I still prefer Maxwell House. I won't pay $10 for a container of it though. I'll buy it on sale for $5 maximum. Actually I usually buy two and it'll last me until the next good sale. With brands I don't like I have to throw it, suffer through it or give it away. Two out of three aren't frugal, and the other isn't being kind to me. And when it comes down to it, I don't use that much and the cheapest brands aren't much cheaper than what I get it for on sale, and sometimes get a coupon with it so I feel justified. Sometimes it can be tough but other times you just go with a best guess and use products you like, even if it could be a little more. I don't use irrational rationalization to justify using something. I'll pay a penny a gallon more to not drive 10 miles to a cheaper station, especially when I need gas. Occasionally I'll reward myself and buy a nice steak or rack of ribs rather than a more frugal meal. And sometimes I just figure, hey, I'll make it up on something else. Few people I know live as frugally as me, though I'm not as radical about it as some. Some things I can't do, some I can, for many reasons. Happy frugalling everyone!

I was going to suggest calling now, then taking the goods back later, not about to spend half the value in gas to make the special trip, apart from the time. ... and see that was what you did. I thought at Snidely's suggestion was that some folks who don't think well of themselves may lack the push, or self-confidence, to stare down a store person and tell them of their inadequate produce. That if such applied to some of the people here, that it'd be a good idea to get a bit more backbone, to stand up for one's self when getting a bad deal, rather than just taking it and saying nothing (but feeling grumpy inside) ... in that case, maybe grumpy should be shared? If it doesn't apply to you ... do as Dad used to suggest: let it roll off, like water from a duck's back ... a sign of feeling comfortable in one's own skin, perhaps? ole joyful

Stores used to have various markdown areas but not much anymore with the exception of discontinued items which they'll usually put in a cart or on a bossy and place somewhere in the store. Often near the departments the discontinued items were in. Refundable items go to r-claim if it's a guaranteed sale item but that won't include any fresh foods. Mostly it's H&B items. I used to buy a lot of things like sausage when they had it "use today or freeze" and the price was next to nothing. Occasionally I'll see some marked down meats but not much. I was looking at some bacon the one day and the prices varied so much. It was dependent on the expiration date. Then I noticed a lot of it was moldy. I told the butcher meat department worker and he got all defensive and started sputtering "it's the fluorescent lights that do that!". Uh, don't you think you should pull it off the shelf buddy? I quit buying meat at that store after that. Some of the older chicken goes to the deli for the deli chicken and I suspect a lot of the meat that gets old could well be put in the grinder for hamburger. Not sure about that but it would make sense. Funny you should mention produce. I was at Target yesterday and they were putting out peppers, well trying to. The guy was looking at them and probably 4 out of 5 got tossed into a garbage box. I suppose it goes to the trash. I didn't look close but from a distance they didn't look that bad but I think since grocery is new in these stores they want to keep quality up there. Lastly, there is a Cub Food in Forest Lake where every morning a guy comes in with a station wagon and picks up (apparently) all of the old bread and bakery products. I was told he's a local pig farmer and feeds it to the pigs.

Stop and Shop in New York. They are now offering an alternative for those who don't have a car. After 300 points you get five percent off groceries, but you have to go up to the desk before shopping to get some kind of coupon.
I think I could get back an extra dollar but then I would be paying regular price for gas, so I decided to stick with using it for gas rewards.
My husband will sometimes take the cars to Costco but it is a drive and only makes sense if he is going down to the city and can jump off and get gas. Costco is usually the cheapest, but just not convenient for us.

Winn Dixie in Alabama does. And it is my regular grocery store. If we don't have any points via Winn Dixie we fill up at Sam's Club,

Our grocery stores give stamps that can be use for food, or gas or we can donate them to our cancer center for those needing gas/food

Safeway in Northern CA. Some stores have their own stations and there are other gas stations that also honor the points.

Our Krogers store does that here in Georgia. I wish they would let us use those points either for $ off groceries or for donations.

Giant Eagle here in Ohio gives you 10 cents off per gallon for every $50.00 you spend. I buy all my gift cards there for restaurants and stores we go to. They seem expensive to me, and I usually go to some of the smaller loa ally owned prices for better produce & meat, but it doesn't take long for me to get over a $1 off 30 gallons. If I run my Expedition almost empty and take a couple of empty gas cans I can get all 30 gallons! It really pays off that way. And you can save the points up. They only expire every 90 days.

Gasoline isn't a major budget item for us. (Nine year old car with 27K miles on it.) Since a Costco opened a store ten minutes from us, we buy gas when we shop there.

Kroger down here in Houston does have gas rewards, which I just redeemed about 30 minutes ago...saved .$0.03 per gallon.

One of our grocery store chains here does - Sobey's. They give you a cent off per litre if you spend a certain amount and you can save them up and use them all at once at Irving gas stations. Or you don't have to save them up, just use them as you get them.

Here in SW. Pa., we have Shop n Save and Giant Eagle that have the rewards along with double coupons....Giant Eagle is very expensive and I have a feeling they jack up their prices to cover the rewards but they're parking lot is always full...
Different times of the year, they will also give double points for gift cards and it's really a savings...I usually make a killing at Christmas time and get all my gift cards at Shop n Save...And then along with the gift card, I usually give my son the rewards (which amounts to free gas) as another gift...With his truck, 30 gallons of gas is a pretty good gift....

Yes we use Kroger and get great discounts on gas there plus it's the closest store to home. I also get really good coupons in the mail from Kroger based on the products we buy, so I can always depend on using them. The ones that print out at checkout are usually not things we buy. But printed on the receipt itself are coupons to restaurants and other places in the area, we have used those.

Hy-Vee in Missouri does. In fact, I just got home from Hy-Vee. When I checked out, the checker said, handing me my rewards card back, "You earned 1 penny off each gallon today!" I spent about $77 on my groceries.

Well, I guess it's better than a kick in the teeth.

our local Kroger just installed one...but we shop at Costco and they did, too...or sam's club....my dh's boss has some sort of deal with a marathon station....maybe they offer discounts?

Hy-Vee does. One time recently I got .75 cents per gallon discount. I shop that store regularly and if I pay cash for my gas, I get an additional 5 cents per gallon discount.

Yes, Smiths, a Kroger store does this. I get 50 points on each script refill. I get double points on all purchases. Sometimes 4 times points. I work there, so I buy something everyday it seems. So far, the last 6 months, I have earned 1000 points a month, that is 1.00 off a gallon of gas, up to 35 gallons, so DH and I take both our cars and some gas cans and fill up. I only use a tank of gas a month unless I go out of town for something. So it really helps.

Krogers & Safeway do it here. If you spend $100 in a month you save $.10cents off a gallon of gas, once. Otherwise you save .03 cents off a gallon by using the grocery store card. It's not much if only spend about $150 on groceries a month like we usually do.

CW-I take the gas cans too! My car is only 11 gallons, but we use the gas for mowing and the boat so why waste the money? Glad I'm not the only one.

Yes, Kroger here does. You can get up to 30 cents per gallon off depending on how much you spend in the store.
