I have read several translations of this, most concur that The Architect's Garden is appropriate. The Alhambra and the adjoining Generalife were the summer palace and country estate of the Narid Kings, beside the city of Granada. Andalusia is autonomous region is southern Spain.

These well-tended gardens fell into disarray due to negligence, however work was begun in 1931 to bring it back. The work continued until 1951, when it was re-opened to the public.

What I find striking in this photo is the stone work on the path.

You can see the Moorish influence in the design. Although these are officially gardens, there are several pavilions on the site.

This is the Patio de la Acequia. Fountains are water features are all over the Generalife and Alhambra. This was very impressive.

I asked about agriculture in the southeast part of Spain and was told the Almond and Olive trees were the primary fruit trees. Our guide, Debbie, told us that Spain grows more olives than Italy; and that most of the olives are exported to Italy for the making of olive oil. I could not figure out what they didn't just make the olive oil in Spain and push Italy out of the picture. Grapes are also a big crop, but most of the grape growing region is farther north. As we rode along we saw many hectares of farmland such as this completely used for Olive and Almond trees.

Valencia is the busiest port on the Mediterranean with contain shipping. For many years, shipping was the biggest revenue maker in the city; however, since the 1990s, tourism has moved into a spot to generate as many Euros. In almost every port we were at in Spain, the topic of unemployment was brought up. Comments were never positive. Most of the college graduates were moving to Germany due to their better position for employment. That leaves those with less education and a higher unemployment rate.

There is a school on the grounds. The students stay in dormitories there. The boys' choir is one of the big draws for visitors. They perform Monday through Friday at noon. You must get there early in order to get a seat. We arrived about 10 and walked through the buildings and had to hurry to find seating. The monks perform on Saturdays.

This, to me, was fascinating. There are many of these tiled alcoves, each representing a province in Spain. Each tells a story. This is what I found for this one: "After the defeat in the First Punic War, the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca negotiated peace with Rome. Then he turned and chief of the army, conquered the south of the Iberian peninsula in 237 C., making it a province of the Roman Empire. The Carthaginians founded Acra Leuca on an ancient Greek colony, near the present city of Alicante.Ã¢ÂÂ There are all kinds of stories offered in these alcoves. One might want to read about them before viewing them. 3 minutes at each one will take a while to get through them all.

This is a close up of the design that is used throughout the gardens. Moorish in nature.

A view of Granada from Generalife Gardens. There is public performance venue there and several concerts are held during the summer months. Tickets are required and admission can be only from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m OR between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The times on the tickets are checked on a regular basis. If you go, keep your ticket handy, you will need to show it several times.

There are special tickets issued for the evening concerts and other special events.

I made a mistake and posted this on the Kitchen Table. I meant to have this in my regular spot on The Garden Party on the Garden Forum. Please excuse this.
