I find cereal prices outrageous as well. I only buy what's on sale. I like lots of different kinds. My faves are Honey Bunches of Oats, Raisin Bran, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, Mini Wheats and Quaker Oatmeal (the individually packaged flavoured type).

I get the big container of regular oatmeal then doctor it up with maple syrup, brown sugar, or others flavors. Plus it's plain, good for other cooking additions.

I don't eat cereal in the morning. I save it for a treat once every couple of months or so. Since it's a treat, sugary stuff. Corn pops, golden grahams, doctored oatmeal (really that speaks to how much I doctor it, sugar!). I take that back, on some mornings, I might get rice chex with a banana at the hospital.

We eat a wide variety of cereal. My favorite is Fruit Loops, what can I say I am a kid at heart!!!! We have Frosted Mini Wheats, Life, Lucky Charms etc....

I buy cereal when it is on sale and I usually have coupons on top of the sale.

I like cereal as a snack, but not for breakfast. It messes with my blood sugar. My favorite has always been Cheerios. I also like puffed wheat or Chex. Will eat some of the others also, but pretty much just consider them junk food.

I like cereal at nite. Corn Flakes is my favourite.
We also eat All-Bran, Weetabix, Shreddies, Shredded Wheat.

Compliments store brand of Corn Flakes is far superior to Kellogg's.

We buy the store brands of the major cereal brands. toasted oats, wheaties, rice krispies,little bales of hay known as shredded wheat, corn flakes and we doctor them up with fruit. We also have oat meal and my all time favorite GRITS, We have cereal most mornings. Great snack too.

I regard most boxed cereals as junk food. Highly processed grains mixed with sugar and preservatives, and sprayed with vitamins. You're paying for a lot of air.

I admit many of them taste good, and a bowl of cereal is a tempting way to start the day. But if I hadn't stopped doing that many years ago I'd be on a diabetes drug by now, or worse.

Plain shredded wheat is an exception, and I occasionally buy the bite-size kind and mix it with oat bran, which I eat every day. I also like muesli and some granolas.

I am eating a bowl of Special K with Berries at the computer now LOL. My FIL bought a club sized box when he was visiting. I wasn't wild about it at first, but now that the box is 3/4 done, I really like it. I'm not talking about Special K, but I've noticed many of the 'healthier organic or granola' types don't have nearly as much vitamins-barely any.

I eat all kinds too, Red berries I like, Krispies w/banana, grape nuts, Mini wheats. Anyone remember Team cereal? I loved it!

Oatmeal, Mini-Wheats, Post Great Grains. DH eats Cheerios Multigrain (ridiculous ripoff @ $4/lb). We almost always add a banana or fruit in season. Sundays we have eggs, a little bacon, half a giant muffin, OJ.

My maternal grandmother had shredded wheat and two soft boiled eggs on toast almost every morning of her life. She lived well into her eighties.

I've been experimenting lately. I have been eating Kashi Heart to Heart Honey Toasted Oat Cereal or Cinnamon Toasted Oat Cereal for several years. It's been my staple for several years now. However, I find myself ravenously hungry before lunch time so I'm trying to eat more protein for breakfast.

I didn't care for oatmeal as a kid but found I love steel cut oats. They are a nice hearty breakfast but a PITA to make every morning. I'll make a batch on Monday with some dried fruit and heat it up for the rest of the week. I did find some really good instant steel cut oats (Best Oats) so I'll start eating them when my cold cereal runs out (this week).

I also find eating a whole grain English muffin with almond butter and a bit of organic preserves keeps those mid-morning munchies away! Or scrambled eggs with some ham and mushrooms.

I also love oatmeal, Cream of Wheat and Red River, which is a hot cereal only available in Canada. It's loaded with oats, wheat, flax. It takes 20 minutes to cook

I don't eat cereal for breakfast, but sometimes I'll have it for lunch, faster than a sandwich or soup ;) DH will have a bowl of cereal when he comes back from meeting his friends for weekend coffee, doesn't eat it during the week. Shredded wheat, Cheerios, Grapenuts Flakes, or Raisin Bran, nothing with the artificial fruit or sugar coatings.

~I eat the same cereal everyday. Natures Path Flax cereal with some Fiber 1 sprinkled on top. On Wednesdays and Saturdays I'm not at the gym or running so I might spoil myself with toast and PB or raspberry jam.

My DH eats shredded wheat with fiber 1 and a sliced banana everyday.
Make sure to check the sugar levels in the muesli and granola because depending on the brand they, especially granola, can be extremely high in sugar. Unless you make your own.

I don't like any cereal Haven't eaten it in years.
I eat a bowl of fresh fruit for breakfast - healthier than all that starch, fat, and sugars from a lab.

"Everything in moderation" sounds good, Casey, but humans have too many individual differences to make it work. I was classified as "pre-diabetic" in my 20s. I lost 50 lbs. in 1995 by eating low-carb, and I couldn't have done it with cereal.

My parents ate cereal most mornings and my dad lived to be 90. But he didn't have my blood-sugar problems nor my abnormally high triglycerides.

Dees, I'm a fan of steel-cut oats too. One of my friends has a small crock pot that she makes it in, overnight. I think I'd prefer your method.

Another vote for steel cut oats, preferably with a banana mashed into it. McCann's Irish Oatmeal has a short cut method on the label - pour the oats into a pot of boiling water, take it off the stove and let it sit overnight. They recommend putting the hot pot into the fridge (bad idea). I tried it, found the oatmeal was too pasty.

Monica, you're probably getting the same sugar jolt from a bowl of fruit as you'd get from a bowl of cereal.

Our breakfast varies.... sometimes an egg-muffin combo, mine just egg and muffin or toast, DH has his with an english muffin (well buttered) Canadian bacon and cheese. We poach the egg in the micro, and it is a great breakfast for the motor home when traveling. Sometimes we have steel cut oatmeal with whatever fruit is handy (fresh preferred, frozen if available.... never banana for me, but DH has his banana every day.We keep Cherrio's mostly for a dry snack of late since we are watching our sugar intake.

Oh I love Red Mill Steel Cut Oats. We have the little crock-pot that we make them in.We try to fix them on Friday nights to have on Saturday mornings. We don't eat cereal every morning. Like this morning, I fixed whole grain English muffins, an egg, piece of cheese, and some bacon leftover from Sunday. Fridays are usually bagels with cream cheese.Thursday it will be scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, and a piece of whole wheat toast.

Old Fashion Quaker Oats with a chopped Granny Smith apple and a cup of fat free milk nuked, then I add a handful of chopped walnuts and a little bit of orange juice. Delish.

Also like shredded wheat and cheerios.

No corn meal mush? I love it with sugar and a little milk. Never have liked hot cereals drowning in milk or mixed in.
Once in awhile I get in a corn flakes mood, or for sentimental reasons buy one of the cold cereals from my childhood.

I don't eat cereal. The only cereal I buy is Rice Krispies for some type of bars. But that has been over two years since I made those type of bars. Instead I generally have a protein shake with fruit and spinach for breakfast or on the weekends, I eat eggs. i feel much better when I do that.

I am not a breakfast eater, so often times I will have oatmeal mixed with brown sugar and fresh fruit for dinner. The only other boxed cereal I like is Cinnamon toast crunch, but only to snack on dry.

Grits is much like corn meal mush. I like corn meal mush with sugar and milk. Would eat grits that way too, but not like most folks like it with cheese and stuff in it.

My favorite cereal is Kellogg's Special K with blueberries. Can't find those now. Today I bought a box of Kroger Peanut Butter Mufti-Grain Toasted Cereal. I had never even noticed it before. When I get a new box of cereal I open the box and pour the cereal into a Tupper ware container to keep it fresh. A few flakes fell out and I picked them up and ate them. I think I've found a new snack food. They were so good!

About twice a month......instant steel cut oats, shredded wheat or honey bunches of oats w/ almonds.

I rarely eat breakfast but my favorite cereals when I do are frosted mini wheats and peanut butter Captain Crunch. I do like cream of wheat too.

In the winter I love oatmeal and during the warmer months I enjoy Rice Crispies, or plain Cheerios and sometimes any of the Chex cereals. Sometimes topped with fresh fruit if I have it on hand.

Sitting here eating my Kelloggs Raisin Bran. I stock up when it is on sale. For a long time I was hooked on Quaker Oatmeal Squares but they got outrageously expensive. I haven't even seen them in the store lately. I also like Mom's Best Naturals Raisin Bran and Kashi Heart to Heart Honey Toasted Oat Cereal. I eat Cheerios for a snack and I love oatmeal in the winter, but hate cleaning up the gluey mess.

I agree that boxed cereals have become much too expensive.

I have to say, I'd never thought of grits as a cereal, but by pure definition, I'd say yes. Cream of wheat or oatmeal mush, why not cornmeal? It's a grain, so yes!

I have come to depend on a wide variety of grains, seeds, and nuts to manage my cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, and weight. It's very easy to avoid products with added sugar, artificial flavorings, and processed flours. I often add some to my daily green drink.

I'm a big fan of Bob's Red Mill cereals and buy the muesli regularly. Add fresh fruits and a few chopped nuts and it makes a high protein, rib sticking meal. I keep an assortment of Red Mill products around for hot cereal, too. Buckwheat groats, yum!

Grits....love them! We buy them from an old stone mill not far from here. I made shrimp and grits for a crowd on our trip to Florida (just came home yesterday) and I brought the grits from home, lol.

In the winter I prefer whole grain toast with peanut butter and a sliced banana or old fashioned oatmeal that I add frozen blueberries to. In the summer it is usually GrapeNuts with frozen blueberries or a banana. I always use Vanilla Silk Soy rather than milk on my cereal. I use milk for my lattes.

I eat cereal as a snack. It amazes me how people can eat dessert for breakfast - doughnuts, muffins, pancakes etc.

In winter plain old-fashioned oatmeal, or 8- or 12-grain cereal, Red River that Jasdip refers to when I can find it, sometimes Cream of Wheat, but it's rather bland, I often add either some raisins or some cut-up dates.

In summer Shreddies, corn flakes, store-brand equivalent to Cheerios, mini wheats, sometimes Special K (which they said the other day to be the favourite) but it's sort of puffy - do you think that a breeze might blow it away? Often cut up some dates.

If you take a check of the price of Raisin Bran ... you may find that buying a box of bran flakes and dropping in a semi-handful of raisins would be less costly.

Kelloggs Canadian plant having been in London for many long years, about to close in a few months (moving production to the States) ...

... I'm considering a boycott of Kelloggs' stuff.

Cheerios is still my favorite cold cereal. I like Cream of Wheat plain not coco wheats. I usually put cinnamon and sugar in it though. I remember once when I was at home and a storm must have come up suddenly and we didn't have any cereal and my DM made us cornmeal mush for breakfast. It was one of my favorite cereals. DH likes The bales of large Shredded wheat, hates the small ones. He also likes bran flakes but no raisins in it. Another one is Wheaties, but when he eats the bales or Wheaties and maybe the bran he likes to crush them into the bottom of the bowl and pour milk on them and then microwave them. He learned that from his dads cousin. He also likes oatmeal. He said Rice Krispies don't work to well for crushing though.

We haven't been eating any type cereal for a while because of a fairly low carb diet. When we do eat cereal, it's usually steel cut oats or a hot multigrain cereal. We add either fresh or frozen fruit, but no sugar. If we eat cold cereal, it's usually plain Cheerios. We don't eat typically eat sweetened cereals - too much sugar.

What do you consider to be a sweetened cereal, kittiemom? Sugar IS one of the ingredients of plain Cherrios.

snidely, you're really on a rip aint ya? We know it all has sugar, but some have lower levels than others. Like the milk you pointed out on the other thread. Sure, lactose. Got it. Already knew it! Same with the fruit. Guess what? so do carrots, beets, asparagus, and many other foods, such as starches and grains. Chill already! We're not out to eat solidly protein only foods, but then, you'll probably preach about fats. We gotta eat something.

Fats are of course essential and good fats are very healthful when consumed in limited amounts. On the other hand, fried foods are eaten in excess in parts of the country and that has a negative affect on disease rates and longevity.

I try hard not to preach anything except perhaps the importance of being thoughtful. By that I mean that I wish more people would form their opinions based on their own thoughts, not based upon what they hear others say.
