tick puller?

I haven't found any ticks on my nearly-5-year-old terrier yet, but I'd like to be prepared (especially considering that when I found a tick on me about 8 years ago, after a walk with my first dog, I had a devil of a time unlodging it from my stomach; have no idea how it got there! I found it right as we walked back into the house, so I can't blame the dog for cuddling up next to me and letting the bug jump to me).

For those who have some sort of tick puller -- I see a few types on Amazon -- which works very well for you?

I had a tick on back my head years ago, which my hair dresser found.

He lit a match, blew it out and stuck the hot end to the tick.

Off it fell.

I agree with Glenda. That works.

What I do: Rub Vaseline all over the tick, especially at the head. It can't breathe and will back out quickly. When it does, just lift off with a Kleenex and kill it.

I got my 2 cycle Mantis in 1999 for $200 and I still use it regularly. I never empty the gas or do recommended maintenance and it continues to run fine. It takes a few times to start but once it's running, it stays running and then starts immediately if I turn it off for a while. I put in gas additive to prevent gumming. I replaced the gas primer pump that cracked and got new air filters and replaced the lost pins to hold the tines. The pull starter rope just broke and I replaced it with rope I had. The spring from the starting puller popped out and I bent it trying to wind it so I am buying a new one. I am sorry others have bad luck with theirs. I am grateful mine works this well, and am impressed with the strength of the tines.

"Does pressure lubrication mean Briggs has an oil pump?" Well, yes....."pressure lubrication" DOES mean there is an oil pump. You need to address the "ticking" sound, and quickly too. You need to post the engine numbers (MODEL # and TYPE #) so we can view the IPL for your engine. You must understand that you should not run this engine further until you determine just what is causing the "tick". One cause could be that one of the screws that held the choke "butterfly" in place has been embedded into either the piston crown, or into the cylinder head, and is producing a slight tap each time the piston reaches TDC. If this is the case and the screw is dislodged again, it will further chew up the insides of the combustion chamber and cylinder. Another cause of this noise (based on the high RPM info) would be a bent pushrod. This could have occurred when the engine sped up "ungoverned" and "floated" the valves, allowing a pushrod to partially escape from a rocker arm. With the valve "floating" to the open position and the pushrod perched on the edge of the rocker arm cup....the piston would have struck the valve and the resulting blow could have bent a pushrod. Now that the pushrod is bent......there is TOO MUCH clearance between the valve and the rocker arm, resulting in the "ticking". You will need to remove the valve covers and go through the procedure for checking the valve clearances. If you do this and find a valve with far too much clearance (aka "lash"), you will need to inspect the pushrod serving that valve to see if it is bent. Before we get into the details of "how to DIY", post the critical numbers from your engine.

Thanks Walt! I am beginning my reassembly now. By the way, I did all of the cutting on the pulley with a Dremel tool. Actually a black and decker wizard with the wand attachment and a 1.5" as well as a 1" cut off wheel. It might have taken a little longer, but I was able to get closer to the sump without worry of cutting into it. I had to bend open the pulley in places to get the tool deep enough to cut through the thicker middle section of the pulley but that was eased by the cutting to the holes the guys at the machine shop drilled in order to use a wheel puller on it.

Update--No bacon this morning but I did pull the valve cover. laying in the valve cover was the exhaust valve shim. It didn't look like the adjuster was backed out or anything else was wrong. I put the shim back on top of the valve stem and adjusted both valves---still no compression. I rotated to TDC and blew compressed air in the spark plug hole. Air came out the muffler. I tried rotating the engine all the way through while putting in air, and air always came out of the exhaust--only out of the intake when it was open. I pulled the head and found the problem--the exhaust valve seat had come out. I figure at the factory they superheat the head and cool the seat to press it in--so why did mine come out--only 2 1/2 years old, not abused, change the oil etc. Anyway I went to the B&S site and looked up the head p/n using my parts manual that came with the cub. That part has been replaced by a newer p/n, along with a different gasket. Think they are having head problems? must be--the new head is out of stock and no backorder date. This seems to be a common theme--putting out products without fully testing or just putting them out as quickly as possible. I have a honda min-tiller that after 2 years of light use, the transmission gears went out. Could not buy a replacement gear, only a new transmission. The transmission was a different part number and the old one was no longer available. Maybe I'm just paranoid but I'm beginning to think that the manufacturers are happy with their design guys if the product will only last a little past the warranty. Thanks for the help fl in alabama

Ticked Off. It looks like a measuring spoon with a slit in it. The tick winds up in the bowl of the spoon and easily disposed of. It's very good for stubborn ticks.

My friend loves the one that twists (like Tick Twister?) -- he can only buy them through his Vet though.

I bought my Tick Twister on Amazon (or possibly eBay). The package included two sizes.

Having an intimate relationship with ticks, unfortunately, I read a lot on the subject. Experts advise that methods involving suffocating or inflicting pain on the tick are not recommended. Putting a tick in those situations can result in more of the tick-borne bacteria entering our bloodstreams.

I had a lttle plastic thing with a narrowing slit near the end, did I get it from the vet? It was to twist. Not sure where to find it.

Was surprised to find two ticks on me the other day, the first in ages, and I'd been only minimally outside ... felt something near my wrist watch, it was one scurrying, so grabbed it, dropped it on desk, hit it with fingernail.

Later that day had some discomfort at my hip, looked down (it was warm and I was travelling about the house in my skivvies), saw the black spot, pulled it off and treated it as I had the earlier one.

I hope that it is not about to be a bad summer for ticks.
