Cape Cod Lighthouses

There were so many lighthouses around Cape Cod that we couldn't get to them all. We even went to Martha's Vineyard and saw a couple there also.

If you go up to Maine don't miss the Portland Headlight. It's the prettiest one I've ever seen. I love lighthouses.

It's not super close to Wellfleet but I LOVE the Sandwich Glass Museum... and Sandwich itself is a charming little town - it's also the last weekend for the walking tour of the town they offer. If you are into that sort of thing and go, I highly recommend you get there early enough to see the glass blowing demonstration... the woman who was there when I went was fantastic and if you go to the last demo of the day, she attempts a very very large piece (often does not work but you get a good discussion about why etc). Anyway I am a real glass person so I loved this. If you like architecture and lighthouses, I would look into lighthouse tours - there are a ton around here. Not sure what their hours are... Columbus day is kind of the last big hurrah around here before the seasonal stuff closes down for the winter. Not sure if any of the whale watching cruises or stuff like that is going on. I don't know the cape all that well but I moved to Martha's Vineyard almost a year ago. Fall is my favorite time here but that is because things quiet down! It's beautiful here on the island and might make a nice day trip but a lot of stuff is closed down right now - but there are still walking trails with gorgeous views, downtown Vineyard Haven has a lot of stuff open year round and some of my favorite restaurants are open year round. The ferry ride is also really nice! If you come to the island I can give you some pointers on that.

Here are two colors, a charcoal and a sage, on your siding. You can see the effect of the former. Honestly, I think you'd get the biggest effect by painting out the garage doors in a shade of gray or greige, just to return emphasis to the house itself.

I think it was originally a Cape but shed dormers were added on the front and back. I also don't think you should paint the brick. There is nothing wrong with yours and it's not that unusual to have the second story be a different color than the first. I also would look at grays for the siding. Hardie has a selection of prefinished colors. Hopefully one of them will suit. The most unattractive feature of your house is the window on the second story in the front. The half moon over it is odd, and the window is too small for the expanse of exterior wall. Since the interior configuration is a major determining factor in whether you can change this, I don't know if it is an option to change it. But if you're residing, that is the time to consider such a change. Two or three separate windows spaced across the facade or expansion of the existing window so it's wider (three windows instead of two) would improve the appearance of the house.

Sorry everyone is not on board with your plans. I understand the idea of having a great master suite, but the plan just doesn't seem right. How many bedrooms is the house now? How large is your family? How long are you staying in the home? Would it be better to make that level for kids and guests and changing the main level to have first floor living and to be able to age in place? Just some thoughts.... As for the windows - I always felt that on the front of the house there should be some sort of alignment or balance, but the sides and back can be any placement - do what's best for the layout. I like Andrew's idea for windows. Make sure to ask your architect about making changes - some allow a certain amount of changes, others charge for every little thing. Good luck

Glad to see the Lighthouses on Old Cape Cod.... and nice the weather is getting warmer for you as well Nita.Enjoy your stay .Try the Kreme and Kone on 28 in w.Dennis for some great food as a suggestion, and Captain Parkers on 28 S. Yarmouth.

Did you take the tour on Martha's Island? Go to the stores, especially the book store (if it was still there)? We did many years ago and it was well worth it.

NITA...you were on Cape Cod? I know I'm out of the KT loop but...crap on a cracker...if I had known you were here, we could have met for lunch!

From your pictures I can see that you were in Truro, Three sisters in Eastham, Fort Hill in Eastham...where I have lunch at least twice a month, Chatham and the ferry going to MV? I hope you were able to stop at some of the historic cemeteries along the way, lots of pilgrims graves and markers.

Oooo..did you make it to First Encounter Beach in Eastham?...that's where the Pilgrims met the Indians for the first time. Did you see all the Windmills along the way? Saltbox houses, cranberry bogs, seals? I could have given you a guided tour!

I hope you had a good time and as I remember, the weather was good on the 11th and even all this week. You made it on and off the Cape before the major pollen bloom which believe me, is a very, very good thing to have missed!

I hope you come back...lots of good food to eat and lots of fun things to do! So sorry I missed you!
