My Grandson will be going to Cape Town, S. Africa this summer

He will spend 2 months there learning (computer) coding. He is majoring in Computer Science.

As many of you know he got a full scholarship to Dartmouth and is just finishing his first year and getting all A's.

Last summer he went to Beijing and was learning Mandarin. He had a wonderful time and I'm sure he will have a great time in Africa, too.

Handsome and brilliant says proud grandmother. He's always gotten A's and is musically gifted, too

Hi Guys As Lisa says, there are too many plain ol' variegated Neos. There are ofcourse the stunners that we all need ala kahala dawn, milagro, ying/yang etc. ect. I must say the some of G. Groves bright coloured plants are better (yes I said it)than most of the variegated plants around. Anyone willing to share the secret to creating plants like his? Thanks Kerry! Why is talk about variegated seedlings taboo? Sorry Lisa....it must be the "variegated fingers"! I have managed to get other plants to set seed that dont normally like to. I would gladly pass on the seed parents name to you, but it doesnt have a name. The story is this: 3 South Africans visited Central and South America a good few years ago. While there they popped into Chesters place and he then gave them a few odd plants, turns out that one of these is the elusive transmitter (or a one time luck shot)....its called (not sure who gave it the name) variegata red. After having been absent for so long (trips to The Netherlands and New Zealand) I came home a few weeks ago to my gardens that I had expanded (ref. post Balance in the Garden) but had not planted let alone mulched to a world of weeds I never imagined could move in so quickly (worse than second cousins on welfare). I have spent the last few weeks spreading 15 yards of mulch hoping that would slow things down but I am not so sure...any way POLLY HILL yes we need to do a trip. She is probably best known for her azalea introductions, my yucca's are in bloom now, deep pink, light pink, white, and the occasional half white half pink blossom the size of a standard petunia blossom. Magnolia's are another plant that her name is often associated with. We also have some amazing nurseries and of course a slightly different flora. I would love to host a weekend this summer and or possibly one in early fall. The first detail to work on is housing I have room to sleep eight to ten (five dormitory style in a garage apartment and two guest rooms with double beds as well as a room with one single). Rentals although I am sure are still available are very $$$ but if enough people share perhaps that's an option. Prior to making arrangements I suppose I should ask is any one interested?? Katy

Cori Ann, that was a hilarious story, I could not stop laughing! By the way, I posted some pics of TRM climbing over an arch on your post, hope it can help in answering your question. By the way, I also saw you ordered Figaro Panarosa - you will looooove that rose - it is one of my favourites with very little thorns (I have it espaliered on the fence between Claire Rose and John Claire). Please update us later on how it is growing in your garden! Beth and Cynthia: Acropolis is very pretty! We don't have it here but I wish I could see it in real life. Koko Loko is not in commerce here either but I obtained one plant from Ludwig (I actually had two but one did not make it). I rarely see the brown colouring on it but I love the grey tones as well. I do however wish I could get a rose with the same colouring in a nice old fashioned shape. I will try to post some more photos soon but will do it on the rose gallery :-) Liezel

It should be interesting. Cape Town, SA is entering their winter as we enter our summer.

Warn your son to watch out for pick-pockets in crowded lobbies such as airports, bus and train stations, and hotel lobbies. Main targets are wallets, pass ports, jewelry and watches. Do not leave any luggage unattended for a second.

Several people I know have been to Cape Town as a stop on the Semester at Sea voyage. They all loved it: Hikes with stunning views off of Table Mountain, One of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world, local wine, and the chance to see some of Africa's famous wildlife. Even if he doesn't learn anything more in the classes than he would in similar classes in America, it will likely be a transformative experience.
