Is it in, for, or on?

I'm 67 and live in northeastern PA. For my entire life I've waited "in" line, or queue, and "for" someone to arrive. More and more I'm hearing "on" substituted for in and for, as "I'm waiting on line at the grocery." or "I'm waiting on Mrs. Smith." Is it regional, generational, both or something other? Opinions please.
