"A Star For Mrs. Blake" by April Smith.

It centers on a woman from coastal Maine and four other Gold Star Mothers -- from very different backgrounds -- who meet traveling to France to visit the graves of their sons, who died in WWI.

I had not known that the US government offered this pilgrimage to bereaved mothers, nor that nearly seven thousand of them took the journey.

The author develops realistic characters with believable 'back stories'. The book is lively, despite the sad theme bringing the people together -- the mothers, their military escorts, and people they meet abroad. Emotions and story feel contemporary, despite the setting a hundred years ago.

I'm only half-way through this book, but I'm enjoying it.
