Virus on computer-any words of wisdom Raven?

While surfing just now on Safari my screen clicked to an official looking FBI website and locked up. Here is the disturbing message:

Typed in all Red

Attention! Your browser has been blocked up for safety reasons listed below. All the actions on this PC are fixed. All your files are encrypted. CONDUCTED AUDIO AND VIDEO

Then this is typed in black beneath that

You are accused of viewing/storage and/or dissemination of banned pornography (child pornography/zoophilia/rape etc.) You have violated world declaration on non-proliferation of child pornography. You are accused of committing the crime envisaged by Article 161 of United States of America criminal law. Article 161 of United States of American criminal law provides for the punishment of deprivation of liberty for terms from 5 to 11 years.

Then there is a section where I can use some kind of moneypal to send them payment of 300.00 to unlock my computer.

It is all very official looking except for the somewhat stunted English, and luckily for me I also have Firefox on my browser. This is my computer alone and I have never watched any porn on it but I suppose if I had I might be nervous? Not sure what to do now. Is my computer still safe to use.

No its not you it is an infection.
I will give you a link to another forum I am on where we can help you step by step in cleaning it up for you.
When you go to the forum you will need to register and get an email reply.
Then please start your own thread in the malware help section. You can give my name as the referral. In the meantime don't do anything financial on the pc.

Ellie if you only have anti virus you are at risk. I would suggest you get Malwarebytes and SUPERantispyware, both of which are free. These require you to manually update and run scans but they only need doing every one to 3 weeks depending on how conscientious/nervous you are. I never leave my external hard drive connected to the computer. This is both for safety and economy. Connected it is open to attack and also runs all the time. If you have a factory built computer your power supply might be taxed to a degree unless your external drive is self powered. Most today are not self powered I believe. You wrote: If I can't bring my computer up ( that is called a crash or a blue screen) I install my recovery discs first. The CD drive works even if the computer has crashed. There is no real answer to this untill the catastrophic event occurs. You might get clues for days before the event to warn you. There would also be valuable clues in the event of a blue screen of death from the error message displayed. (BSOD) I assume you mean Best Buy replaced a defective hard drive with a new one? What was written on the labels of the disks from BB? That would be a clue as to what they are for. As I noted before recovery disks allow you to take your computer back to the new state it was in when purchased, a backup created on your external drive will return the computer to the state at the time of that backup. Any work saved in between would be lost. You can store your data on the computer itself and back it up to the external drive for protection. Always a good plan to have data you do not wish to lose saved in 2 locations Outlook is generally a part of Microsoft Office although I understand it can be bought as a stand alone program - quite expensive too. One would presume Cobian Backup came with your Go_Flex drive. It is good that you ask these questions but be sure to allow yourself to enjoy the benefit these things can bring you. A computer is only as good as the person sat in front of the keyboard. Urlee and Cat_ky I have no issues with anyone owning more than one computer, I have 6 and all working yet I live alone. But to purchase another computer "just in case" seems rather more than odd to me and a complete waste of money for an item that keeps becoming out of date with alarming regularity. Don expressed it very wisely I think.

oh that is bad you have some very serious infections there. Yes that would be your problem for sure. I am going to give you the link to another forum you will have to go to so we can help you run some other scans to fully clean up your computer, we will take it step by step so don't get worried, just stop and ask if you have any questions ok. go to this link, register there, you will have to wait for a reply back, then go to this area for Malware removal and start your own post there or if you prefer I can start if for you. I am there on that forum too, we can get you cleaned up just be patient and do not try to use that computer for anything important or purchase or bank related. You've got some great advice above. 14 year olds are little hormone casseroles and I'm sure they must feel terrible about themselves when their emotions get the best of them. Just give them some slack on the little things and choose your battles wisely. Like others here, I was very consistent when my kids were young, in fact, I found out later that my sisters used to talk about me behind my back because they thought I was too strict with my son's behavior. None of my sisters had kids at that time and later one of them told me that she used to think I was too strict but that she realized how well my kids listened to me because they knew I meant what I said. I didn't give my kids warnings over and over. I told them what behavior I expected and if they didn't follow it, we left or stopped what we were doing. Sometimes I felt like I was punishing myself because we'd have to leave stores, resturaunts, even grandpa and grandmas house. It was exhausting, but so worth it. That said, I thought 14 was the toughest age with my DS. He seemed to think that because he was now physically bigger than me, that we were equals. WRONG. There were a few times when he spoke disrepectfully to me, thought he was smarter than I am and was just a pain in the butt. One thing that worked for me my son was disrepectful to me is my husband (his dad) made it clear to our son that not only was I his mother and it was wrong to speak to me that way, but my husband would not tolerate anyone speaking to his wife disrespectfully, he said "don't you dare speak like that to my wife, I will not allow anyone to speak to her like that and if it continues, you will deal with me" Now, my husband isn't mean or scary or violent or anything like that but it made quite an impression on my son. 14 was a struggle but the rest of his teenage years were mostly alot of fun. Teenagers are such interesting people and its so fun to watch the little person you nurtured grown into a wonderful young adult. It really helps to keep your sense of humor through this too.

I have currently 4 tablets, one that is strictly an ereader, I got each of us one, very inexpensive. My husband loves it and uses his daily, I really don't use that one anymore but it will be his backup. I got the first pandigital novel 7 inch tablet which was a great tablet but it is outdated as far as the version of android on it goes, that one I passed down to a family member. I also have a 7 inch Sylvania that was also inexpensive which I used a lot and still do on occasion, that one will not be updated either but is fine for my husband to use to read the kindle books on and play solitaire and check email or Google something which is about the extent of his use. The one I use daily is my Vizio Vtab 1008 tablet it is still being updated and it will get the latest version of android ics in the near future, Vizio mentioned that recently when showing the new 10 inch tablet they are releasing soon. I love my tech toys but I don't spend a lot of money on them. The Vizio is the most expensive one and I got it as a refurbished unit for a very good price, luckily it was perfect. The laptop is a gift I got for my husband, I rarely use it, I do the updates on it. I do have an Acer netbook that I did use quite a bit, and still do when I travel, I prefer the keyboard. For daily use my desktop is custom made has 2 hard drives one with Linux one with windows. I use Mepis Linux pretty much exclusively for daily use. I do have a couple of other towers but they are backup. Luckily my husband supports my addict.... Um I mean hobbies lol. He has been urging me to get the nexus already! I am resisting so far. I guess it is my one vice. It could be worse lol

The problem is there are several variants and some are much worse than others, the only way to make certain that all aspects are completely removed is by having a malware removal professional run the scans necessary to make that determination.

You can take a risk...

Out of curiosity, I clicked on the suggested link. That site has fewer than a handful of posts per month. I found that pretty unusual and wonder why it has so little activity?

Sleeper, if you have a Mac machine, it may be time to get a security program. Or if you're using one, to try a different one.

The team at Landzdown work at many many of the professional malware removal forums but I prefer to send people there because it is a smaller group and the people are very good at being patient and specific hands on experience. Many from GW have been helped there.
All of the ASAP-Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals regulated forum's are great and you will see many of the same names on them, the pros spend an amazing amount of time volunteering.

Sorry, not trying to be obstreperous, but a quick Google search suggests that organization, for whatever it was, no longer exists. I did the search because I'd never heard of it (not that that means anything, there's lots of things I haven't heard of).

Maybe it takes a low volume site to get personal help?
