I'm doing it too. I pick a different amount each week so I am not faced with all the high dollar amounts at the end. It is a wonderful thing to see a jar full of cash!! LOL

I missed Moni's thread when it was first posted. So, no, I'm not saving money in a jar. But I do, sort of, having a savings plan.

My "random savings" plan started about 4 years ago... This is what I do, and it works well for me.

I started by setting aside all crisp $20 bills. When I was still working (I retired at the end of December), I would take $300 cash out of the ATM each month as my spending money (my paycheck, and now my retirement benefit, is direct-deposited each month). The ATM dispenses money in $20 bills. If any of the bills are new, crisp bills, I set them aside and don't spend them. (One month, $280 of my $300 withdrawal was new, crisp bills!)

Then, I started also setting aside ANY crisp bills, no matter what the denomination -- $1, $5, $10, $50, $100. When I pay for something with cash, any crisp bills received as change get set aside.

Since I'm no longer working and don't have the little daily expenses that I used to have (lunch, coffee, etc.), I don't need as much spending money. But, whenever I do take money out of the ATM, I still set aside the crisp $20 bills; and I still set aside all crisp bills I receive.

I "bundle" it in $500 increments. I've saved more than $10,000 this way.

I didn't see the original post, but I saw it somewhere else, facebook perhaps. I've been doing it faithfully! It will be used for Christmas shopping. I have also been doing one at 1/2 the value...gonna surprise my dh with some extra spending $$ for deer hunting week. I sure wish I would've thought of doing it backwards!!! Next year!

I think I am going to start now, so next year, at this time, I will have the car tag bill taken care of....

I'm interested that some posting *see* enough actual currency to save any. Our income and outgo are mostly direct deposit and withdrawal from our checking account.

DH and I pull $200 in twenties out of checking a couple of times a year; mostly for tips, Veterans' Day poppies, etc. I carried the same two dollars in change in my purse for years until getting a cell phone.

Everything that costs more than a dollar or two goes on one of our two CC's. Both 'pay back'.

We've never had the idea that paying by CC isn't 'real money' and have never carried a balance on our cards. Any excess in the checking account is invested.

Charging everything makes it VERY CLEAR where the money goes when the statement arrives every month!

I'm so far behind all of you! I got a duck piggy bank and started putting quarters in it...in another Donald Duck piggy bank I started putting in dimes...in my wallet the only change I keep is pennies and nickels...keeping bills would certainly lead to some real cash savings..

Instead of writing cheques/(checks) in days/weeks that one can't stand the required tariff ... as ripping up each cheque (check) costs real money ...

... how about writing an "I O U" and dropping it into the jar. And when the required amount gets large, leave some space on the paper to cross off the "$30.00" and write in "$25.00" when you put an extra $5.00 into the jar.

Also, how about writing each of the amounts required day by day/week by week on a slip of paper, putting them all into a hat, and drawing one out on each occasion, so that one doesn't suffer the large(and increasing) pain in successive periods, as the plan matures.

Spread the pain.

Being rather frugal, by long-experienced training (that started early), and having a fairly comfortable financial cushion in place, I'm not following this plan ...

... but commend those of you who are.

Examine each proposed purchase as to need (or merely "want") .

If you're carrying debt, including credit card debt (especially credit card debt, at the rates/fees that they charge!) make a serious attempt to pay it off - as buying something before you can pay for it means borrowing someone else's money ... and the fee/interest that you pay is time that you're working for nothing ... well, not exactly - but the self-indulgence of buying something before you can afford it out of current income - actual necessities excepted.

Also ... everyone needs a financial cushion ... so that when an emergency develops ... one has cash on hand to cover the necessary price, without sweating blood.

Boss your money ... or, more than likely - it'll boss you!

I like your idea OJ! I just made up some pieces of paper with the remaining weeks' amounts in. This will be fun!

I'm doing it too. I want to buy a "new" saddle for my horse and some other "horsey" related items. I'm by my new horse like an old man who gets a sports car. I want her decked out really fine.

I'm a knitter and I am constantly buying yarn, as if I don't have enough already! Hubs tells me I have enough to open my own yarn store, which is probably true... So having extra cash to buy yarn is always a good thing!
