I agree, sounds like they are trying to get more money for fixing something you did not have to pay for.

About 3 years ago, we heard a thump in our front end, and it wasn't steering properly. Took it to our dealership, and he said he had good news and bad news. The bad news was that it was going to cost about $2300 to fix. The Good news was that it was covered under a recall.

My car is older and it was still covered. Even though I didn't have the paperwork, it was in the computer.

No other suggestions were made, to generate money, although I did tell them to do a couple of extra things, since we saved a bundle that day.

I believe that if it's on a 'recall' that the dealership will fix it 'free'. I think they (the dealershhip) get a rebate from the car manufacturer so the car manufacturer pays, not the dealer.

We have had a couple of recalls for various things. Didn't mean that the parts were faulty on our car, necessarily, but they don't discriminate - they just replace the parts on all the vehicles. Check your VIN number - sometimes they only replace the parts on the vehicles with particular VIN numbers.

I have one of those GMs (Cobalt, vintage 2005) that had a recall notice recently, about the ignition key, that the engine might stop unexpectedly, which could cause major problems. Story was that it has caused some deaths.

The news here was that one lost power steering (which is true - but I have strong arms) and power brakes ... which isn't precisely true.

My can(1), with a standard transmission, often gets turned off when approaching stop lights that have just turned yellow, half a block away, or when going downhill, if I don't have another vehicle behind, ready to crawl up my tailpipe.

I have two to three pushes on the power brakes before the residual power goes off and I have to push hard to get action.

I received notice some time ago that I should have nothing hanging from the key, as that tended to initiate the trouble sooner.

Haven't taken it in for replacement of the ignition switch, yet.

Story was that the part 's cost was 57 cents.

The recall was legit. What you got was "upselling" by the service department. We go to an independent mechanic who has a long list of things that the dealership try to sell to service customers that are useless/unnecessary/wasteful.

We had a recall last December, took the car to the dealership and had the issue fixed, but then we were told that a belt was "dangerously worn", Our mechanic said it's normal wear and good for another 10,000 miles.

You don't indicate how many miles were driven between January and March, the year your vehicle was made, the driving conditions you encounter or what they found wrong with the vehicle in April.

The recall was legit. I've taken cars in for recalls before. They may check other things as a courtesy and, if they are like a lot of Ford dealers, will check things like brake pads, tire tread, various fluids, front end alignment etc. Their checks are rather comprehensive and may list very minor issues.

Is it possible your brake pads went from green to yellow (or red) since the last check? Your washer fluid level is low? You're due for an oil change? The O2 sensor needs to be replaced? Cabin filters are dirty? Your tires are worn? You need a recommended interval service? Absolutely! This list could be extensive! See how quickly I came up with 7 items?

If you were to provide more information on your car and what items they've flagged, I would be able to judge whether or not the recommended service was really needed.

It could be that many dealers seldom do such upselling by claiming a need for actually unneeded repairs.

But no one would be making a fuss about such action(s) ... even if happening hundreds of times.

I has a 1998 model that had a recall after it was 4 yrs old. The problem: After some use and wear, the shifter interlok may fail to prevent the shifter from moving from park after the key is turned off. I checked mine and with a little extra urging, the shifter would move out of park.

The part was replaced without charge.

My ExDH worked the service desk at a dealership for awhile.
The manufacturer had predetermined how long each job should take. For example, they might get paid 15 minutes for an oil change, 10 minutes for wipers, 30 for a headlight. (I'm guessing at the times)
If they were good and fast, a mechanic could get 10 hours pay for 8 hours work.
I remember him telling me that a serpentine belt was a common "problem"... It paid more time than it took to change.
With recalls, the manufacturer reimburses a ridiculously low amount to the dealership. (but dealer must do the work) The mechanics are instructed to find something to help make up the difference.

I am speaking about this one particular dealer, but I suspect this is not an uncommon practice.

That's what I was thinking, I just didn't translate my thoughts into words that well! LOL

A recall is from the manufacture, NOT the dealer. You will take your vehicle to the dealer to have what ever issue taken care of.. usually some part that is known to be defective , usually not a big deal,, and it may not be defective in your paticular auto, but if in other vehicles the same year and model have had problems, and manufacture has improved that, or solved that issue they will put out a recall and that item will be replaced.... even if you have no problems with what ever was recalled...
the dealer will take care of it at the manufactures expense..you should pay nothing,
you can always check if your vehicle has any recalls... just google the year make and model and recalls, you can find them there.. It is a good idea, as if you are not the original owner, you will not be notified.
