Census Bureau request? Anyone get one?

Got a notice in the mail addresses to Resident of----
and have to the survey on line. (to save paper). They claim you HAVE to fill it out or else???? But this is different that the one people come to your door etc ( I think), and it states in a brief letter it is to collect information for the needs of the communities across the United States.
Then goes on to say enclosed brochure answers question, but no brochure-just information where to go on line, with a toll free number to answer questions.
Started to do it, but first thing, wanted my name, address phone number so they could contact me, if necessary. I may call a legal authority to find out what is going on.
Any one else get this notice. Looks official--but you know how that is.

US Census? That't not going to happen for another 5 or 6 years is it? The US census you must fill out.

sounds like a phishing attempt to me I would not give any information. I would definitely find out what it is and if it is legit before doing anything.

I wonder if it could be this American Community Survey?

I would make some phone calls to verify before putting any personal info in anything.

Not that it helps you any but I was actually visiting the KT for a break from the census.gov website, lol. I have spent all morning pulling WV data from the 2000 Census data files (2010 has not been released completely yet). I need it for a comparison with some of the demographic data we collected on a state-wide health needs assessment. We used the Census data to determine how representative our sample is of the overall state. So far fairly representative which is a good thing. I have also used the ACS data for other projects but not as often. I fill out the surveys I get since I actually use them but then I also do not get too many. Heck, the 2010 Census forms were the first ones I ever got! We ask income range (usually use the census income ranges) on several of our surveys- don't care what a specific person/family income is but it is the easiest way to determine if the respondents are representative across socioeconomic levels. I always snicker when someone writes "none of your business" in the margin or if they write "fat" instead of actually writing their weight. I like the fact that they felt empowered enough to speck up for themselves even if it messes up my data analysis.

Hundreds of snow birds and full time RV'ers are notgetting counted because the PO refuses to forward the forms due to restrictions on the census forms that state they cannot be forwarded. It happened here. If someone else picks up the mail to forward, the census form is not given to the person that is authorized to forward. We have a PO box got the form left on the door knob because we were not home. Others got a visit. But we have NO in town delivery,as all the mail goes to the PO. There are many in rural areas that have not gotten forms or received visits as in remote mountain areas also, even after they have called. A couple of people did mail the forms in and the census workers insisited they fill out another form because they claim it had not been received. The homeowners put on the form, 2nd form, which the workers did not like.

It's 36" to the top of the vanity and nearly 41" to the top of the sink. Our upstairs "normal" vanity is 33". We needed to cut off some of the legs to bring it to that height. It worked out well because my husband is quite tall and he appreciates every little bit. I'm short and it's okay for me too. The dreaded finishing question... Prior to the project I had anticipated using a marine varnish on the top, I wanted a really hard, almost bar-top finish. I purchased the bureau on eBay and the finish wasn't very good, I sanded it to smoothe it out and went to our local unfinished furniture store to look at stains. There I got talked into gelstain and a poly gel finish. They insisted it would be hard enough to withstand the water. Well, yes and no. Like newhomebuilder, if I did it again I'd go with stone on top. The sides of the bureau took the stain and poly very well--actually the top did too. I clean it with hot water and a microfiber cloth and dry it with a microfiber cloth. It looks fine but has dulled a bit. In the better picture you can see the edge where it's worn a bit--not as dramatic as in the photo. This happened in another place and it was certainly easy to fix with sanding and reapplication. The woodworking forum has lots of good advice. I'd suggest you troll through the posts before asking your own question. There are at least two members who are very generous with their professional advice but they end up answering the same questions over and over again. They display admirable patience! I'm pretty sure that what I did wouldn't be what the experts would recommend but I do have to say that it was rather simple and the results have been satisfactory.

T'was a great visit but with changes. PJR arrived saying he was starving, being as he had worked out with his dad at the gym, at 5 am, and had not eaten since dinner the night before. So that eliminated the white chili prep. He was just as pleased to go to the nearby Cajun Poboy Restaurant and enjoy great shrimp poboy and gumbo. He was quickly satisfied. We did get in a wonderful one on one visit, no pictures though. He'll be home for 20 days and I'll definitely have pictures at some point. Visit was shorter, Wed, as there is someone in his life, that he was anxious to get with and spend as much time with. She's been in his life, off and on, but has taken on a new level. That's why I haven't met her. Now he wants me to meet her, and have family dinner at my place. THANKS EVERYONE for showing your kind thoughts and interest. You all are special.

The Census does a complete survey once every 10 years, but they do a lot of smaller surveys in between.

Our Canadian census used to be required, with threats of drastic measures, if one reneged, including an old lady having been taken to court recently for having refused, but recently has become in actuality more of a survey ... so many of the statisticians say that the results will be much less certain/trustworthy.

That doesn't sound legitimate to me. 'Have' to fill it out online? There are still households without computers, homeowners who would find that task difficult . Nobody can insist you are proficient in computer skills, any authentic government office would give you a choice is my first thought. I wouldn't fill it out online or otherwise if it didn't include a phone number I could check for more information.

There's no reason to be suspicious, those involved in nefarious activities rarely use snail mail. Does the return address suggest it's going to the Census Bureau? It's true that they do data spot checks in off-cycle years, I've gotten them before.

Call the toll free number to check, I'm sure that will put your mind at ease. If it's not a government agency, you can simply ignore it, all the while keeping your blood pressure at a normal level.

I did call our Attorney General in ND and got a referral number of the district office in Denver and called them. Yes it is legitimate, and they said I could fill out what information I wanted to. It is doing this every month in smaller surveys instead of once every 10 years to everyone but this is different that the one where you give out more detail information. Both people were very information and very nice. They thanked me for calling and checking it out. They even had my address on file for sending to this address.

First I got a letter from the Census Bureau saying I would be getting a Community Survey, then the survey arrived.

Bear in mind that Census information cannot be released until 72 years after the data is collected. The 1940 Census is the most recent to have been released, and it was released on April 2, 2012.
