The hot humid summers without air conditioning.
I don't know how we survived in the heat.

Like Glenda, I don't miss teaching. I love retirement. I also don't miss the long cold winters in Ohio with all the ice and snow. I too don't miss having periods, having to live my life by a clock, getting dressed up every day, driving in all kinds of nasty weather.

I don't miss the threat of illness and death from childhood diseases and other *plagues* that are halted today by vaccines and antibiotics.

In some ways I don't miss the military draft, and in other ways I do.

I don't like some of the teachers I had, also don't miss some of DS teachers. I certainly did not like having periods. I did not like getting perms.

I don't miss outhouses. Dogs running loose around the neighborhood. Most people I know tend to treat them better theses days.

With very few exceptions...from somewhere around 1944 to 1967.

lack of airconditioning in homes and cars, I just could not do it today.
Having to get all dressed up every day, I love being leisure in time and clothing.
Driving, especially to work early in the mornings and especially in weather like ice and snow and heavy rain.
I can't say mosquitoes because unfortunately we are being ravaged right now, can not be outside for long.

Living on so little I don't know how we did it back then.
Definitely periods and the associated pain and headaches

Running up and down to the basement to do laundry. I would never live in a house again that you had to do that. I would go to the Laundromat first.

I don't miss:

Cars without seat belts.

Cigarette smoke in public places, and so many more people smoking.

Drinking and driving (it wasn't much of an issue when I was young).

My old kitchen. My old husband. Long commutes to work by car. Pimples. My kids' guinea pigs. High school bullies. Changing diapers and then washing them because they were cloth. Boot discs for computers. Boom box radios.

(I *loved* riding my old school bus, but taking the bus to work was awful.)

un-air-conditioned schools;
we girls had to wear dresses.
In elementary school we stuck to the wooden seats or to our petticoats, & then in high school, we got red welts from sitting on those darn garters.

Oh Alisande brought up a good one. The smoking, that used to be so commonplace.

When I think of Mom smoking in the car when we were little. and it made my brother and I swore we would never smoke, and we never did.

Phones without Caller Display, LOL. I like calling people back later (maybe)

I don't miss my land line phone. I don't miss milking the cows and the chores that went with it. I do miss the small family farms though.

The thick heavy glasses I had to wear from age 3 until I got contact lenses at 15.....the hard contact lenses I wore for the next 47 years because they were better than glasses to me, but ended up irritating my dry eyes..Finally got early cataracts removed (didn't even know I had them) and don't need anything now but reading glasses....and wouldn't you know, today's glasses are lightweight and fashionable.

I do not miss having to go to school. I absolutely hated it, I was a good student and made mostly As but I just hated going. I swear if I die and go to hell, there will be a school there! HA!

I do NOT miss a television without a remote control.

While I was in Cincinnati to visit my father in the hospital, my older brother arranged to visit a friend who used to live two houses up the street from us when we were young. We later moved across town, and then after high school I left Cincinnati and haven't been back much since. The friend has since bought the house two down the street from her mother -- the house we grew up in. We visited her at that house and it was interesting how little had changed. The kitchen still has the cabinets my father installed 4 decades ago, including the funky, deep, false cabinet in the corner that has no floor, or back or shelves, and serves as head-space for the external basement stairs -- If you open the cabinet you can see the basement stairs and basement floor below.

I had a really pleasant time reminiscing with our old neighbor, and her mother and brother who also stopped by for a visit, but I found I really don't miss the small suburb I grew up in or the city of Cincinnati. At all.

I don't miss shaving in the morning. I trim my beard once a week.

I don't miss needing to shave my legs -- but what's this stuff on my face?

No woman could miss the whole business of menstruation -- the bloating and mild depression prior, the pain, the panic that you'd start early or 'show' or run out of sanitary supplies. Feeling so much better 'after' only made you wonder why you had to go through this every month.

I don't miss wondering if I was doing the 'proper' thing. By now, there are few social tests that concern me.

Hah! I don't miss being a powerless kid, eye level with adults' knees.

Count me in on the no AC in the summer. I'm w/poohbear, I don't know how we survived.

Also, don't miss my period one d@mn bit. The last couple years of it were horrendous.

I don't miss the period either but now I have hot flashes all the time. It's a curse I do believe!

I don't miss having to wait to hear from someone from the other side of the world! Send something in the mail, have it signed, they send it back... then faxes came along. Then email. Love it! Of course, if it's too late (e.g. noon for me, is 6PM at night for Germany, so I might not get it until the next morning), I have to wait. But just a matter of hours at most. Really cool. I hated wait for letters from dad when he was overseas. And phone calls weren't all that swift. Really late at night/early morning and bad reception.
