you break a habit when you decide you WANT to Nail hit on head, there. In my conversations with patients, I often get the feeling that they really don't want to -- they nod their head when we advise them to quit, point out that they've been in the hospital 5 times in the past year for smoking caused problems, and say 'okay' but it is clear that the motivation just isn't there. Just on Monday, for example, had this conversation with someone who is on oxygen at home! and still smoking! And another person with advanced COPD who is smoking pot and thought that was harmless (perhaps the full respiratory arrest and 3 days on a ventilator has convinced her otherwise). Had another guy who had had thirteen -- THIRTEEN -- heart angioplasties and immediately launched into excuses why he couldn't quit when the cardiologist told him that no more could be done. My theory is that "being a smoker" is so strongly associated with some self-image, one that led to picking up the habit in the first place (sophisticated, rebellious, one of the cool kids, grown-up like dad, etc) that the person maybe isn't even fully conscious of anymore but isn't going to let go of without a fight. Maybe that accounts for some of the extreme defensiveness that I sometimes see in smokers -- who deny that smoking is even harmful.

I thought it was only nutty old me! So, there must be something that causes ex-smokers to be super sensitive to smoke after they quit. I smoked from age 14 to 22 and then quit. I have never smoked since. But I have a nose like a bird dog for a quail when it comes to cigarette or cigar smoke (most pipes don't bother me much, but then one rarely sees a pipe smoker anymore). When we were in Maine living in a dorm apt, I was constantly yelling to my husband that the boys were smoking upstairs - I could smell it in the dead of winter with the windows all closed and no forced air - baseboard heat. He'd go upstairs and catch them. They were all SO glad when I went home in late March! My beloved yard man is a smoker and he reeks of it. I'd have him do more indoor work for me but I can't stand the smell. He polishes my silver but I have him do it in the basement wash tubs (easier anyway). I offered him $500 if he quit for a year, but he just can't. He's a black man of 50 whose father died in his 60's of heart disease, and as a black man and a smoker he knows he's at greater risk of prostate cancer and knows my husband (a non-smoker) died from it. But he's hooked and so is his wife. What an incredible waste of money and a major health risk.

If they iron out the bugs, I will stay. I think this forum is a little more "intimate" to use an expression, although I do belong to NGA and will always post there, too. Debra, thanks about the NOID. I think it might be the one you think it is. I looked it up on the NGA database and there are a number of pictures for comparison, does look very similar, the colors are softer than Free Wheelin'. Maryl, here's another picture for you of Christmas In Oz, there were two blooms.Christmas In Oz BTW, Maryl, about Beautifully Embossed. It arrived late September last year, and it is planted in shade, so that may be the reason it's kind of puny. Only two scapes and the bud count was five and six on the respective scapes. We'll see how it shakes out over time. How about a few more pictures since I know these shouldn't disappear: Yazoo Elise Hintson--doing so much better since being moved last fall. This flower is huge. Pink Super Spider--this plant isn't doing as well as expected. I think after it blooms out, we will dig it up and replace soil and replant to see if that will make a difference. Susan Weber-FFO WB So Blue Without Teresa--great blue on the eye. Strawberry Candy--FFO Childish Dream Kirsten's Corsage--new, but this is the third flower, way better than the first two. That's terrific, you should be very proud. Quitting that habit was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. It's also one of the most difficult things to do.

That is awesome!! Go out and buy yourself a reward for that great job. I have never smoked but I know what a horrible time my husband has had with quitting.

Believe it or not, It wasn't hard!! I got up, lit a cigarette, decided to quit, put it out and I was done!!

Congrats on a great job, well done, CB ... so far.

It looks as though you haven't been chewing your fingernails down to bleeding over it - which is something to be thankful for. Some find it helpful to put a carrot stick, celery stick ... even a toothpick ... into their mouth when they had smoked as part of their routine, earlier.

Possibly check out www.quitnet.org (or try " .com" if that doesn't work), as quite a few have found advice and support from fellow campaigners, there - credited it with a good portion of their success.

Figure out what it used to cost for the smoking, and build a separate savings stash of that amount, take out a bit to reward yourself for your success, from time to time. If you can find the ready cash to start that fund off with the 6-months worth of savings already achieved - so much the better! Or put that six months' worth of value achieved in the fund, from time to time, as you go along.

That fund'll add to your incentive.

And learn how to manage money skilfully, then put that wisdom to good use in managing that stash ...

... to add some extra funds to enjoy your prolonged retirement, increasedly healthy, allowing you to get involved in a number of enjoyable activities that your quite likely more decrepit body would likely have disallowed, had you continued to smoke.

Have you had tour pooch checked for yeast?? I have a dog that is allergic to the yeast that her skin manufactures,, ,and so is on Ketokonizole and prednisone....and special shampoo... Might e worth looking into....

KayJones.....seriously, I just decided to quit. Kind of a spur of the minute decision......with a lit cigarette in my hand 1/2 smoked! I put it out and said "I'm done" and haven't looked back!

Congratulations, CB!! You must be busting with pride--I know I would be!

About your dog's itchiness-- my dd's dog gets super itchy if he eats chicken or turkey, and possibly fish. She also buys no-grain food. I poo-pooed it until I saw the difference for myself. Sometimes I think we should all just feed our dogs (mostly) healthy leftovers from our dinners, as folks used to do.
