Warning Great Value(Walmart)Donut Sticks

Just an FYI!

Sat down with a donut stick yesterday with my cup of coffee. I cut them into four pieces....ate one piece and took the last bite out of the second piece and WOW there was something hard in it! It was a piece of GLASS! The package is the new red color, not white. The UPC on the box is 7874214757, with a use by date of 06/21/13. I called the customer service number right away, gave them all of the information and now am waiting to hear back from them.

Thanks for the for the warning...I don't buy those but do buy a lot of the Great Value products.....

Ok, the Honda GCV1600 started easily... I can't say I notice any difference over my older B&S, but I was surprised because it started on the first pull (well maybe I gave it a couple of short soft pulls to recheck the oil..another point, later). The choke is interesting, it is a manual pull to set, then when one closes the autokill bail the choke start to move to off, thus one needs to be ready to pull the rope as soon as they close the bail. The engine is also rated at "2", on a scale of 10 (10 is bad) cleanliness. So I can feel better about producing less pollution when mowing with it. Something to "feel" good about. On the oil, the manual is silent on the capacity, but the machine came with the usual short quart, I think it maybe be 1.5 pints. The suggestion is put it all in, and I'm sure many/most do. However, on putting about 3/4th of it in and checking the dip stick, I see it is full. Remains at the full mark after running for a few minutes. Of course, one is cautioned not to overfill, it is a splash lub engine. It seems like a serious error on my part or theirs, when they ship a special size oil container it should be the size needed to fill the oil tank, this protects the consumer from overfilling while guaranteeing, at least this one time, that the oil tank is full. Admittedly, it is hard to see clean oil on the plastic narrow cone shaped dip stick, but I can see it is wet to the full mark with less than the full container put in the tank. If the Honda is as good as my past B&S engines it will last until I don't need a mower any more. At my age I figure within the next 5-10 years I'm going to have to move off of the big property and take up a easier life stile in a Condo of other everything is done for you environment.

I'm with the pot pullers. I've bought these rescue den's from BBStores and many times found them so **tightly** packed in sphag that either no water can get in there, or they are completely water logged. To wet to long = den = rot. I've had root rot move into the base of the plant and into the canes. After this happens - it's over. Lesson learned the hard way. I like a fresh start for these poor things. So, when new growths put out of flush of new roots they have clean medium to grow into instead of the often soured mess they come potted/packed in. My experience is that den's love water, BUT, they like to dry between watering and a more open mix suits them better. I use straight lava rock for most of my den's, (phal type) but I am in Florida and the humidity is higher here. Calvin has a very good point also. It's anybody's guess what else may be in that pot! As Brooke was saying, I give all of these rescue babies a bath in soap and water and repot if it still has a few good roots. If it has *no roots* I stand them up in an empty clay pot, wet the pot once a day *maybe*, and wait for new growth and roots to pot it up. The waiting and the leaving it alone is the hardest part..lol. Bright light is key to restarting den's. Good luck!! Pat.....

My son works in a small chain grocery store stocking shelves at night, part time. He's definitely not making a living wage, and the "insurance" is a joke. We told him to decline the "insurance" and we put him back on ours via COBRA. It's a hefty chunk of change for us, but he needs good coverage due to eye issues and there's no way he could afford good coverage on his own, given his hours & wages. Frankly, I'd rather he work at Walmart -- better opportunity for advancement, a chance to learn corporate organization & managerial skills. eta: Not sure what the big controversy is here. If you don't like Walmart's policies or their merchandise and if you can afford to shop elsewhere, then there are other options. If you go that route, that's great. But for those who need to watch every penny and find the merchandise satisfactory, it's good there are Walmarts. We're fortunate to have variety and choices in this country. I quit buying plants at Walmart, they are root bound ALWAYS and overpriced. I love to grow a great deal of my plants now from seed - it's fun and it takes away some of the dreariness of late winter - life begins right in front of your eyes. I hope some of you will do a little research and try it, just annuals to start. It's a LOT of fun and very rewarding and very cheap to do. I don't do a lot, just a few flats - love it. There were a couple of sad looking plants at Walmart priced at full price. I asked to see the manager, showed her how root bound they were and how they were dying. I told her that if she would let me have them for 1/4 the price, I would take the chance and try to get them to survive. She told me it was against the corp policies of Wal Mart to do this, I was so surprised! I know those plants were going to be thrown away. I guess they make a better profit to keep the prices up there, they must sell enough even if the plant is dying - rather than to drastically reduce the plant to get rid of it. Then, they just throw away the dead ones. It seems so sad and wasteful to me anyway.

You should take a photo of it for proof. It happened to me in a soda shop, I ordered a hot fudge sundae and took a spoonful of ice cream and there was a chunk of glass from a coke bottle, split my tongue.

I did get a phone call this morning from where the donut sticks are made. They want me to pack everything up and send it to them. The lady that I spoke with said that there is no glass in their plant, and did I want a Great Value Gift Package? Ah No Thank You!

Donuts with a shelf life of more than a month??? I don't think so.... glass or not. Yuck.

Don't mess around with the store and their corporate molasses. If they have not contacted you soon, it means they are sitting on it or waiting for an answer from headquarters. Meanwhile, a dangerous product may or may not be on the shelves.

Contact the FDA (Food and Drug Adminstration) and your state's consumer protection agency.

I doubt it was made by WalMart......even if it wears the walmart brand..I would bet that it was made by the same company that made the brand name sitting next to it one the shelf...

As little as I like Walmart, to be fair, Walmart doesn't make any products that I can think of, they only sell them and outsource any of their "Great Value" branded items to independent contractors. I don't know for sure who would make the donut sticks but I'd venture a guess that it's Little Debbie. About the only thing Walmart makes that I can think of is diehard fans and adamant enemies.

I'd not only photograph it but I'd have an independent witness photograph it and also use video to get a close-up view of it. The closer you can get the better. Once you ship the stuff to them, you'll never get it back, even with a subpoena it'll likely disappear and records will often get misplaced. So document it while you can.

I assume you weren't injured so it is more of a "distasteful" thing rather than injury. Probably not worth having an independent lab evaluation. I would probably contact the FDA though and see what they say. It's something that happens. Things get into the works and instead of rat hairs you got a piece of something. Sometimes we don't want to know what's in our food!

Snack cakes can often run a 30-45 day shelf life. Seems like Twinkies had about the half-life of uranium. I chuckled about the donuts Walmart sells in the bakery section that would come out of the freezer, then they put the use by of probably 6 weeks out. And they were in the plastic snap type deli container! You can feel what little rocks they were. That was disgusting. At least the snack cake things are wrapped in plastic so they're not exposed to air (and dirt and people helping themselves...).

I found a bug in a can of peaches years ago (well known brand) I wrapped it up and sent it to the company I RECEIVED A NICE NOTE FROM THEM TELLING ME THEY ANALYZED IT AND IT WAS A HONEY BE AND SOMETIMES THEY DO FLY INTO THE PROCESSING PLANT OF COURSE THE SENT LOTS OF COUPONS THIS WAS YEARS BEFORE THE INTERNET OR EMAILS.

BUT GLASS??
