I used to have one. But for the life of me I can't remember the name of it. I would change the dirt if it's rock hard. The water won't absorb properly and the dirt probably lost most if not all of it nutrients.

Nice plant! I've had a couple, one with the maroon edges and one with the white. It's a Dracaena marginata I think. Water every 10 days or so? Depending on when it dries out. I'd water and then check the soil with my finger to see if it was still damp down in the pot. They can be surprisingly damn down there when the top of the soil looks dry. They dont care for a lot of fertilizer I think? If you put it outside it will love it. But only filtered sun, I used to put mine on the deck where it got only morning sun. You will find lots of infro on Google now you know the name.

Yes I would sure repot and try to remove all that old dead dirt. Putting a little nutrient supplement in the new potting soil would probably give it a nice boost.

I think I have one. Came to killing it several times until I threw it in the corner of my yard. Now it's flourishing without any intervention from me (thank goodness).

I don't know the name but I had one, years ago. Maybe Dracena or Schleffera (sp?) i used to put it outside in part-sun part shade in the summer, and it did fine as long as there was rain or i watered it. Brought it inside one winter, failed to water it enough, and it died indoors. My bad.

If you cannot repot it right now, submerge the pot in a sink or pail of water for an hour or so in order to rehydrate the root ball. My guess is that it is too dry through and through. Then avoid letting it dry out again, but don't over water it either. I would not fertilize it until it has had a while to acclimitize to its new home and moist roots.

Yes, I agree it's a Dracena........very easy to grow, doesn't like wet feet...

Dracena is a warm weather plant used to a semi-tropical environment. It likes a moderate amount of sunlight and moist soil but not drenched. Temperatures should be warm. If the plant is cut back it will develop new shoots. Most varieties do not need to be repotted.

The pot doesn't look to small to me. If I were you, I'd just lift the plant out of the pot. check to see if it is root bound, (a big wad of roots on the bottom.) If it's not, break some of the dirt off the bottom, sides and top and put some fresh dirt in the bottom of the pot and try to work some in around the sides and on top. The plant looks pretty healthy though and sometimes plants just prefer not to be disturbed. Again if it were me, I'd do as little as possible and give it a little fertilizer and see what happens.

Thanks everyone! The pot it's in is actually pretty big. I'm not sure about the soil...but it looks and feels just like regular yard dirt! If it's a potting soil, it's the hardest potting soil I've ever seen.
