Sun, Sand and Smiles.

Things looked doubtful, but Mother Nature pulled through providing a fabulous holiday weekend for the beach. We definitely have a place others are envious of, the crowds so happy to be out under bright blue skies getting sand in the toes. This is more like it, and hope it gets hot for the rest of the summer and a long 'vacation'. Sure makes that beer taste good. I'll take any beach, but am admittedly spoiled by the fresh water of Lake Michigan. Hope your holiday weekend is providing ample enjoyment.

No beach time for me, lots of work in the yard. Still planting veggies; and deciding which plants won't make it as a result of the rotten winter weather. Lots of rain predicted in a couple of days - then I get two naps a day!

That looks just great--I'm glad the sun finally decided to shine on your area, OF! How are you feeling lately? I hope you are getting very good care.

I am refering to Belize which is quite far south of Bermuda, the Bahamas, and FL. While Belize does have a spectacular tropical jungle interior, we are on a sandy peninsula. The rainy season starts in June and ends mid February. It can get quite dry throughout the spring months. We have friends there who are very enthusiastic gardeners, so hope some watering will be done while we are away. Thanks for the great tip about 'Perle d'Or' as I have one languishing here in zone 6.

Depends on how sunny it is, how fast the underlying material drains and how frequently you need/wish to water. Both Irish and Scotch mosses like rich soil and plenty of water. Thyme likes it hot, lean and on the dry side. I am not very familiar with sun tolerant mosses although I'd suspect they'd be both hard to find and moisture lovers. Weeds will grow up through anything - you just need to be prepared to weed from time to time to keep things tidy. If using only the permeable sand then much easier to use some sort of herbicide to keep weeds in check.

Thanks. We live on Grand Traverse Bay off Lake Mi, so it's a fresh water beach. I have not actually planted the grasses yet. They're still in the containers setting out by the steps. Yes, rain is the only cause of erosion. The area is on a slight decline so a hard rain tends to wash out the sand around the steps. There is a small amount of moisture there because of some irrigation in the lawn, but it's fairly dry overall. Thanks for helping me clarify.

OG's will do great in your space. Chances are, there's no salt in your soil, as salt is highly soluble, and would be washed out by rain. Salt air is another thing entirely, and I've found that most plants tolerate it just fine. I live beside a saltwater canal, and grow all sorts of grasses and other perennials with no problem.

That's wonderful, OF. I miss the days when I lived on the beach (Harbor Island, SC). I would come home from work, change into my bathing suit, and step out on the boardwalk to the beach. Most times, there would only be a tiny handful of people kut there....just me and all of the birds.

Oldfixer where do you live? Yesterday another Legion auxillary member and I put flags and wreaths on the graves of the Veretans here in our little town. About 4 hours later it started raining It rained so hard that the water was running down the street. I think it rained like that for about an hour. There even was a little bit of small hail with it. I went out and looked at them this morning. There isn't much left of the wreaths that had the red crepe paper poppies on them now. Tonight we will go out to pick them up again. I am pretty sure next year they will all have be remade. Now it is thundering again so I am sure we are in for some more rain. We really needed it though here in SD

That's the Indiana shoreline of Lake Michigan. When the beach calls, chores have to be done between 5-7am. No time to be spent napping. This summer looks to be a major test with the new cancer, hoping to maintain a normal routine. Passed the Caribbean beach test, and lab results actually improved. So initiate a trial, and see if more beach continues to be beneficial. Tough job, but somebody has to do it. No problem, I am solar powered.
