Has Anyone Else been Preparing Food All Day?

I have not worked at it all day, but it sure seems like I have. I also had Alyssa here till a bit ago. Cheryl was here with her so they did things together. She helped wrap Easter gifts for baby Alex. The sun has been out all day but a bit on the cool side with a breeze. Hope all have a Happy Easter.

Not really, I made sauce for lasagna tomorrow, decided to do something different, Will also make a cake, that's about it!

Nope! Been at the state baseball playoffs in another town.

Got both woodstove going full tilt this morning and I hope to do at least a couple of winter sowing containers but I'll be putting them in our 5C beasement until the temps warm-up outside. From 18C inside the house to -20C outside is too much of a hit for even a sleepy seed eh? I brought in some Asclepias Curassavicas from my gardens in the fall. Six small plants in total. Just wanted to see if I could overwinter them in the house. Until about 2 weeks ago they were in our cool basement, but then I decided to bring them upstairs and place them on a windowsill after repotting in good new soil. One of them, the most mature, is bursting out with new leaves from the old stem, but the others are all just staying put. They were all smaller plants. Our season isn't hot enough for them to flower from seed the first year, so thought I'd try it. I have no houseplants so it's nice to have something inside the house. :O)

> They are awful -- the light they give off is hideous. You must be buying the cheap ones. Good quality CFs are essentially indistinguishable from incandescents when installed in fixtures where the bulb is behind a shade or diffuser. I have asked guests to tell me which of my table lamps has an incandescent and which has a CF. Most can't tell the difference, and the others guess wrong about as often as they guess right. CF lifespan is an average. If the rated life is 6 years, some will fail in 1 month, some 6 months, some 3 years, some 9 years, some 12 years ... you get the idea. The fact that one or two you put in failed early is mostly likely just your bad luck. I probably got the ones that balance out yours, because I've have very few premature failures. :-) You can't really tell whether the brand is reaching its lifespan claims until you've bought and used a few dozen. To find out what's really going on, mark the installation date on the base. Keep records. Don't just get upset and give up because a couple of them failed early. Also consider how you use the CF. If you turn the light on and off more than 2 or 3 times a day, that shortens its lifespan. If you fit it into a fixture that traps heat in the bulb's electronic base, because the bulb is enclosed by a shade and/or is upside down, that shortens its lifespan. So don't do those things if you can avoid them. Try to install the CF in an open fixture, with the base to the side or bottom. LEDs sold for home use are still less efficient than CFs (lumens per watt) and cost much more. Be warned that there is a fair bit of fudging going on with manufacturer's claims of incandescent equivalence, just as there was in the early days of CFs. I've seen LED retrofits claim equivalence to 40 or 60 watt incandescents - but when I checked the actual lumen output buried in the spec sheet, it was closer to 15 or 25 watt incandescents' lumen output. Caveat emptor. Someday LEDs will no doubt be better than CFs and may even be cheaper. But they are not yet ready for prime time. They may nevertheless be good for commercial situations where replacement is by highly-paid workers. There the longer life makes a real difference. LEDs also excel right now for extremely dim lights, such as night lights, where both fluorescent and incandescent lights have relatively poor efficiency. Bottom line on CFs: anybody can cite specific cases where one or two specific CFs didn't save him money. That's interesting information, but not very helpful in making a yea or nay decision. On average, when you consider the reduction in electricity use, CFs are almost always a winner.

We will be having a family reunion at DDs on July 3rd. Younger son is flying in from the East Coast, older son will have just arrived home from an 8 week tour of USA with his girlfriend, and hopefully my brother and sister and spouses will join us. Last year when our youngest came home for a visit in June, we did a May birthdays party without gifts at DDs. My brother and 2 sons celebrate in May. Now our DD has moved our 3 1/2 year old grandson's birthday from December 25th to June 25th, but this year he will be visiting his other grandparents then. So we will do a big May and grandson birthday bash in early July. I am, therefore, taking note of your menu plans. I think we will buy 12 Costco steaks and have SIL grill them, and then I will bake a zucchini cake iced with Philadelphia Cream Cheese icing, and make a vat of potato salad and some meaty baked beans too. My sister can make a salad, DD can buy some ice cream, and I will pick up some other snacks at Costco when we go such as nice berries or chips or cheese and crackers. My brother hosts his wife's family on the 4th in their backyard, and I want to spare her any cooking for our gathering the evening before theirs.

Two things come immediately to mind, but they weren't really ugly at all?? Dad was a big fan of early TV cooking shows, when they were on public TV... Julia, Graham K, Frugal Gourmet, etc. One time he decided "we" would make won-ton soup from scratch. The broth came out very nice. Won-ton noodles looked great but were so TOUGH you could barely chew them. What I thought was rolled thin enough... well, it wasn't. Another time he decide "we" would make Beef Wellington... BIG $$$ hunka tenderloin. Hauled out a cookbook for a recipe for the pastry dough to wrap beef in. It looked MAAHVELOUS going into oven and even better coming out... if I do say so myself. Well, you LITERALLY could not cut through the crust. We pretty much had to break up and pry off the crust. Luckily, that expensive hunka meat was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was eaten without any crust on it.

Started yesterday, and have been at it much of the day. Trying to clean up as I go so we can find the kitchen when we need it. Still have a long way to go, but am giving myself a break.

There will be only three of us, so not much to do. I did make a lemon tart though--the ATK recipe is simple and delicious! Wish we had some little ones around.... Happy Easter, to all!

Nope. I did the grocery shopping yesterday. I'll do some prep tonight, but all the cooking will be tomorrow.

The only food prep I did today was cutting up the fruit for a big fruit salad. And the only reason I did that today was to make room in the refrigerator- whole pineapples, melons, cantaloupe and half a watermelon take up too much space.

But then I'm not serving dinner tomorrow. The kids called and we decided on having brunch instead. That way they can bring their dogs for a nice romp in the backyard.

Yep, there will be 15 here for dinner tonight. They'll begin to arrive in about an hour.(5:00 west coast time). Should be fun and everything is ready. Just have to turn on the oven and stick everything in.

Cleaned and grocery shopped yesterday. Put together two casseroles today. Tomorrow...last minute touch up cleaning, set the table, get out serving dishes. No real cooking tomorrow, just glazing the carrots. Everything else is shove in the oven and microwaving frozen veggies. Easy appetizers... Chips, salsa, hummus, cheese, crackers, fruit. Having 9 so quite manageable. Happy Easter to all!

Nope, been working the last two days. Just got home, picked up KFC cole slaw for Easter dinner at work tomorrow.

Nope, we decided we will probably go out to dinner tomorrow night or just grill steaks. Just the two of us so not a big difference. I did fix some ham today for brunch.

I got up this morning and raked the lawn and cleaned all of that up.It was still covered with twigs and pine cones from the winter. Then I spread some mulch. I also talked with every neighbor that went by. I was getting a little crazy from all the talking!

Tonight I washed and broke up lettuce for a salad, baked the shortcake for dessert, washed a cut up the brussels sprouts to be roasted, cooked some bacon for the salad and chopped up the bread for pineapple casserole. I hope all of this makes things less hectic tomorrow.

I also got out the good dishes and silver and the serving dishes. Oh yes, and put the tablecloth on the table.

Thank heavens the house is clean because i had book club here on Thursday.

Now I am going to put as much as possible in the dishwasher, turn it on and go to bed. I am beat.

Feeling two different sides of Easter dinner this year.... While I was fixing the last preps for our family Christmas dinner, my back stabbing pain took me to my knees. Short story to a long story... Taken to ER, then to back surgery, nerves in several areas were clamped off...spent 3 weeks in hospital and rehab...brought home, with home care, still on walker and a lot of pain.....So, I thought my kids were going to their in-laws for the day, so it would be another ordinary day for me...then I got a call from my DDs asking if they could bring dinner....golly, how nice is that? The only thing they want me to do is furnish the house...and brew the tea.

Got to love my kids with all my heart. Happy Easter to all of you!

I made the Jello mold today, and DIL is making the dessert. Otherwise, it all happens tomorrow. We will eat at dinner time, so I can bake the ham and au gratin potatoes and cornbread quite easily in the afternoon. I will send the grandsons back to their mother tomorrow afternoon when they return from Napa, and grandpa can drive them half way for the hand off. (The Easter bunny is coming here.) They meet at a McDonald's, and the boys eat lunch there. Makes it easy for DD. I will be busy in the kitchen preparing for our 6pm dinner.

Not all day, but much of the day. Mom will have the ham and homemade rolls and I think she made a fruit salad. I am taking twice-baked potatoes, spinach Madeline, Glenda's pineapple casserole, marinated asparagus and basil/bacon deviled eggs. Someone else in bring dessert. I thought about something with carrots, but couldn't take another trip to the store. We'll have plenty without them.

Our oldest guest, a dear family friend, just turned 96 a few weeks ago. We all adore him. He has been failing in recent months and we're trilled that he wants to come.

I am hosting a brunch for 15, so I put together the egg bakes to be cooked in the AM. I made blueberry muffins, banana muffins and raspberry scones. Fruit is cut up for salad. I will bake the bacon and make waffles when everyone starts arriving. I will take a much needed nap tomorrow afternoon :)

yes to spending most of Saturday preparing food here and naturally it was the only sunny day we've had in a while. My mother is hosting easter dinner -- meaning she'll bake a ham and make au gratin potatoes and I'll do all the rest.... the pierogies take the most time. :p I still have to make some bread and applesauce this morning, so might as well get to it!
