Rainy Day and Bad News

It's bad enough it has been pouring all day but just a few minutes ago we got a call from a theater friend who we only hear from at Christmas. Somehow I knew it would be bad news and it was.

Another very close theater friend has just been diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer. George and I were absolutely speechless when she informed us about our other friends diagnosis. Liz had asked Nancy to call us right away as "we're very special to her" but she's exhausted right now.

I'm sitting here in tears while writing this. She was so looking forward to our 1st/35th anniversary celebration in October and now it looks like she won't be there. I know she will be in spirit and she was at our civil union ceremony.

For me in inland San Diego county Carding Mill has been superlative. It bloomed constantly during the hottest weather of summer and has only a short time ago stopped blooming. Even the leaves stayed green when most roses were roasting, and it's planted in full sun. If you like apricot roses you'll love this one. I'm not really an apricot fan but would never get rid of this rose because it's such a workhorse and so easy to care for. No disease for me but I don't have disease issues with roses in general here. I don't think you can go wrong with this rose. It bloomed more constantly than any other rose in my garden of 84 roses, in spite of being a young plant. It also isn't gawky and doesn't have octopus arms like some other Austins; it's a nice bushy shrub with upright flowers. Ingrid

All good hostas, and they sure are big! Here's Mourning Dove from last year. It's fairly new so not mature, but I love the blue coloring with the lighter edge. Please, overlook the hard water spots.

Must be the day for car troubles. I'd taken off this morning for the country house--planning to stay until at least Sunday to get some 'stuff' done there. Got a call from DH at 4:30,, "My truck seems to have lost all it's coolant, so I had to take it to the service station." So I hopped in the car and drove an hour through rush hour traffic to get home so I can take him to work tomorrow morning. Hopefully, the truck won't take long to repair, and we'll be back at the house mid-afternoon (DH is only working 1/2 days this week, since it's his first week back after his last operation. Hope your car troubles are quickly remedied. Enjoy the movie.

My favorite of these is the wonderful, colorful clump of Roman Cohort. Your beautiful photo reminds me that I've got to get my Roman Cohort moved so it can bloom like that again. My burning bushes have grown so much they are crowding Roman Cohort and several others and shading them too much. My second favorite is the Thin Man clump. Those large red blooms are striking in a group. I hope Blazing Saddles shapes up for you. The petals look like they're having trouble opening all the way. My Blazing Saddles replacement started blooming last week. Unfortunately most of the buds opened while I was out of town or on days I was attending professional development sessions and unable to photograph. Debra

Oh my how very sad. Try to keep her smiling. Cute funny cards, email and letters. I lost a dear friend to throat cancer and I made a point to keep up a steady stream of fun stuff to her and she was so appreciative. She had them surrounding her bed.
I have been bringing those stuffed animals that sing and dance to my mom in the home she is in. They make her laugh out loud. It is a wonderful sound and her sweet smile is priceless.

I will pray for no pain for your friend.

There is a book that I bought when a dear friend was suffering from the same situation. It is called "Help Me Live", and was invaluable to me. It helped me to know what I could do to help her through the cancer. Simple but meaningful things - to my friend and to me. You might find it useful.

Sorry to hear of your friend's troubles ... and the heartache that it brings to you.

Good wishes to her, and to you, and to the others who love her.

Offering some prayers for her, and for those who love her and are called upon to minister to her and to themselves and to one another through the difficult days ahead. May this part of her life-journey be as pain-free and non-disconcerting as possible.
