You hear stories about this. But I always had a hard time

believing it. But my nephew got married last year, they have

3 children, 5, 3 and 18 months old. He made $18,000

last year and got an $18,000 refund. wow. he has no

desire to find any other kind of work (logger), no desire

to move up in the company, this just keeps people on the

welfare rolls I guess. The kids teeth are already full

of fillings, I mean FULL... nephews wife has been giving

then soda and coffee since they could hold their little

sippy cups. I mentioned how that wasn't good for the

kids and their teeth, and her retort was "well, it didn't

hurt me and we don't have to pay for the dentist!" My

brother in law's step son doesn't seem to care either.

anywhoooooo. this isn't about the kids nutrition (I tried!

the were here from Idaho for 5 days last week) but

how do you get a tax refund equal to the amount of $$$ you

made. I would sure like to do that! lol

I know 51% of the people don't pay income taxes, but I

really didn't realize that they got THAT much back.

I was stunned

Well, I know from listening to the Dave Ramsey show that they qualify for living below the poverty level. Maybe that had something to do with it.

We have Vannie and Kelly beat.We will be giving the IRS $18,000.! See what I mean about almost enough to buy a new car? LOL Talk about Ouch! All because we were fortunate enough to inherit oil property from in-laws in 81 and were even more fortunate to be able to sell last year at a very good price.We have paid an average of $3000. every year since in taxes on the oil royalties on 2 producing wells,plus about $1200. a year in property taxes.I think it is a little unfair to have to pay 18% taxes on that one time windfall but that's the way it is.So much for being one of those "rich" Texas oil people! LOL

Carolyn .. I am in Arlington, Tx We are still negotiating, but I think I am about to walk and look elsewhere. I discovered that the supposed recent comps sent to me by the broker actually had much older deed dates. Out of the 26 I based my offer on, only 5 were sold in 2006..some of the others were as old as 2001. I reevaluated my offer, due to the comp price average being much higer based on the 5 that sold in 2006. I countered with $74,000 with me still paying my closing costs. The declined it and stayed firm on 78,000 with me paying my closing costs. I researched it further, checked out homes in the area that were listed within a $3,000 higher or lower range and found that they didn't meet or exceed the quality of the one I am looking at buying. I found out about an available grant to 1st time home buyers and being as keeping my monthly payment in my affordable range is the most important thing for me..I checked into it. It turns out that I meet the criteria so, based on that I made the decision to go with their asking price of $78,000 with the contingency that the house pass the inspection arranged by the agency issuing the grant. The grant money, which I would use as a down payment would keep my paments where I need them to be. I went to a 6 hour class yesterday that is required for the grant and they had a real estate broker, mortgage lender, insurance representative and an inpector for the Texas Real Estate Commission conducting workshops. It was really informative and I asked the inspector if the house being older and not having the electrical outlets grounded would cause it to fail inspection. (the inspection for the the grant is different than a standard inpection..in this one it passes or fails and no grant if it fails) He told me it wouldn't be a problem, but that they could not have 3 prong outlets installed if it wasnt grounded. Basically, can't appear to be grounded when it isn't. Well .. it has 3 prong outlets and when I told the real estate broker, he said "that's the problem they had with the last attempted sale .. same thing caused it to not pass FHA code" Now I know the reason that they insisted on only accepting a conventional loan offer from me and based on all they have said, I find it highly doubtful that they will switch out the outlets plates to make the sale. Although there would be a little rewiring involved ... from what I was told, it is a matter of just 2 wires per outlet and very simple and inexpensive to do. I checked with an electrician, then called the real estate broker and told him I would pay for it to be done. It was less than $200.00 and was worth it to me. I meet with the broker this afternoon to finalize the contract at their asking price .. with the contingency of the inspection for the grant added and my offer to pay for the electrical switch. He says they are firm on not changing it, based on what they told him about the last experience with this, but said he will present it to them. If they decline .. I give lol .. it will be time to move on. Hopefully, I will know something this evening or tomorrow.

I work in this area and for years have enjoyed lunchtime walks past the big stone houses. They are right on the edge of the city, or actually in it, and you would find the lots surprsingly small. Many are quite near the road and the sidewalk almost goes past the front door, well much closer than houses in the burbs. It amazes me that many do not have garages, and actually park on the street. Often think what I would do to each one, and which ones I would want to live in! :) A new sale sign always has to be investigated to see if it's a nice inside as I imagine. Some are, and some are surprising un-updated (like with an 80's kitchen or something). I do have to say that some of them look more like private schools than 'homes' too. Pal - almost bought you a book the other weekend. If I knew how to get it to you... Was in an antiques Mall up in Allentown and there was this huge old book propped up on an easel..."Pal's Cabin". :D

I had no doubt Elmer would chime in in defense of the large corporations, and offer advice like: rather than complain about the corporations efforts to avoid paying the taxes they are legally obligated to, instead you should buy stock in the company so that you can benefit from the dribs and drabs of ill-gotten-gains that spills forth from their over-full pockets. I wasn't talking about moving manufacturing operations to third-world locations like China or Mexico or Alabama, where the responsibility of manufacturers to their workers amounts to: "Too bad, so sad, enjoy your cancer." or "Sorry about your missing limb, I hope that grows back" I was talking about schemes where the companies declare their "headquarters" to be a mail drop in a strip mall in Ireland, and then create fictitious subsidiaries in Ireland, The Netherlands, The Bahamas and/or Singapore and exploit dubious loopholes with clever names like: Double Irish with a Dutch Sandwich, Bermuda Black Hole, or Singapore Sling. These schemes to avoid paying taxes are not illegal only because the companies exploiting them have a cadre of accountants, lawyers and lobbyists working tirelessly to prevent the government from closing the loophole and making them illegal. And they are only "not nefarious" by a situational morality ruler of "All of those others are doing it too, therefore it is not morally/ethically wrong." Using these Google paid a tax rate of 2.4% in 2009 on 5.5 billion euros in profit, while in a different year Apple paid approximately 1% in taxes using such schemes. Some half-assed efforts have been made to address these abuses, but rather than declaring that their use of these loopholes was illegal all along and demanding the companies pay the taxes they would have owed, plus penalties, like I would have to do if I engaged in tax fraud, instead the governments have said what you've done is wrong, but the punishment for doing so is nothing, and we'll give you until 2020 to continue this particular tax fraud while you look for new loopholes you can exploit to continue to avoid paying taxes. If you are saying that you helped companies exploit these dubious tax avoidance schemes then you are part of the problem, and in my mind you are no less criminal than the companies that have done so.

I figured out a very long time ago that a lot, not all, people that live this way have no desire to do any better for themselves. Why should they, they get all the free lunches, health care, food stamps and on and on.. Now they get free money from all of us, too. Until the government decides to stop all of this it will never change. Now the government wants to take from the ones that have worked hard all their lives to make things even for all. This is not right. Do you want to make a hundred bucks and give someone that doesn't want to work fifty of it to make things fair because they are content living this way?

I know some do need help and I don't mind helping them but it's the ones that just sit back and take that could do better that I am upset with.

Sorry to say, your family member is one of those that have decided to take. Just what do you suppose they will do with the $18,000 return? I bet it isn't what we would choose to do with it.. Sad, but true.

Let's not forget - these guys are pikers when compared with the Wall Street bankers, and other huge companies, who did your government for huge amounts.

Are many of the corporations so poor that they can't get by without major government largesse?

Also, there was a story on either the news or a news type program about a family receiving a $54,000 tax refund. It had to do with a special credit for each adopted child and they had several children they had adopted.

if i'm reading the tax table correctly...

personal standard deductions are $3400 per person...and the tax on 18,000 tax table is 1866 (filing jointly) guess it can be done...

I've heard of getting back more than you paid in income tax.... like paid $3000 & got back a refund of $3500, because of "Making Work Pay" and "Earned Income Credit". But color me skeptical that you could get a refund of $18 K on an income of the same amount.

I agree, you shouldn't feel sorry Kat. You mainly posted it to vent out your disapproval of your nephew worthlessness.

Funny how life and people are. I've been disabled all my life and all my life I refused to do what your nephew is doing. I worked hard because I enjoyed spending my own money rather than the government's & the taxpayers'. I'm not one that likes to abuse the system.

Almost 2 years ago, my disability changed its course and forced me to quit working. I am now living on disability income. You just don't know how much I miss going to work and make my own money. When I had to apply, the social security agent could see how much I was in distressed. She tried to comfort me by stressing out that I've paid my dues all these working years. And, that I shouldn't feel bad now for living on SS Disability, that's what was there for.

I am not depressed but I feel empty and useless. I don't understand how anyone would enjoy or accept feeling this way.

A counselor had told me that it's usually how she has seen. The physical cabable ones don't want to work and just want to live on welfare; yet, the disabled ones try harder to be in among the working force.

The system is there to help the needy ones but there are so much abuse over it. It's very sadden indeed.

Don't feel bad about posting--you are just expressing your feelings and I know how you feel. I too would be curious if they really paid that much in. Have a great day and I am due to the fact that most of the snow is GONE, but the flooding is not good in some areas. The farmers will be about a month late getting into the fields and some may not make it at all.

Unbelievable how those tax credits work. Next year my husband will be 65 and I expect an extra exemption, we may get money back. but not anything like $18,000!! When I was a kid, we lived next door to a family who kept taking in foster children, mostly disabled. My mother said they did it to "make money", but I prefer to remember them as kind people.
