Make the first column flushed left and the second column flushed right.

Sue, sorry I didn't explain too well, but the entire line is in one column and I have it left aligned. I was thinking there was an option to make each line start and end at the same point so that it looks neat.

Try using "justify".

Try this: leave the text left aligned, but then insert a right-aligned tab at the far right side of the column. So, you'd type "President" then press tab, then type "John Doe", and it should make John Doe aligned at the right. When you press "enter" to go to the next line, it will carry the tab setting, so you don't have to set the tab for each line.

To set a right tab, click the little tab button at the left of the ruler bar until it looks like a backwards L. Then click on the ruler where you want the tab to be placed.

Linda, my DS just told me the same thing and I thought that would be the answer, but I still have a couple of lines that are not perfectly lined on the right. I'm doing something for a friend and she is a perfectionist. She will notice that they are not perfectly in line. *S*

It seems to me that the justify option should do it. I'll keep playing with it and thanks for your help.

If the text is complete sentences, not a list like your example, then justified text is the way to go, not tabs. If it's not lining up on the right side, make sure you aren't putting two spaces between the sentences (like we were all taught to do in typing class way back when). Word processing software, like Word, requires only one space after the period. Two spaces will make the text look a little jagged on the right side.

I'm also a perfectionist, that's how I know! :)

OK, to put ..... in between, set a tab leader. To do that:

go to Format, Tabs on the drop-down menus.
If your tab setting isn't already shown in the list, add it.
Under Leader, click the number 2 option, with the dots.
Click Set. Then click OK.

If you were typing in a series of periods, that's probably why it looks jagged on the right side. It's doing the same thing that a series of spaces would do. The tab setting and tab leader should make it look perfect. You can always email the document to me and I can format it for you.

Uxorial, I do that all the time when typing up the order of service on funeral programs. I align left (or justify) and then manually line it up at the end by lining up the hard returns. I was told there is a way to do it automatically, but I never tried it. Is what you're describing the way to do it? I'm thinking this is the same Maryanne is asking.

Bestlawn, Yes, using a right-aligned tab with a dotted leader is the best and easiest way to do it.

Kayjones--Here's how to make a column of text lined up at the left and right sides, with dots between the words (like shown above):

Type your first word
Click the tab setting button (way at the left of the ruler) until it looks like a backwards L.
Click on the ruler bar at the position you want the tab to be to line up the text at the right side. (The tab is set at 2 1/2" in my example above.)
Go to Format, Tabs on the drop-down menus.
You'll see the 2.5" tab shown in the list of tab stop positions at the left.
Under Leader, click the number 2 option, with the dots.
Click Set. Then click OK.

On your document, press the tab key. The cursor will move to the tab position and dots will appear in between. Type the word(s) you want in the right "column." The words will move to the left as you type, aligning the text at the right side where the tab is.

Press enter to type the next line. It will keep the same tab setting.

If the words on the right side are getting too close to the words on the left, highlight all the lines of text, then click on the tab in the ruler bar and slide it to the right to where you want it. (When you hover your mouse near it, it will pop up "Right Tab"; when you click on the tab setting, a dotted line will appear showing where the text will be aligned.) Or, go to Format, Tabs, and add the new tab setting, click the #2 dotted leader option, press set; highlight the old tab, press clear, press OK when done. (Sliding it on the ruler is faster.)
