Mouse not working on Toshiba laptop

First, I have a confession...I had a battery powered mouse that only worked about half of the time, after putting up with it for what seemed like forever, I threw it against the wall. (I do feel better now.)

Anyway, I can not seem to figure out why the mouse on the keyboard will not work unless I am in safe mode, which I am now. Anyone able to help?

My laptop had an "on & off" switch for the keypad. Perhaps your is in the off mode.

Does the mouse need new batteries? Is it wireless? If so, jiggle the little dohickey that goes in the side of laptop. You know -- the thingy.

For the touchpad try hitting FN+F9.

oliverp You might try an Update for your mouse. Start - control panel - open system icon - Hardware - Device manager - (if you can) left click the Plus sign in front of mice and other pointing devices - right click the name of your mouse - Click Update and follow directions. You will need the CD that came with your computer. Also try - Start - Run - Type - chkdsk /r - OK Don't forget the space between K / After you click on Y for yes and Type - exit - and press the Enter Key. You can now Restart your computer to begin chkdsk /r

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate that. So do I understand that apart from checking out the 'Wake on LAN' feature that is the way it is? If so I have no problem, it was just that at times when I am not at my computer and he calls 6 to 7 times then gives up I feel he may lose interest. That was when I would like to call him back so he does not get despondent. As he almost always calls between 10.10 and 10.20 every morning my time I had better start rising a little earlier to get a few chores done so I can be here regularly, ha ha. At least I have found and had him bookmark a couple of interesting live webcams including one on a Bald Eagle's nest where the chicks hatched a couple of days ago so perhaps he will go online more to check out the birds. Then I might be able to 'find' him and make contact. Hopefully those kind of sites might stick in his mind better so he can become more comfortable with and understand the simpler concepts of computing. Once we get there then the sky is the limit. Thanks again for the help.

It sounds like a "mechanical" problem, like some dirt or lint may be stuck under the pad. But check the "sensitivity" setting in case that's somehow been changed. Open Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, then Mouse...try changing the sensitivity setting there. Otherwise, you may need to open the pad to clean under it, and I'll leave it to more knowledgeable people to tell you how that's done!

I have 2 wireless mouses or um mice?? that I really like one is a GE and one is a Gear Head MP2000WU both are the smaller size notebook mouse which I much prefer they just fit and feel better in my hand than the big ones. The Gear Head has the suede feel rubber on the click part of the top and on the sides where you grip it. They both have the small usb receiver that is about the size of a thumb drive or smaller. The GE has a place that opens on the top that the receiver stores in which is nice. One takes AAA one takes AA batteries. I have tried wireless keyboards and no matter the brand I just did not like them, they go through batteries like crazy even the rechargables. GEAR HEAD MP2000WU Mine is all black but it is this one. the dongle for this one is a bit wide and in some cases can partly block the usb port beside it but it does come with a cord to use as an extension if you need it. GE 98792 that is what the GE one looks like, I use it daily it is my main mouse and I love it, nice and small easy to hold batteries last quite well and you can put the dongle inside under the black center part. I have had it and use it daily for a couple years I think, it has never had any problems. oh I just found my mouse in pink, for an excellent price too , it is usually listed around $30 ... I may need this pink one LOL Pink but I see it also comes in blue, mine is silver and black. I had bought a set with a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse but brought it back after a few days, it ate batteries and the keyboard had keys doing kkkkkksssssssss ooooooo etc all the time, Hated it. This one is also a great mouse my husband has it, it comes in handy since he does a lot of conferences and can use the built in laser pointer. It last forever on batteries. Has extra long range. Hmom I threw away the wireless mouse and am now using the the mouse on the keyboard, but the mouse does not work unless I am in safemode. The wireless is no long Ier an issue.

Ded I the FN+F9 and nothing happens.

I have run a full AV scan and have looked at the problemsolving/troubleshooting in the info section of my laptop, no help there.

This laptop is 7 years old.

All of my laptops have a key on the keyboard up on the top row that toggles the TouchPad off and on, you may have one too. I can accidentally hit it at times and cause the off / on problem.
Try Google for your laptop model number and toggle TouchPad off
Edit:
Just press FN+F5 and that should do it ! Or contrl F5

Please let us know if anything works, I am happy to look into other solutions.

I always use a cordless little mouse with my laptop I just don't like the TouchPad. I have several and all work extremely well so you might try another brand with better luck. I have bought a few at the Big Lots store.

Did you remove the part, that comes with the mouse, from the USB port?

... what with chewing holes in cookie boxes, building nests in kitchen cupboard drawers, and chewing edges or even middle parts of various papers ...

... is doing quite well, thank you very much!

He/they (surely not "she"s) spurn my traps, even the "Box Cat" ones that don't kill them (well - not right away, anyway).

So ... what am I to do - wait till their batter(ies) run down?

Well, it is not the toggling fn+f5, it has nothing to do with a wireless mouse.

I have run my AV, checked to see if there was a conflict with any other program, there is not.

Wen I start up regularly my mouse will not work, I can move the mouse around on the screen, but as far as clicking on anything, I can't.

My laptop is a Toshiba L655D, I have not downloaded anything new prior to the mouse not working. I did d/l a driver for the touchpad from Toshiba's support site.

The keyboard mouse/touchpad only works in SAFE MODE.

And, I had a wireless mouse, I had changed the battery, checked for drivers, etc. In an act of frustration I threw the wireless mouse against the wall, that was the end of the wireless mouse.

Any other ideas? Thanks for the offer Raven

Oh darn I had hoped that the control and f5 buttons together would do it since it worked for many other Toshiba owners.
I will do more sleuthing and see if I can find anything else.
