first thing I would do is go to that location in your C drive and see what is there so you have some idea of what C:\$Mfr contains.

Have you run an updated malwarebytes scan lately? if not I would do that just to rule out malware interference.

I would also go to belarc and run a free belarc on it, that will give you the hard drive health info so you know if you are showing any signs of the hard drive malfunctioning.

After those I would look at the even viewer and see if there are red flagged events. Do those first 2 then we can move on.

no problem, he should be able to look into what is in that location on the c drive it could be as simple as deleting that.
I am sure he will go to the administrative tools event viewer and check for red flags there should be some codes there indicating what is causing them.

Ivamae, are you getting Windows Updates regularly? If not you should. Next, are you running a firewall? If not or if you're using the Windows one, I'd suggest Comodo's Free version.

Also if you're using Opera, you have much better security, but if you're using a less secure browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer you need to take some extra precautions. Get SpywareBlaster and WinPatrol. Both are free and are excellent additional layers of protection for your system. Even though Opera is my primary browser I still use everything I've mentioned. I don't have many if any problems with my systems that I own or manage.

Running an occasional malware scan helps too and Malwarebytes is good but many tests prefer Superantispyware, as do I. However it's also a good idea to run them both or alternate them. Always be sure to have current updates to all your programs!

That folder name sounds suspicious so running a malware and virus check would be a good idea. I'd also run a disk check on it. Might as well do a defrag if you haven't done one in a while, just for maintenance.

Another good maintenance item is Ccleaner and also get WebAtom's CCEnhancer which "adds support for more than 270 programs to CCleaner, the popular system and Registry-cleaning tool from Piriform". It'll clean out temp files from a number of programs, do a simple cleaning of the registry and gives you other tools. Ccleaner is a great little program, albeit a bit basic in many ways. Just another tool for the arsenal. CCEnhancer only needs to be run occasionally. I don't run CCEnhancer until a new version is out, maybe a couple times a year. I do run Ccleaner probably about weekly and a registry clean probably monthly.

There could be two more possibilities:

1. Your disk may have one or more bad sectors. A 'file write' will fail if it encounters a bad spot on the disk.

I ran into this problem with an extenal Western Digital disk connected through a USB port. I was using this for data backup and at first, jt seemed ok. However, it failed when I attempted to copy a lage group of files to the disk. I was copying an entire folder that contained sub-folders. Some files did not copy.

After puzzling for awhile, I decided to 'bite the bullet' and scan the entire disk. This takes a long time on these big disks (on the order of hours). I ussed the disk scanner built into Windows - Its in the same panel where you find "disk check".

Before I began I wrote down the disk size showing under 'disk properties'. The scan found and marked off several bad sectors. The amount marked off can be seen by again looking at disk size and noting how much space was lost.

After the scan, the disk behaved properly and served me for several years until I upgraded to a new computer and crossed the Windows barrier to a new operating system. (Windows XP is the last OS that has full compatibility with the x-86 software.)

2. Your virus checker may have, rightly or wrongly, decided there was something nasty in the file and interferred with writting it.

After finding a new drive with bad sectors, I decided that i should check any new drive before writig any files to it. Last year, I got an extenal drive with one terabyte of space. It took 36 hours to scan it only to find that every available sector was good. I think it was worth the effort since this is my backup device.

Thanks for all the help. He has hooked up a temporary one for me now and wants to rebuild mine for me. I bought the hard drive awhile go as he felt it was failing. It is very old. He will also update to Windows 7 for me as well.
