At Last- Spring has sprung

Here on Long Island it's finally gotten warm. After a hard winter, lots of snow and ice, the temps are finally going up. The last bit of snow has melted, and I'm starting to work in the garden. The landscapers came this week and raked up all the leaves, fallen sticks, and other debris. It looks like someone vacuumed our lot! I have some flowers and vegetables seeds growing in pots inside and I'll put them out in May, once I'm sure all threats of frost are over. How is it where you are?

Yes, yes........we had a couple of lovely days, with the birds singing their little hearts out! Today is rainy, but at least we know that spring is a possibility again. I have little seedlings under lights, too. They won't get outside until towards the end of May.

Sitting in my sun room sipping coffee and so thankful for the gorgeous weather. I feel like I'm healing from the trauma of our horrid winter, it was traumatic lol.

Thanks Rick! I'm pretty happy with my floral children :-D My Bunnings flower is so different this time. Im sure the flowers were bigger when I first got it.... not that im complaining though, I love the ruffled edges with the slightly different colour. I'm going to find the photos I took of the last round of flowers and compare them. Sandy is such a lovely lady, and you should see her back yard!!! OH MY GOODNESS! Her grafted plants are the most magnificent sculptures I have ever seen! Not to mention the 100's of different plants she has, so many colours! Hi Heather! Thank you, I'm pretty proud of this lot :-) Sorry, didn't mean to brag about the weather :-P

I'm not sure the name of the blue sedum, it came with the house, and I can't find anything exactly like it online. It looks good when it has new growth like this, and gets rather sprawled out later on. I am very fond of 'Angelina,' I am going to do my best to keep layering it this year and hopefully get more. A slow spreader she is, but wonderful colour throughout the year, especially into the fall. One of my favourites for sure.

Babka, Plenty of hosta yawns (pips) here, and some beginning to stretch their arms - though none of them have thrown back the covers to leap out of bed... yet!!! Here's Neptune - an early riser last year too. Irish Luck was new last year, but being a relative of Invincible, it's no surprise that it's also up with the larks. Frank Lloyd Wright doesn't like to linger in bed either! Overall, I'd say that more than half of mine are "stirring." Last year, they were even further ahead at this time - though not by much. I'd prefer them to stay down longer since March can bring "zapping temperatures." A few were definitely impacted last year. We're certainly experiencing plenty of rain recently (doesn't effect the pots which are under cover), and I'll hope for more moisture than we had last spring and early summer when we had very little rain from April onwards (living in Vancouver who'd have ever thought that might be a problem!!!) Your hosta is certainly making a grand entrance! Hope the diamonds will stay sparkling and gleaming for a lengthy time this year - if not forever!!! BC

The 6 week rule is generally the rule I tend to keep in mind in other areas where I am waiting for brownout or at least the minimum time I can cut the foliage out. Granted the crocus bulb is so small....I'm sure it will be fine cutting them, since I have cut other bulbs while in the green. Mine are planted in flower beds so I just leave brown out naturally since they arean't in my way of other plantings. I gave the lawn a wake up cut the other day. Let me see how long it will get if I leave it alone for a month and a half to decide......never have done the crocus field cause I know I am generally out before then cutting the turf. And MyBrownThumb made a good point which I wasn't even looking at - the height of Cut , may not even affect the foliage to some degree

70 is a teasing start. But I'm still stuck to finish inside cleaning. Guests arriving for 2 weeks soon. Plenty of time for yard work before beach season prevails. Good riddance to winter.

It's been eeking it's way around here too...high tomorrow in Seattle 70..we are about 5 or so degrees less with the heavy marine layer.. I will take it..;)

terri - I'm just north of you and it is beautiful outside. Sunny, clear skies and getting warm - same for tomorrow. I'm in the hills so if there is any fog I don't know about it as we're usually above it. It's always such a treat when the good weather hits a weekend.

In Rehoboth Beach, Delaware for the weekend. Absolutely beautiful 70 degrees,,,just had a nice walk on the boardwalk and some time parked on a bench just staring at the water.
