Surgery went well!

HI guys,
The surgery to remove the prostate went well. I stayed overnight at a friend of ours, to save the drive home and back again.

I got a bug yesterday and was on the couch, getting sick.
I started to feel nauseous on the way home and had a headache and was very tired (got little sleep the nite before). I pulled over into a gravel pit entrance to have a rest hoping to feel better and catch a couple of winks. A cop stopped to see if everything was okay. He probably thought I was weird, but left me alone.

So the day was spent on the couch trying to feel better. Hubby was in the recliner with his catheter. What a pair!!!
LOL. Every sip (literally) of water I took wouldn't stay down.

Feeling better this morning and was able to have a small glass of fruit juice. Hoping everything improves.

I think an update is in order ...long overdue. Thank you for your well wishes rose friends :-) I am doing so well weight wise - have lost 110 pounds and I am getting in better shape every month, by running, biking, swimming and weight training. I have had no complications from the surgery what so ever (Yet?) - I take my vitamin supplements and I eat very healthy - smaller portions than before. I just do not tolerate sugar - it makes me really sick (metabolic dumping syndrome - heart races - I sweat and get nausea - so I stay clear of foods with too much sugar). But loosing weight has also made me regain myself or discower new sides of myself. I have had to work hard on healing years of sexual and physical abuse as a boy - since I have become more in touch with my feelings - my core self - and it has been rough and not always pretty as roses in may. I was assaulted and it retraumatized me and gave me anxiety problems and the court case was tiresome ...to have him sent to jail. For a while I coped by drinking way too much - so I had to bite the dust and admit - that I had to quit drinking - that it was no way to cope with emotions running up and down ... it has taken and still take some therapy ...but I feel better and stronger and more grounded. I am looking for a bigger house ... so I am in between gardens - At least I will be able to keep my rented allotment gardens I use for cutting roses, propagation and veggies/herbs. It is spring so I work my butt off preparing the soil, building raised beds - but it is nice. Most new roses I buy this year I will grow in pots - so I can take them with me to the new house and garden (When I find one I can afford) and I hope that the garden will not be too shaded ...since it will limit the number of roses I can grow. I really look forward to the spring flush - 8 weeks and the roses will start blooming and 10 weeks - peak bloom! Ahh ... (hope the weather behaves the 3-4 weeks they peak!). I do the last pruning and weed these days ... I have not blogged about roses and gardening ... I have had to prioritize and work on the issues I mentioned. Roselvr: Yes - it is important to find a good surgeon that specializes in WLS surgery. And yes there is a risk of complications - but the chances of of improwing life quality is much better - and far out-weighs the risk of complications - most of which can be managed. But all surgery has risks of complications ... Doug - How blessed I was - to be able to meet you in Iowa. I often think of you and your wife and hope you are doing well - and that your rabbits do not eat all your roses. Hugs! Ingrid: If you have read this far - you probably understand why I have not posted much - but just read and lurked here on the forums the last year. The reason you have not seen pictures of me as a big guy - was that I was very good at avoiding camera lenses :-) I will post a before and after picture - this summer. Alida - Sure I remember you! I hope you and Gerbe are doing well - even though I must say that rose does not repeat well - I still love the scent of the flowers.

I've been wondering how you were doing. It's good to hear from you. Yes! Take it easy and do everything you are told! I know guys who didn't and have paid for it ever since. A bit of pain management advice: the first couple of times you go to physical therapy take half a pain pill (or a whole pill) and you'll get more out of the session. Trust me on this. Someone will have to drive you but it'll only be the first couple of times. After that you'll be much stronger and have more endurance. Glad to have you back! "Down Dunkie! Down!" Lori

Yes, the process was easy and orderly. I'm sure it's not quite so easy with a really large hosta though. So when I get around to planting those I'll hope to put them where I want them to stay, space them well and hope not to have to 'surgerize'. Thanks for everything! Also, Ken - a couple years ago you gave me some advice on the Trees forum, about cutting down my huge old silver maple. I was so sad to cut it down, but now so glad we did it. I was going to post some photos, but didn't get any -- however, before they ground out the stump we measured and it was 36" in diameter. Now we have 3 nice redbuds that have gotten pretty well established and are growing like weeds, and I'm sure they'll provide better screening for our purposes than that maple ever could. I figure they'll be nice for planting hosta underneath too! Stoc - thanks! Susie is my garden companion!

bet you anything you got a bug in the hospital! they're the germiest places ever! after my hyst I was stuck there for over a week...I used to gag everytime they mopped the room with dirty water...don't care how much disinfectant is in it!

glad you and dh are home and he's able to get around! not fun to be on a cath, but he's ok!!

Glad it went well!

The policer officer was making sure you A) didn't need an ambulance and B) weren't stoned out of your gourd. Seriously doubt he truly thought you weird. Prolly glad he didn't need to do anything (be that protect and serve kind of guy he's been hired to be). I am so sorry you're ill! I hope you get well soon. (((jasdip and hubby)))

Glad to hear your DH's surgery went well! OMG, on you getting sick now... probably because you caught something when you were around the doctor's office or pharmacy or hospital the past few days. :p I seem to always get sick whenever I have to go to any of those places for routine things. :( Hope you feel better soon and that your DH doesn't get it from you!

I'm up and around and feeling better. I had a piece of toast and butter and drinking some green tea.

What do people eat who were ill, when tea and toast is the norm for eating the first time? :-)

Hi Sherry, Happy to learn that all went well with your husband's surgery. Hopefully his recovery (with the dreaded catheter) will go smoothly.

It sounds from your post that the hospital at least kept him overnight? If so that is wonderful. I wasn't sure if they actually would based on some horror stories I have heard. I would not have been surprised to learn that they sent him home with orders for you to return with him at 6:15 a.m. the next morning. (This happened with my husband's vitrectomy.)

Too bad that you got sick. No doubt the worry, the hospital and the horrendous wet weather all played a part in it. As to what people ate before tea and toast when sick - well nothing or flat ginger ale and unsalted crackers.

Please take it easy and make sure your husband does as well. I hope you have an appointment to change/clean his catheter sooner rather than later.

And keep dry.

Glad for a successful surgery and sorry you got a nasty bug. With all the stress you have been under your system was just ripe for any bug floating around and you were in a place full of bugs so that is probably why it got ya.

I think they usually say BRAT!

Glad everything is going well for you. Everyday should be better and better. When I have an upset stomach all I want is to sip on ginger ale and soda crackers. Take care

His surgery was done with a robot and a surgeon.The robot's name is "Leonardo" because the brand is Da Vinci. LOL

Leo assisted the surgeon and that type of surgery is far preferable to manually cutting him open and removing the prostate. That is a 4-day hospital stay and much longer recuperation.

An overnight stay is all that's required and we go back down in a week for the surgeon or a urologist to remove the catheter. No home care nurse is to remove it.

There are 5 little incisions that have 1 or 2 staples in and a larger one with 5 staples.

So far so good, he's resting comfortably and getting up and around walking as he's supposed to. He's got a pile of Tylenol 3 along with anti-biotics. He's not in any pain, and the prescription says to take Tylenol 3 every 6 hours.
