Personally, I would prefer the patch - but I find that after a couple of days I react to the adhesive. This is even with changing regularly, and alternating the area applied. The reaction isn't serious, but it is red and itchy.

So if you've ever had any adhesive reaction - go for the pill.

What is an adhesive reaction ?

Your skin gets very irritated under the adhesive. I get it so bad that it hurts.

Gosh, I would think that once you've started to feel the motion sickness, it would be too late for the pill. Seems you should take it to prevent motion sickness.

I, too, am allergic to adhesives. Can't wear bandages, and most medical tape gives me problems, too. Even the steri-strips. To the degree that once after a breast biopsy, the incision was closed with steri-strips (which are supposed to fall off by themselves when they're "ready"), and the adhesive caused a horrible open wound...

Will the pill make you sleepy? If so I would go for the patch.

What about the bracelets? Have you tried them? My sister swears by them, she takes them on all her cruises.
I know a few women that said they worked great for morning sickness too.
I have not tried them but I want to get some. I keep my prescription for zofran filled and with me any time I travel, some of my meds will occasionally cause nausea it works quickly for that.

I would use the patch when my ex and I would go out deeper sea fishing for the day, which was almost every weekend. Worked well for me, but be prepared for a dry mouth. Why would you hesitate over $60......fill the script and be prepared.

I also believe that the pressure point bracelets can be truly effective. Another factor to keep in mind is to avoid staring at a rolling ocean when it gets a bit rocky. Having four walls surrounding you visually will do much to help.

Buy some ginger candy and ginger tea!

Most of all, be prepared but don't worry about it. I would expect you to be perfectly fine, even in rolling seas. Mind over matter helps with motion sickness and your cruising experiences will be of great help to you.

I like the patch although this last time it gave me dry mouth but I've been in some pretty rough seas with it and it's always come through. I am prone to seasickness tho will continue to use it if I need to.

I agree with Lindylu that if the pills are going to make you sleepy, use the patch. It's not fun walking around in a fog of drowsiness.

Rhizo, for me "mind over matter" does not control motion sickness! It relates to the inner ear, not the inner brain!

My boyfriend gets terrible motion sickness. I want to go on a cruise so I bought him a goodie bag full of anti-sickness things! The Sea-Band, a couple of natural essential oil products with great reviews (MotionEaze, Queaseease) and some ginger products.

We personally stay away from medication whenever possible and try to keep it natural.

Actually, you do not want to go into a closed room if you start to feel ill. The best thing is to stare at the horizon, which is the one thing that will not be tilting. I get horrible seasickness.It drives me crazy because I enjoy going out on the ocean. I even start to feel sick at the slightest rolling. Not to be crude, but what works best for me is to force myself to throw up. I always feel fine fter that. Better to prevent it in the first place. If I take dramamine, I may as well stay home since I fall asleep.

Try the patch. I never have, but if I were going to be somewhere where I could not insist on being taken ashore, that's what I would do. Many swear by the bracelets, too.

I did read on the box of pills, that I purchased the warning for becoming drowzy.

Pharmacist told me, with the pills I bought, to take one when the sickness began and it would take affect within 30 minutes. This was at CVS where I get all my prescriptions.

I'm going to my "faithful" health store, today, and see what they have to offer.

Glenda, I crossed the Drake Passage which is notoriously rough using the patch and felt fine. People taking the pill were still a little green around the gills. I did not have any reaction to the adhesive but others might.

GINGER TRIPS that's what I'm getting!

I used bonine when I was having bouts of vertigo, it didn't make me sleepy.

I've never heard of the bracelets before, pretty cool if they work. No drugs in your system.

Maybe you should have an arsenal and see which one works the best for you. You don't want to be sleepy, you don't want your skin irritated and painful. I would def get some ginger somehow also.

That's what I would do I would have a whole case of motion sickness products in my luggage. I want to get some of the bracelets. I know the sea band ones like they sell at walgreens and cvs are much cheaper but they tend to stretch out and get smelly, I would pay more for the long lasting ones that can be used over and over. The time we went snorkeling in the Bahamas on the boat ride back I got really sea sick but it was because I had accidentally swallowed some salt water. I wish I had those things then!

After reading the title, I thought this was about birth control for Glenda. Duh! Guess not.

I've heard of ginger, the patch, the bracelet....I take bonine. I take it just before boarding. I also use it for reading in the car on long trips. About an hour before my usual bed time it makes me drowsy....so it's not like it effects me adversely, keeping me from doing anything I'd otherwise be doing during the day....

Try the ginger products you get first. I got some from the health food store just for nausea but the taste of them made me even sicker. When I get nauseated if I put anything in my mouth that has a taste it makes it worse.
Altoids also makes a ginger Altoids now, I can't stand them either.

Just got off the phone with Bob, at Golden Temple, my health store, and he said his preference is crystalized ginger. Said you get it in its purist form that way and it goes to work right away.

I use the patch, but that's because I get horrible motion sickness. The slightest amount of turbulence will on a flight will make me sick; I have to wear the patch every time I fly. I also have the acupressure bands and take ginger during the trip. I still usually feel a little queasy even with all that. I was sick the entire time during our first and only cruise and was wearing the patch and taking dramamine. Glenda, if you don't usually get sick during other cruises then you'll probably be fine with what you're doing.
