Communion suggestions

Dh's niece has her communion soon. We won't be going due to previous plans but want to give her a gift. We see her maybe 2-3 X/year though we live close. She doesn't really "know" us, nor do we "know" her.

She comes from a sizeable family and lots of parent's friends who will shower her with the usual money, jewelry, pic frames, bible, rosary, bonds, so we want to get her something different that she can use now. Kids don't appreciate bonds like their parents do, so that's out. I prefer not to give cash for my own reasons. We don't want to do "a special day out" for her as a gift since that would be uncomfortable for her and us.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I'm looking to spend $50 at most. Does that seem like an okay amount? Any gift ideas? Thanks.

$50 seems more than enough...i might split it like a special frame for her picture, and one of those music cards...

Oxyclean will also fade the color. Are the cushion covers removeable? If so try wetting the stain ( put the stain part over a bowl) and sprinkling salt on it...squeese some fresh lemon juice on the salt covered stain and then pour boiling water from a height over the stain. If it will remove it, it's like magic!...If it won't? Nothing happens! LOL! But it's the only thing I can think of that won't ruin the upholstery. My church has wine red seat cushions!! Our communions were 10 am!!! When Amy made her communion there were 5 classes of second graders so they split them up and had one at 10am and one at 1 pm. We scored the early one. I used the crock pot for the Italian Pork as well as the wedding soup. Just set them to low when we left. We also had all the coolers filled...folks were more thirsty than humgry and for those who weren't comfortable with the whole church experience-we had wine chilled and ready to go. I rounded out the meals with salads, shrimp cocktail, antipasta and nuts. The dessert was always the obigatory sheet cake along with the childs fave dessert. For take away gift or "party favors" I had the kids make little prayer cards on the computer which I had laminated. I placed each card in a white cello bad with a wrapped homemade muffin and 2 tea bags and some white peppermint sticks. It was meant to be a little snack after you went home. The only other advice I could give is to not fuss too much over the the whole getting ready thing. If the hair doesn't go just right don't fret. Also consider going to a portrait studio a few days later for photos. The girls will be more relaxed....you'll be more relaxed and you'll end up with beautiful pics. I think it looks really nice. Good job, not easy being brave! White subway tiles - I would be afraid that white would make your lower cabs and white cabs seem like one big white wall. Maybe not, but its something that occurred to me and I'm not sure I'd like that. I was wondering about your counters, not the color so much but what IS the strip thing in it? What are your counters made of? If this is some sort of sandwiched in material that can't be painted then I would think you are "stuck" with the green right? I'm not personally (who cares!) a fan of the blue you are thinking about but it would technically look nice with the brown, I don't think it goes with the outside greenery though or the forest green stripe. If it were me, I would bring in the gold color from down the hall instead in a material that also has some forest green and maybe some rust, a plaid or floral for the window treatments. Then do some placemats, dishes, table runners, table top treatments, chair pads (not all of them!), with the forest green and maybe some more of the window treatment fabric to tie together. I think that would work better with the lush greenery you see outside. Frames - Several options. If you did the matting right with the black frames your pictures might appear to "float" on the wall. Which could be sort of cool, a slightly more modern look, personal taste in whether you like that or not. You could keep the black frame which essentially disappears, and mat with white, then a skinny black and then white - so the black mat then becomes the black frame, now highlighted. Or you could try to match frames to your lighting hardware (is that oil rubbed bronze?) but you might run into the same problem of it being too muted against the brown. Or, you have some stainless steel things, you could complete that by painting your wrought item wall hanger things and basket stainless steel with spray paint and go with silver frames. Really, you could quite a lot here. I think white frames would be a bit much for me but I think one or two large substantial wood painted white frames might work, just not a lot of little pictures in thin white frames. Even if you stopped now it looks nice. Keep everyone updated! P.S. If privacy is an issue with those windows, I really liked my solar shades, you can hide them with a valence. And they come in something similar to a goldish color.

Seeing as how you haven't seen this friend in quite a while, I think $50 dollars is fine. If you were closer friends that amount would be upped. But since you are not $50 is good.

Ask her parents what her favorite stores to shop in are. Gift card to that store.

A nice card and a visa/master charge gift card, It is hard giving someone you don't know very well any type of gift.

Do you have a religious book store you can visit? Would she appreciate a nice religious picture? I particularly like the ones of Jesus with the children or a guardian angel watching over the kids. $50 seems like quite a lot to spend on a First Communion gift, to me.

I would definetely do an Amazon card or Visa gift card.

A down-to-earth book with a religious, lifestyle ... possibly even a money-management (says this old financial advisor) ... book, perhaps?

Including some humour, even better.

If you knew her better, and have the capability ... maybe write a poem just for her.

I thought that $50.00 was a bit much ... but Protestants take first communion somewhat more lightly ... well, not more lightly ... but perhaps with fewer external trappings ... than do Roman Catholics.

Thanks all for the suggestions. The book one seems most appealing for this seven year old, but I'm still looking.

I've gotten her gift cards before for other occasions so I prefer not to do that this time.

Keep the suggestions coming if you have more.

I like the religious book store suggestion. They will be able to help you find a great gift.
If she's only 7 she'll love anything "Veggie Tales".My favorite is the "Silly Songs" CD or DVD. You can also find them on Amazon.

I run a gift shop in our Catholic Parish. There are some lovely books that you could give.

There is a Bible Stories for Catholic Children from the Hirten company that is very nice. "My First Communion Bible" by St. Benedict Press is available from Amazon. It is very nice too. It is shown in Brown, but it also comes in White.

A nice rosary bracelet might be nice, but it would cost much less than $50.00.Pope Benedict has a book for children talking about his first communion.

A music box that plays the Ave Maria could also be nice.

I remember at that age, someone gave me a book about woman who were important in history. It was a great way to learn just a little bit about women in history and made me want to learn more. In a quick look on Amazon, I found this one Remember the Ladies: 100 Great American Women. It isn't very expensive. Maybe you could add one about important women in the Bible or women who changed the world.

I like the book idea, and the one that Fun2BHere suggested looks great. Here's a nice looking one about women in the bible as well. I also saw a cute girls book/bible bag on Amazon. Maybe something like that to put the books in. I think you could get the bag and 2-3 books easily (maybe more) without going over your $50 price.

know she's christian, but as a kid, i adored the "all of a kind" family books.. they're about a jewish family at the turn of the century (1900's) in new york city....it taught me a lot about holidays you hear about in the bible and some lesser ones...and it was a great introduction to another religion...

all of our grands have recieved a precious moments bible, either at the first easter, or didication, to the churches the kids now belong to now...they have a pink or blue binder and sweet pictures...veggie tales are a biggie, too, at 7...
