Jean, I've missed the history about this cat. Is he new and you're getting him used to a leash? Or have you decided to keep him inside except for occasional leash time? Whatever the reason, good for you for keeping your kitty safe and healthy inside!

Any day is a pea soup kind of day for me! We both love it, don't get tired of it, and it's the soup I make more often than any others.

I take my cat out on a harness and leash, too. He's used to it so he's finally learned to walk fairly nicely on it. He loves going out--too much!

I also love making split pea soup in the crockpot. I make it with Canadian bacon and it smells so good! One thing I do is to put a couple shots of tabasco in it--gives it just a bit of a "bite."

Tobasco is a must here, too.

May I tell a little story about split pea soup?

My DH was serving in the Army Air Force in the South Pacific in WW2. When the war ended and he and his comrades were brought home, it took 13 days on board ship to get back to the US. He said they had split pea soup every day and he hoped when he got home never to see a bowl of it ever again! I made sure that he didn't.

Any time I hear those words ... split pea soup ... I remember his words.

rhizo, this is the cat, formerly known as Bat, but we changed his name to Loki, cuz he's such a trickster. This picture was taken a few months ago.
We got him at the pound as a tiny thing just before Halloween, and his card said he was brought in as a stray. I imagine he had lived on the street.
He's a big guy now, and sometimes hard to remember he's still just a kitten.

The darned soup still had some hardish bits in it, even after simmering for over 7 hours! We ate it anyway. The leftovers should be good tomorrow.

Does anyone rehydrate the split peas before using them. I started to, so instead of just rinsing them twice I then put them in a two cup measure cup with water and they absorbed it all in a couple of hours. I found the soup cooked so much faster and no hard ones left. Cut cooking time down over two hours last week when I made it. I know not the cooking thread ...but I don't have cats or dogs....only fish :^)

There's a first step I follow with split peas and dried beans to speed cooking and reduce intestinal flatulence.

Put the legumes into a pot of water with at least 3X the volume of water as the volume of dry beans/peas.

Bring to boil. Turn off heat, cover, let sit one hour.

Pour off water, then use the almost fully cooked legumes to prepare whatever recipe you're making. Soup can be done in as little as one more hour. You can saute onions and other veggies in another pot while the peas sit. Or, take out the peas when done, use the soup pot to saute the veggies, then add back the peas and whatever liquid and other things you use.

No, I do not soak the peas. I used to but found it not to be necessary. The soup only takes a couple of hours from start to finish for me. Perhaps I use a higher heat or something.

Your pretty black cat looks like my Paco, a little lost soul who had the wisdom to come into our garage one evening five years ago and has been part of our household ever since.

I made split pea soup today too. Will have it for lunch tomorrow.

I love soup and have made many different kinds but split pea is one I haven't tried or made. Would like to through.

I am not fond of split pea soup but I did fix 15 bean soup over the weekend, can't taste the split peas too much in it. I soaked mine over night and then cooked it long and slow in my crock pot added some ham to it later.
