What fun! I didn't realize it was the breed of hen that determined the eggshell color. But...of course, Robins lay blue eggs!

My mother grew up on a small farm, but I only heard stories -- nothing *useful* about raising hens. She had a pet banty that she said "ruled the roost".

That's so fun, I've been thinking I really had room for some with an acre, but we're just allowed three per household here inside city limits.

We've been getting eggs through a friend whose office manager is raising hens, I think she has about 14 and a few are 'frizzles'. Not only do they have a charming look (her girls as she calls them), the eggs are delicious. There seems to be a mix of brown, green, blue, peach colored and occasionally there is a white egg or two in my box when I get it. They're almost too pretty to eat :)

Morz8 I have heard of the chicken you are talking about. They look so cute and different with their feathers.

I saw a gal with two "pet" ones at a home show recently. They were so neat! Of course, they were selling "coops" that you could move around. enjoy!

I LOVED having chickens. I'd let them into the garden right after we rototilled, and they would be in HEAVEN scratching and eating bugs and worms. I'd sit on a big rock and watch them, and sing with them.

We had chickens in CA and did have a variety. We too loved the ""Easter egg " ones, green, blue, pink etc. We also had the brown and white ones. Glad you are going to enjoy yours.

Leghorns (white) usually lay white eggs while a Plymouth Rock (Black with white speckles) might lay brown eggs.

I used to have quite a few Leghorns and they can really fly, had to clip the wings often. I did not pick out any of those but did get a White Austro. It is a cross between a Black Australorpe and a white Leghorn. they are the ones that lay white eggs, the rest of my flock should lay brown or green or blue. The different farm stores around are selling chicks now and you have to buy at least 5 or 6 at a time. It depends on the store. My flock includes a Buff Orpington, a Rhode Island Red, a Lacy Wyndotte, a Black Australorpe, and a Black Amerucana. Plus the White Austro which will be white with black splotches. When grown they will be allowed to roam free part of the time at least. There is a small pen beneath and to the side of the chicken house they will be in till old enough to roam. We live in the country and have 7 acres.

Do all of these breeds get along? Do they have some different personality traits? Do you need to keep a rooster...or two?

I remember a friend who had Silkies for years. I loved their fluffy feathers and feathery feet.

Chisue, no I don't need any roosters, I don't plan to hatch any eggs and they are noisy! The chicks will get along fine as they grow up as they are pretty docile breeds. Mike put most of my Chicken Chalet together today, just a few minor things to finish up after he gets it moved. It is on his trailer here. Now I am waiting for the chicks to grow and warmer weather to arrive so they can come here.
