The moisture-retaining kitty litter bucket planter
Comments (9)I have five cats, so I go through a lot of cat litter. I began getting the 28 pound buckets when I realized the uses they had. (There's no way I can lift a 40 pound bucket.) Two of them are now housing tomatoes, and one is home to a bell pepper. What I'd love to do is turn them into self-watering containers, but the reservoir thingies I see for sale are for round pots, not for square ones. I have a massively huge tomato plant in a self-watering "square foot success kit" that I got from Gardener's Supply. Be nice to make a homemade one....See MoreCan I re-use soil that had damaged spinach in the container?
Comments (2)Spinach is a cool season plant. Check your zone for planting times. Potted soil is depleted more or less from what had been growing in it. It is recommended to start with fresh for new plants. For pots 5 gal. and larger I usually replace 1/2 the soil. I also fertilize with a very dilute solution every time they're watered since some nutrients, notably nitrogen, wash out....See MoreKitty Litter in Laundry Room Question......
Comments (39)Four indoor cats here -- and one litter box! It is kept in the unused master bathroom bathtub! A hard decision -- but that spot has worked out SO well for us. Our litter box must be lidless because our cats literally outgrew the lid itself! LOL! The best thing of all is that the box cannot be seen because of the high walls of the tub AND the fact the tub is located behind the "swing" of the door so I love it! And the tub is easy to clean too! Our policy is scoop out the box several times during the day -- into a grocery bag, tie it shut, and stash in a tall brass garbage bin (which also has a medium sized plastic bag) that JUST fits in a empty slot between the vanity and the shower. The garbage can is emptied once a day out to the main outside garbage can. We were lucky that a litter container JUST fits in behind the brass bin too! So the extra-large main container of litter sits in the garage -- and the DH fills up the one in the bathroom. The scoop is kept in a pretty garbage bin just under-and-behind the toilet -- so it is out-of-sight too. But still handy! Along with a brush-and-pan to sweep up any scattered litter. And a deodorant spray like Febreeze (which works great BTW!) I would dearly love a better spot -- but this house has no basement nor a laundry room so this system has worked for all of us! Comments (37)The things we do for our pets! We have 5 cats and 6 boxes. We have them in a closet in our laundry room, in a closet in our master bath, and a few in the basement. We make them from Rubbermaid type storage totes, which helps contain the litter in the box and prevents accidents (one kitty accidentally pees over the edge of traditional, shorter boxes). For the ones in our living space, I put them on heavy duty area rugs from Home Depot or Lowes - they're sort of like water hog mats that can be hosed off. I also use large, washable incontinence pads on the floor surrounding the master closet box, just in case. The one in our master closet also sits on an appliance tray. My husband gave up his side of the master closet to accommodate that box for the cat who lives in our bedroom all of the time. I lined that side of the closet in plastic to keep the walls/shelving dust free, and hung a shower curtain to the entrance so litter dust doesn't make it over to my side. I scoop all of our boxes ALL THE TIME. I don't love having boxes in closets, but it works for now. I figure only about 7 or 8 more years of this and then we should be down to only 1 or 2 cats at most, and can accordingly reduce our litter boxes. Yippee!!...See Morelydia1959
