I moved!! LONG

By choice I went into an assisted living facility in Minot and so far do like it. NO stairs, more people to visit etc. I have a 2 bedroom place, can choose to eat the three meals they serve, or cook myself. So far I haven't cooked. Meals very good and yes it is fun (for me) to visit. Found 2 friends from my town here, have my own car, and sure enjoy downsizing my junk. I still have my half of the duplex where I live, but oh so much closer to shops and other things. Get free transportation if I want--nurses on duty 24/7 and they are very nice. Very quiet area and everyone says HI when I walk up and down the halls. I had been thinking about this for a long time but DH would not even consider it. Have computer set up, finally, new phone, good cable (same as before, but I do get free basic and just pay for the extended. This is one of the larger places and places in Bismarck, Fargo, and several other place and not much above the rent I would have had to pay if I had gone into a apt. Good maintenance My kids live in the other half the duplex so no worry there. Questions? feel free to ask. Marie from ND

I think you leave it until too late. When you dig the bush up, just make sure you have a huge plastic bag to put it in immediately. Then keep this bag in the coolest spot away from the Sun. The bag helps to keep the moisture in so the roots won't dry out. Taking cutting is OK. Make sure you take fairly mature canes and seal into aplastic bag and keep in your fridge just like keeping veggies. Now, the next thing you might like to venture is to graft (bud) it on another live host to make sure you have a copy. You can buy a potted rose of easy type like Iceberg or something that grow very easily. Take a bud off this rose and graft on the potted rose. This buy you time to do more later when you settle at the new place.

Years ago, at our market garden, I grew sugar baby watermelons very successfully south of you in Orange County, near Port Jervis. Then in recent years, before moving to Maine, I grew them in the Adirondacks, outside Saranac Lake. They were more of a challenge there, but I harvested some. If your 4 year old is like me (and a lot of 4 year olds are, I'm finding out!) he or she won't mind eating them at the tail end of the summer. Some random thoughts... Re: the trees. Some maples are solid trees, some aren't as said so I'd get someone who knows trees to look at them. The real estate agent *can't* say anything against the house by obligation. They have a fiduciary obligation to the seller so never trust a real estate agent. They're out for the money. If they'll put it in writing that the trees are solid, fine, then they're responsible but of course they won't. Real estate agents rank very close to telemarketers IMO. Also, if you need to remove the trees, that can be rather costly. So be careful. However, again, they could be good trees and I'm a fan of trees. Re: the lawn. I like a big yard. If you're not too finicky, just get a riding mower and you can handle mowing. Or if you don't like it, hire it done or in the future you could hire someone. I've been hiring occasionally when I just can't handle it. Not very expensive and I find great value having distance between myself and the neighbors. Re: Standing water. Can be important or not. How much water? Can it be modified slightly to drain better? With the bottom of the outbuilding rotted it suggests an issue although that could depend on the age. Have you had an unusual amount of precipitation recently, snow and rain that would make this a fluke or is it normal amount of water? If it's normal, expect it. If it's going to pond water in the summer, you could have mosquito issues. What's the soil conditions? Sandy? Clay? If there's not very good drainage that would be a consideration. Re: the outbuilding. The owner saying it's good, well, that's a representation. If they don't make a disclosure you could have recourse against them if it turns out it's more rotted than you think. I might still have it inspected and do some negotiating that they misrepresented the place so they're not trustworthy. Are there any disclosures on the place about it, the drainage, etc? Re: Mailbox. You can buy a new mailbox for $10-$20 and up if the looks of the mailbox really bothers you. That wouldn't be a consideration to me nor would replacing the glass on the light fixture. That's petty cash expense. You'd spend more buying a piece of Tupperware than those two expenses combined! I wouldn't let that determine whether or not to buy a house. Re: Outside looks (brick, etc) To me, would see the inside of the house more than the outside so to me, the inside is more important. Much like I'm more concerned about holiday decorations *inside*, that I'll see, than outside. I'm not here to put on airs for others. Some people take a lot of pride in the outside looks of their houses and want it a certain way. If that's you, there's treatments for brick, even paint, which I dislike, but many like it. Options: Have sellers remove the trees, remove or repair the outbuilding or deduct from the price appropriately. As far as adding on... Are you going to get what the other house offers you, or a different house should you decide to keep looking? Remodeling can be expensive but doesn't have to be. If you can get what you want, and if you like where you live, then it's worth considering. Sit down and write out what you REALLY want in a house. Include room sizes, costs, payments if applicable, don't forget taxes, insurance, how close to shopping, doctors, recreation, etc. Then, see if the house you're looking at has it. How about the house you have? How does it compare? Then look at a few different modifications to the house. With it done, how would it compare? For me, an attached garage is a very important feature on a house so when I look for places, it really subtracts value if there's not at least a single attached garage. It helps if it would be able to be added easily. I've run across several places I really liked, but when I went home, sat down and looked at my priority list, well I haven't moved yet... Years ago I made a list of things I really like about my place and a list of things I really don't like, together with things I would like in a new place and might like. There's been things on other houses I've seen that impress me so I noted them. I know I'll never find "the perfect place" but it helps to evaluate different ones. And now as I'm getting older, accessibility is more and more important. But I try to keep it realistic. For instance a new place would be nice if it was one level living, however as long as there's the main rooms, a bathroom and a bedroom on the main floor, it would work for me. A place with all bedrooms and bathroom(s) upstairs would not. Also with looking at places I've seen some modifications to certain common style houses that were well done and really would work well for me. Maybe some of these would help you in your considerations. Kinda makes your head spin, I know. In most places, it's still more of a buyer's market so don't let a salesperson scam you. And keep in mind there's LOTS of houses for sale even if you don't get this one!

That's great Marie! I wish my sister was able to go into something like that instead of the crappy apartment building she is living in. If I can't stay in my house and feel I need help I will sell my two houses and move into one. This way I wouldn't have to decide who to leave the houses to and I would spend the money on a place like yours. My friend's Mom lived in an assisted living place in Windsor a few years ago and it was almost $4,000 a month and that wasn't even in the nicer ones we have now.that I am sure cost more.

i am so happy for you. Your own place within security. People your own age to talk to you, Activities to do if you want or not. Best part the cooking. My husband had moved his mother to one here in Georgia and she made so many friends. Had her own space but she always kept the door open so she could see who was in the hall. Staff was also wonderful. Enjoy. Glad you are back.

Thanks for letting us tag along with you on this new living adventure. My DH and I hope to continue a while longer in our house, but we are interested in investigating the pros and cons of assisted living. You can be our inside 'man'!

What is the name of the organization that owns and manages your place? Is it licensed and inspected by the state or city? What category of communal living is it? (Doesn't sound like it offers skilled nursing care, but maybe?)

I tend to have a lot of questions because I had a bad experience with the buy-in residence/skilled nursing care place my mother went into in the 1970's. The independent living portion was fine. The assisted living part was OK too.The skilled nursing part was a disgrace.

I always thought DH and I would just do a rental arrangement, then choose a skilled nursing facility we knew was good if the need arose.

I'm sure your family is happy for you, also. I know that I worry about my Mother living in her home alone and something happening. It sounds like a great place, good for you.

That's wonderful, I'm so happy for you. I've been trying to convince my mother at her doctors suggestion of the same for the last two years and somehow it just doesn't appeal to her. She's too crumbly to continue with the yard and heavier housework, resists help (86 and significant osteoporosis)

Please enjoy your new surroundings, and take advantage of that dining room! Bliss, someone to cook for you, or snacks/meals in your own suite if you wish. Do you have housekeeping services available as part of your services provided? What about laundry, your own in your apartment or shared laundry facility....

I'm really, truly glad to hear you are comfortable there. Are there other activities you can participate in on the premises if you want to socialize but you don't feel like going out that day?

This sounds like the perfect situation. You come and go as you choose, cook if you want to, be alone if you want to. But, when you don't feel like cooking or feel like company, it's right outside your front door.

You are in a good place to grow old in.
I like that this takes the stress off of your children. The decision was made in a logical and calm manner, not when it became dire.

My parents enjoy living in their Kisco facility here in California -- it sounds very much like your place. They have made many friends, and I know that they are safe when I'm not there.

My Mother lived in an assisted living place and it was very nice and the food was really good. Guests could eat for $5.00 each. She had a one bedroom place, her own kitchen and much the same as you have. That has been a few years ago and it was close to $4,000 a month back then. She did not get to live there too long as she started to need more care and had to go into the nursing home. I am glad you are happy there.

My mother moved to an Asst. Living facility after we lost my dad. It was a brand new facility and she loved it there. Several of her friends were living there too. She was always a very social person and enjoyed all of the events and trips available. She had her car and came and went whenever she wanted. I'm sure your new home will provide lots of fun times for you too.

Sounds like you found the perfect place! I can never understand why people are so against those places. Just the socializing alone would be worth it to me. Would I rather be lonely? Oh H*ll no!!!

My Stepdad insisted on staying in the family home after Mom's death, despite his increasing frailty. We were two hours away so it wasn't easy to check on him. He had some falls and we got him one of those alert pendants for our peace of mind as much as his, after I had to call the police to check on him after I had been unable to reach him by phone for two days. (Turned out he was on a pre-arranged stay in the hospital, which he didn't think to bother telling us about :-/.)
We suggested an assisted living place but he dug his heels in and resisted the idea until finally he went into hospital and his doctor told him he wouldn't be able to go home and live alone with no help. So we took him around to check out different places and moved him into one of his choosing.
He was as happy as a pig in mud! Much happier than he had been for years. No meals to cook, no cleaning to do, plenty of like-minded folks to socialise with. It was such a shame he hadn't made the move earlier, he would have been so much happier all those years.
