Im Wein lieht Wahrheit!

Just discovered a small antique jackknife in DH's collection with that, in relief (raised), on it. There is a corkscrew on the outside and grapeleaves, so I've got some idea, but what does it actually say? Thanks, Sandy

    In wine lies truth.

"lieht" should be "liegt"= to lie

    Probably more famous in Latin:

    "In vino veritas."

in vino veritas => in wine there is truth

Meaning that if you drink wine you will say what you really think

Ah, so true. Thanks for the translation, and the Latin too.

I knew I could count on the diverse knowledge of our KT :) Sandy
