Here is the full shot of the table cloth top. I moved the mother's motifs so that the entire top of the table will be her work. The skirt around the edges is all my work. I remodeled this cloth from a ragged, misshapen circle to a rectangle. Since my table is an oval, the skirt shows more of her work at the rounded end than what will be the corner on his.

I started this project in 2008 and finished it after much trepidation and back tracking only last month. Eric has his mother's cloth now, and he is most appreciative.

Sorry, but it is upside down and I am not sure how to fix it. It does look better right side up.

What should be in the tray? Well, what do you use the room for? When you're in there, what are you usually doing? Reading? Then maybe a small reading journal (listing books you want to read or have read, if you have trouble keeping track, like me), reading glasses if you need them, Post-Its. Or: a few magazines, small notepad/pen if there's a phone in that room, a small tube of hand cream. Now those are in the "usefuls" department. You can create a "tablescape" kind of thing by using, say, a collection of flat-backed paperweights ("millefleur" type comes to mind -- google it), the little glass pebbles that have interesting sayings carved into them (like "Simplify"). Maybe you've collected small toys like mini Rubik's Cubes over the years--hey, I'm just trying to get your imagination going!--put them in there to play with. Maybe a bundle of dried flowers (like lavender)? For the cloth topper itself: Find a fabric store and wander around the decorative cloth section (where they have the extra-long bolts for curtains, upholstery) and the quilting fabric section. Or if you like lacy stuff, you'll probably find that. There are many interesting patterns. You can easily hem the edges either with hand-stitching or an iron-on fusible webbing (just tell a clerk what you are planning and he/she will know what you need).

Kublakan, thank you so much! The gazebo actually came from SAMs club several years ago. Lesley, thank you, you're so kind. I do spend hours in the yard and have been tremendously blessed to have such a wonderful husband who has the talent to build things and help me with the "big" stuff. I'm not really sure how many roses I have. Never enough, that's for sure! Lol. This site help start my obsession I think and continues to enable it :) It's sooooo hard to choose favorites but I LOVE most all of the pinks, cream and apricot colored Austins. I wish I had a secret to share but I only have what all of us do and that's a love for roses. There are some great rose growers on here and I love seeing all the different pictures of everyone's beauties.

I haven’t bought one in many years. The Marimekko ones you linked to are fabulous and were iconic designs of the mid century modern. I had a Rya rug in my bedroom If I were you I would just go ahead and order them unless you can google "Nordic oil cloth tablecloths" and find a US distributor. FWIW I got some fabulous large Kim Seybert "chargers" which I use instead of trivets and also as chargers to some extent. They are very heavy plastic and have little feet on the bottom. A permanent sump will need to be installed to handle the ground water. We do this very often. It's not good for the structure to have that amount of water behind after a fresh shot. They should have continued to run the pump. Also, constant moisture will have an affect on the plaster's ability to bond properly. It's much like painting on dry wood as opposed to damp wood. We are currently building a pool on the Hudson River in New York and (2) permanent pumps will be installed to handle the ground water when the tide comes in. Right now (2) temporary pumps are in place. They pick up water about 18" below the bottom of the pool floor. I would also recommend an automatic hydrostatic relief plug. It has a spring loaded cap in the event ground water pressure exceeds the pool water pressure. Essentially a fail safe in the event the sump pump fails. It allows an for exchange of water to hopefully prevent a pop up. We will install a drain cover over the top as well.

That is absolutely beautiful. My Mother did stuff like that. I am so happy I got them when she passed. Mine are in a closet as I have cats and they wouldn't stay off of them. But I do use the doilies she made. She even made me a kingsize bedspread that took years to make.

I smile when I see them. I hope whoever is the receiver of your hours of work appreciates them so.

Orchid, Eric was my son's classmate in law school and a good friend of my son's good friend. He is a lawyer now in the Midwest. He found this tattered and incomplete cloth when he cleared out his mom's house and asked my son for help finishing it. My son told me about it, and when someone on THS found the pattern for me, I volunteered, quite foolishly.

When I emailed him to tell him it was almost completed and to ask him for his current address, I learned he had been in an awful skiing accident 6 weeks earlier. He took a spill on the slopes, and realized as he waited for help that he was paralyzed from the neck down. He was flown to a trauma hospital, had surgery and physical therapy, and is now recovering so well and so quickly that he is amazing his doctors. He said his mom had been working overtime from heaven to help him and me too. So this cloth arrived at a time when he could really appreciate it. And he is very appreciative of my efforts.

He knows how long it took me he says because he remembers his mom crocheting projects that took her years. Her stitches were so tight and so fine that I can imagine that she had to limit her time crocheting to spare her hands.

Do you have a partial cloth that needs to be finished too?
