I did not feel anything in Laguna Beach, but expecting to feel slight tremors from aftershocks once we make it home today since our house is west of Pasadena and friends there have been feeling the bigger aftershocks. Be careful of relying on canned goods in glass, since in a really bad quake they could all break.

Six months after the Loma Prieta earthquake, I was teaching a class in downtown San Francisco. I was walking back and forth, trying to get some response from the class, when I lost their attention completely. Someone asked, 'Didn't you feel it?" It was a magnitude 6.something quake, one of about 75 aftershocks that day. Several of the people in that class had been stuck in an elevator in the building during the Loma Prieta quake, and they were panicked by that aftershock.This building was adjacent to another, separated by about 4 inches, and during the Loma Prieta quake they banged against each other, and the interior of the other building still hadn't been repaired, Then there was the time I was in a meeting in Rochester and heard a loud noise, like a herd of elephants running nearby. I thought it was an earthquake, but the person I was meeting reassured me that it was only a nearby train. After I left to drive to the airport, I heard on the car radio that yes, it was an earthquake. Rochester, N.Y.!

I had moved to CA the day before the Norhtridge earthquake. All my furniture was on a truck in LV and there was no damage to the place we were staying. Having said that, it was still soooooo scary to be woken from a sound sleep by the noise and shaking. There have been several really bad earthquakes in CA, but so far none as bad as these. What many people don’t know is that the many, many aftershocks can be just as - or even more - destructive as the first quake. Everything is ready to come down after the first. And, these areas keep have multiple strong quakes each day. I can’t even imagine the horror these people are living thru’ having everything they know destroyed and thousand upon thousands of people killed - and with no warning. That’s the scariest part of earthquakes… little or no warning. And, like many disasters, they are in dire need of food, water, medical care, and housing…. all at once. AND, since there is so much destruction it is harder to get what is needed to them. It is frustrating to watch since I really can’t do much besides pray for them… and send money. God bless those who are able to actually help physically.

I'm in CT, but didn't feel it. However we had guys on the roof rebuilding the chimney so I would have attributed anything unusual to that. My mom, who lives an hour north of me did remember feeling something once I asked.
