Backing up my backup

Holy Hanna, it's taking forever! I put all of my pictures on an external hard drive. Partly because if my laptop craps out, I'll still have my pictures. I've had a 2T hard drive for a few years now and it's 3/4 full. Not just pictures, but .pdf booklets, documents, etc.. Today I picked up a 1T hard drive and I've been copying my pictures to it from the 2T one. I want to keep that one in my locker at work. I figure if the 2T one craps out, I'll still have the 1T one. And if the house burns down, I'll still have my pictures. Obsessed? Crazy? I dunno........ I just know that my first few cameras (a 4mp and an 8mp) took smaller pictures and the first few years copied quickly. Then I went bigger and started shooting .raw. A few folders have taken over an hour to copy. Then I got a new camera that takes larger pictures and when I saw how big the folders are for 2011, 12 and 13, I figure I'll be spending the weekend moving just those three. I've even cleaned out a lot of pictures. You know the ones. We all have them. "What was I thinking?" pictures.... I still have a lot of video to go through.

So, do you back up your back up?

Many do extra copies. My view is that it's probably not necessary unless you're really serious about what's being stored, and if so, part of your backup plan should be to keep one copy "offsite" (like in a safe deposit box). Which you should.

There's no reason to accumulate raw image files if you aren't going to be working with them further. I'm not a big believer in "what if".

Yeah, after a few years (heck, after less than a year in many areas) it's good to go. If you're really concerned you can always put a couple of inches of straw mulch down around your plantings to prevent soil splash and wash what you harvest...dig around in your soil while wearing gloves...etc etc That said, it's most likely (highly likely) broken down and actually provided a bit of nutrients to your potential garden area at this point.

Look at my thread about Brother Stefan, it seems also to have that yellow maple-leaf like center GE has. I like Cathedral Windows, see below upper left the one I have. Mine was in its second year in my Garden coming from a pot with several eyes. In August last year it suddenly showed nematodes, none in that wider area had them. Bernd

septic tank back-up?

sure sounds like a backup to me. as to whether this is their fault or not, who can say. septic tanks are pumped dry of liquids and solids, but within DAYS they fill back up 100%. they must be full to work. the reason for pumping is that when they get overfull of solids the lines can no longer drain. i wonder if your field drain lines were clogged, you pumped it, then when it filled back up it backed up again.

How good that is, what with our rudimentary level of knowledge, computer-wise (well, somewhat reduced "wise", maybe) may be a matter worthy of some question. Thanks for the info. I had a call purportedly from a windows guy the other day, saying there was something wrong with my computer ... I asked him how he knew, without entering my computer uninvited, and he said they'd noticed there was something wrong ... ... was I at my computer? ... ... he could help me fix it. I told him that I was not at the computer ... ... and that my computer is not attached to the internet, whether by line, tower or satellite. That pretty well ended our conversation.
