Finally, a chance to return. Thank you all for your comments. They really do help. In a nutshell, it doesn't matter where exactly the story takes place, plotwise. In my mind, the time and pace feel like Alabama in the 60's with major medical centers several hours away by car. I want it to be anywhere. The only geographical reference I make is to the mother in law, who is from "up north, outside of Atlanta." I write because I love to. The story is a novella, about 40 pages long, maybe a few less. It is the story of a misfit girl, a box turtle, a homeschooled boy with medical challenges and a friendship that is forever changed by two deaths (the turtle and the boy). I always considered myself a weekend gardener, but not on the same level as many of you. That is why I came here for accuracy. Here is what I have, which I know is off... I have the mother pore over the catalog in Jan, order seeds, and plant in early March. The turtle gets in the garden in early April and lays eggs. I imagine there would be seedlings by that time. I have the turtle dig the hole where the chicory is planted. The eggs have to hatch by early June (fact, not opinion). Later, the baby turtle will eat lettuce, slugs, wild strawberries, some from gardens some from the wild.(the strawberries, that is). In late October, the mother will go out to the garden with a colandar to gather something. By this time, the turtle has died and she sees that someone has left wild strawberries on its grave. She adds something to it from the colandar. what would grow then? Second harvest? Eventually, the boy dies and the girl's mom is planning her garden. Not planting chicory again as it was too bitter for their tastes. Asks her daughter (age 11) what she wants to plant in their place. The girl (who is strange,in a friendless way) looks through the catalog and points eventually to strawberries. Big red ones which I describe as a "wanton shade of red". She wants the strawberries because her friend, the boy who died, always brought strawberries for the turtle. Is there a name of strawberries that sounds hussyish? In general, everything the mom plants is useful and intended for canning or the table. Strawberries are frivoulous, and somewhat of a waste of space, considering there are wild ones in the yards (are there?) But she does it to make her odd child smile again. this story sounds so lame here, but I'd like to think it is much more poignant than I've described. Jo

I had hoped for more writers too. I have been encouraged by my son, mostly, and I think that perhaps you have to be older and have that 'encouragement' to do it. My son, is (ooohh) 52, and is just curious to learn how we got to where we had been before he arrived on the scene and my remembrances of our "gypsy" life during his childhood. We 21st century old folks have lived during such huge changes in our society and in our environment...and even in our values....that we really owe our children a glimpse of how we rose to the occasion of those milestones. Just a thought! Nanny BTW....some old movies that are shown today, show many scenes that our parents aspired to, rather than the fact of life. Not always, but when I see some of them I realize that some of the ideas that my mother tried to make me believe were things that movies told her to aspire to in a subliminal way. Today's entertainment is much more realistic, or is it? I really love the writings of John Steinbeck as he told the truth about the pain of the depression and of the lives, sometimes of desperation, that many people lived. And, yes, I wonder as I see men and women "pan-handling" on the streets of our small community being homeless...are they feeling that same kind of desperation? TMI, sorry.

Well, here it is March 25 and I have "bragged" (excitedly) about this project all the while we have been travelling the I 5 corridor here in Oregon. Think I may have recruited a couple of friends to look us up. Did Alisande decide to give up because of so few participating? (We left home March 9 and have not always had a WiFI connection or many down days) I have really found that writing (also journaling which I have done sporatically) just takes me to places and memories I have not expeced. That must be the Catharism" that folks talk about....facinating details of long forgotten events. Mind blowing at times. When we were in Alaska two years ago, the community of Palmer just " spoke" to me, I wanted to stay or return or delve into the background of the place. It was one of President FDR's programs to "grow and populate" the wilderness and I was completly hooked. So, in my writing I was so very surprised to find that I too was part of one of his "programs" to better the lives of such ordinary people who were right off the farms of the mid=west, willing to work and educate their children. I knew where I had been....but I didn't KNOW what it had been. Quite astonishing, really. So Thank you, Susan! And, I haven't even begun to explore those events in history that I have been so very close to and thought that I would just write those down so my kids would remember them thru my eyes. We will see, as I do plan to continue writing. Thank you again Nanny PS forgive the typos...love my mac, but the keyboard is just not compatible to me and my long fingernails, I think.

Re using names. I think you might want to use family/given names for close relations eg Grandpa Smith or Aunt Agnes as they will again anchor the information. As some of the stories might involve members of the wider community you might have to be a bit more careful with 'real' names' especially with such things as "Old Moses Brown, drunk as usual, fell off his horse into the duck pond thus disturbing the amorous goings on between Cousin Mildred and the farm-hand in a near-by hay stack " especially if the Browns are now pillars of the community who took the pledge 75 years ago and Mildred became a nun . . . but on the other hand . . . these tales when true do give colour to a community's way of life back then. Sheri's mention of a 'family tree' is good, thinking back to the times when I've read a 'family saga' and have to keep referring back to the tree to remind myself who-is-who!

They rode down a path

Hoping he could ignite her
And send her back to
La-La-Land where she belongs!
Instead, he ignited her passion
one kiss the dragon turned
her into big warty toad!

She looked down at herself
and actually liked her new
bumpy lumpy look, I think I'll
stuff myself into something revealing

Along came an ugly prince
Who had his eye on

She called upon Dr. Oz
