Cast iron vs swan stone vs silestone shower pan
Comments (10)I'm laughing at the idea that a shower is going to last 40 years and not need a remodel. And I'm surprised to hear that cast iron would need to be refinished. Maybe I'm naive? Anyway - how high end is this remodel? I have Swanstone for going on 20 years and it has held up perfectly, but I really want to replace it with something less functional and more attractive. Mine is Almond Galaxy - not a solid, but it still looks like plastic. Not nearly as nice as the walls which have a matte finish (also still looking great). I can't comment on Silestone - I actually didn't know they made a shower pan. But I'll bet its expensive. Why not use tile?...See MoreCast iron cookware and range choice?
Comments (21)The thing about cast iron is that it holds heat so there might be different heat ratios from bottom to top if you're using a cast iron pan uncovered.. If you're not used to using cast iron, and/or not used to using convection, you might have a learning curve. I would have thought that convection would even out uncovered cast iron, but I might be wrong. There is absolutely no reason not to use cast iron for any kind of cooking--just be aware that you'll have to figure out the right heat settings and timing. I don't know what "needs direct heat" means--if that's supposed to be needs to be on the stove, that's hooey--but I agree that preheating it for baking might be necessary or the top will be done before the pan gets hot. Re pots sticking, I had a cast iron pot in the oven, which I moved to my induction to finish. I knew it had bubbled over a lot in the oven, but didn't realize how much juice had gotten on the bottom. It was good and stuck after half an hour at a slow boil. I was scared that tugging too hard would damage the glass, so I just scooped out all the food, once it was done, and let everything cool. When it was cold, I just tugged (carefully) and it released. The remaining glop dissolved with a wet paper towel, and the cooked on bits came off with a plant fiber scrubby, no worse for the wear....See MoreKenmore smooth-top range
Comments (1)I would suggest new cookware. It would be much cheaper than a new range. Besides, it's time :-). I have a Kenmore Elite smooth top and my Calphalon cookware works great on it....See MoreCast Iron VS smooth top ranges
Comments (10)I use cast iron on my ceramic cook top all the time. That said, I DID manage to crack the top with a little help from my hubby: I'd left an empty skillet with the burner on under it (accidentally, obviously, and I was sick at the time, so I have a good excuse), and the skillet caught fire. Hubby found it and picked it up off the hot burner and set it, still flaming, on a cold burner. I'm not sure if it was the contrast in temperature or if he dropped it on the cook top (he probably grabbed the flaming skillet in his bare hands), but the crack runs all the way through the two eyes on the left side of the stove. I understand the top can be replaced, but I haven't done it yet, and the stove still cooks just fine on the two remaining eyes. Have to do something about it before canning season, though, because I'm afraid to put a big, heavy pressure canner on a cracked top :P...See Moresusan_on
