HANOVER, N.H. (CNN) A former U.S. surgeon general has died at the age of 96.

Dartmouth College announced the passing of former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.

He served as surgeon general from 1982 to 1989 and was known for his outspoken nature on public health issues.

Koop is best known for his work around AIDS.

He wrote a brochure about the disease that was sent to 107 million households in the United States, making it the largest public health mailing ever.

Koop is survived by his wife, three children and eight grandchildren.

I remember him well, and fondly. He made a lot of sense.

I worked with Dr. Koop during his last year as Surgeon General. He was a great man, and I have always had the utmost respect for him.

He's the one responsible for raising our consciousness about the dangers of smoking, isn't he? I believe that the warnings on cigarette packs were his idea. He also helped educate the woefully ignorant public about AIDS.

very vocal and public...rip....

He was very down to earth, telling us to eat better and exercise. He must have followed his own advice, considering he was 96.

I had no idea he was that old. He is the ONLY surgeon general whose name I remember, which means he made me pay attention. RIP.

Holy COW, time flies! I had NO IDEA he was that old, either. R.I.P. Dr. Koop.
