It depends. Two weeks ago we saw a young woman start to empty things out to reduce the size. The length still look too long.
I guess worse case, you have to check it.

Should fit under the seat. Just don't fly Spirit, $$$ for carry-on.

9x22x15 won't fit under the seat, but will fit in the overhead bin - unless it's an older plane in the fleet.

If that's the case, they will "gate check" the bag, and it will be returned to the flyer at the destination airport - in the jetway.

The bag will fit in the overhead bins...it wont fit under the seat...there is either a life vest under the seat or the compartment that holds the entertainment system for in seat videos...

I fly as a flight attendant...if you gate check a bag on Delta...it will be sent to baggage claim...we no longer bring back up luggage...only strollers and wheel chairs are brought back up to the arriving gate!

Depending on who your hubby is flying...have him try and board early so he gets an overhead bin spot!!

Yeah, he puts his bag in the overhead bin, not under the seat. (He stretches out his tootsies there, as much as they can stretch.) My main concern is whether the overhead bins will accommodate 15" width. Is an extra inch obnoxious (liz_ga?) I'll bet you have seen it all! You too, from a slightly different perspective, chloecat. It must have been a long time since OF has flown...nowadays, even FEET barely fit "under the seat in front of you."

One inch is nothing. There IS a "sizer" in the gate area, but I doubt anyone is gonna quibble or make you check it for an inch. You see LOTS bigger. Some people cause me to shake my head as I see them walking past me down the aisle. And these are often late boarders, too!!! They put them in the overheads lengthwise...wheels at the back. Most bins can handle 3 or 4 plus some other stuff on top of them. I like to be on board as soon as they will let me, and rarely even have luggage. Just wanna get to my seat, get belted in and watch the rest of the passengers walk by.

It's all very well for everyone to say "one inch is nothing" "others take bigger bags" and "it will fit in the overhead bin" but if they decide to check the bag for size and find it too big, you're SOL. More and more airlines are requiring carry on bags to fit into a cage which defines the size of the bag. If it won't go in or bits stick out of the top into the hold she goes.
There is no such thing as a bag created specifically for international flights as many airlines have different size requirements. The salesperson is talking through his/her hat- might believe this as some manufacturers claim it, but it is not so.
TripAdvisor's Air Travel forum is full of angsty posts about people with slightly oversized bags who ended up having to check them, sometimes for an extra baggage fee if the airline is one of the LCCs which do not include checked luggage in the ticket price.

90% of the time no one will check or notice. Yes it will fit in the bin if he is the first one in the bin..if he is the last--maybe not as most everyone else is also stretching the limits and may have already used up any "extra" space. What I saw flying is they will find a place to shove it in..it may not be anywhere near him but they will get it in vs take the time to send it under the plane by the time he boards. Bottom line you are adding stress to a stressful situation. The airline has stated their regs. Anyone who chooses to push the limits slows EVERYONE else down and takes the chance of being called on it. It is nice for you if you sneak on an extra carry on--it is not so nice for everyone else!! On and on these little fudges go..good luck.

you just have to know how to pack! I actually have a bag (cloth) that just a bit larger than a brief case...I rolled every bit of clothing as tight as I could...(before 9-11) and the tsa agent unzipped it said can I go thru it? I said sure...he looked at me again then rezipped it, lol...boy was I glad he didn't! it took me forever to get everything in...

the ironic thing my trip turned into 6 weeks and ended up buying another bag to go home (after 9-11), and was afraid to fly) as I had to buy extra..no checks on the train....

LOL - I only fly Southwest, so my statement above is still true for that carrier. :)

Hey liz, sorry, maybe I misunderstood in thinking you work for Delta?

There's an entertaining podcast "Betty in the Sky With A Suitcase" that's the creation of a flight attendant who I thought worked for Delta. Maybe not. I thought "Betty" was her real name, but also maybe not. I also would have figured she'd have gained some internal infamy among the Delta ranks but again, perhaps maybe not that either.

I think she's based out of Atlanta currently (yeah, I know, what else is new for a Delta FA).

It probably wouldn't be of interest to you, but the monthly episodes feature humorous and interesting anecdotes about the airline industry and the travelling public, told in interviews with her fellow attendants and pilots.
