I'm very sensitive to MSG and just don't like it in my food, but I'm using a recipe that calls for TWO cans of Beefy Mushroom soup. (This is for a crock-pot stew.) Is there a healthy alternative to Beefy Mushroom Soup (Campbells)? Would bouillon cubes work? I just need something *LIQUID* to add to this vegetable and meat stew. I'm making this on Friday, so it'll need to be something available at a grocery store. No time for mail order. Thanks for any help. Rose

I would make a homemade cream of mushroom soup, maybe with beef broth? This thread from the cooking forum has tons of recipes. I tried Ann's version and liked it, but I only use vegetable broth.
Here is a link that might be useful: Cream of Mushroom soup

Low-sodium beef stock plus some mushrooms. Water and some bouillon cubes (although I never use those - I use the Better than Bouillon stock base) Water and some red wine Water and some beer Really, whatever you want. It's just some liquid in a stew.

they do have a lower sodium broth in a box...add sauteed mushrooms, for flavor...if it's not thick enough add a bit of corn starch...i'm not sure about the msg, although i usually read lables...

rosemary thanks for the info..going to check other brands we use...it's always been a staple for us to have 2-3 brands of campbells in the pantry...

Can you use buillion cubes? Don't they have MSG? I'm sure I've had problems with some of those things in the past--and of course, it's so hard to identify MSG, anyway, since they 'hide' it under about 25 different names these days.

So many soups are LOADED with MSG and Campbells is the worst. In my old age, I've developed a sensitivity to it. Most unpleasant! Sad thing is, I just found out that Beef Bouillon cubes are also loaded with msg.
