Socks, what is the name of the medication the new vet prefers? It would be helpful to compare the labels. Seeing one flea doesn't mean a thing.

I have used Frontline Plus for years, but a few months ago got a flea infestation in the house and tapeworms in both dogs. My vet's office recommended using Comfortis along with the Frontline, since Comfortis does not control ticks.

My little dog takes Sentinel which controls fleas and heart worms.You can order all pet meds from reputable online sources you just need a copy of the vets order for it. And often times it is cheaper. If you want to stick with something you know which works well with your dog just order it online or buy it from another vet. As long as you have the prescription for it you can get it. And your vet should not have a problem giving you a prescription. Here are a few options at reputable sites. You can also get them at your local Petsmart and Petco at the vet clinic inside if your store has one and they carry that brand.

My question is did the vet tell you why he no longer carries it? It may be because it has been associated with deaths in dogs.
If you google it you can find several incidents. If that is a concern of the vets then maybe it is time to consider something else? I know many of these types of meds can cause reactions in animals. Here is the google for you.

The vet recommends two products:

A new one called Nexgard which is made by Frontline.

Trifexis which is the same as Comfortis but has extra protection against heartworm (rare here, but we do have it more and more) and various internal parasites.

I just went over the dog with a fine toothed comb (literally) and did not find one flea. I know they jump on and off, but some have to be "on" right?

I think I'll wait a bit longer and continue to watch for fleas and then make a decision.

I have used Frontline on my dogs and cats and find it getting less effective. I use Sentinel on the dogs.

Many vets will match internet or mail order prices so as not to lose your business. The time to ask is when you request that they send the prescription elsewhere.

I use Trifexis, its also for heart worms. Very good, I never see a flea. Get it from your vet.

I don't use flea preventative in the winter here.Once every thing thaws out in April, I will start again. I do use the heart worm preventative year round.

Frontline and Heartguard for Eliot. Year 'round. He's just turned 14 -- we *think* -- because he was a Westie rescue born in a puppy mill. He CAME with "chicken lice".

I've never heard of "chicken lice," but my bird had lice once. Probably same or similar. How yucky for Eliot. Lucky him to find a loving home with you.

Last night I did find a flea on Oski so I guess I better get hopping and get something going today before kitty gets them too. Maybe the Trifexis.

The new vet that took over my regular vet's office after she was murdered is no longer carrying the Sentinal that I use she is wanting me to switch to Trifexis. But she told me it has to be given with food, that would be very difficult to manage with my little dog. She is a free feeder and does not always eat when I put her food out and will not eat on command and there is not a treat that she will eat, I have bought tons of them. The Sentinal is tiny and I can just put it down her throat. So I managed to buy a years worth of the remaining Sentinal they had left in their office but after that I have to make a decision too. Mine has such a sensitive stomach I really hate to make changes.

Can't you get Sentinel somewhere else? Pet store or online?

Oski does not like treats either. Turns his head away like I offered him something disgusting. Even Paul Newmans peanut butter treats are not accepted. He likes bits of cheese especially string cheese.

Raven, just out of curiosity, have you ever offered your dog canned veggies? I used to get pills in mine via canned peas. :-)

yes I have and even fresh ones. I had a friend here for a while whose little dog is diabetic and she fed her green beans and carrots and peas as treats. Mia was very interested since that dog loved them and I thought ok this might make her eat something like that. She tried it once and spit it out LOL.
She has always had a sensitive stomach since she showed up here and had been living on bugs and roots and was so skinny.
Now she eats chicken breast that I cook for her, boneless skinless and steamed so there is no fat, then I put it in the food processor. I mix her probiotics in each bowl. She also has Blue Buffalo crunchy food that she will occasionally munch on. On a rare occasion she might take a tiny bite of cheese but no guarantees. She would however eat meat from our dinner plate if we allowed her but then she would pay for it in tummy problems. She has reflux and takes pepcid and pepto for those bouts.

Yes I can try to get the Sentinal elsewhere and probably will do that. I just wish they would continue to keep things as they were at the clinic. It has been hard on customers and animals to have lost our wonderful vet and now have to make changes.

I was wondering if any one else using the Trifexis has had any problems with it for their dog?
