I love Facebook. I find it is a good way to keep up with my cousins' kids and also friends across the country.

What I think of FB is this: FB keeps my family connected all across the country. It lets all of the cousins get to know each other and communicate with each other. It gives us a place to share old family stories and old family pictures.

I can't fathom what sort of 'problems' deactivation might have....

I joined at the request of a friend. I wasn't impressed. Anyone that I really want to keep in contact with I like to do with email, phone calls, etc. I got so much information from friends that I truly wasn't interested in. Soooo many invitations to play this game or that, water someone's plant (WTH?), etc. One of my friends sent a message out to all of her friends telling them that if they got an email from her saying "such and such", that it wasn't really from her, it was false. Then one of my brothers told me that when he accepted my invitation, his computer was bombarded with virus-type stuff. That was it for me. I deactivated my account because I didn't want to be in any way responsible for something like that.

No problems after deactivating my account.

I have a FB account and am admin for our church's FB account along with our pastor... It is a great medium to enjoy and keep up with what is happening in our lives.

I occasionally play Family Feud with another group of ladies from church... it seems better than watching what's on tv these days.

well deleting a facebook account is not really easy. You can deactivate it but believe me that is not the end of it! that does NOT delete it or your info. I try to make everyone understand you MUST take a lot of steps and effort to get this task done which should be a simple thing but they really don't want you to go so get ready to jump through those hoops!

WOW, ravencajun! It did bother me somewhat to have to provide my last name when signing up. What kind of data are they trying to hold onto? All I've done is deactivate. Does this mean I should sign back in and try to accomplish a full delete? What can they do with my data? Does this mean they have my IP address?

Anyplace you post has your IP address.

The only other data they have is what you gave them.

I would go through the process for a full delete not just leave it at deactivated.

I THINK I closed my FB account about a year ago. That was after a vicious virus was picked up. I followed their steps. and eventually it was supposed to be closed.

When you deactivate the FB account, it is still there, just not being used. There is an amount of time that it must sit inactive. If you sign in , or your curiosity catches up with you so you take a peek -- you are activated again!
I managed to stay away from it for the length of time needed, and then I received a notice from them about deactivating/ closing (I don't remember which term) the account unless I responded to the email.

I honestly don't know what my status is over there, because about a month ago I suddenly got 2 requests to be friends. I didn't answer either, so I hope it is closed.

Before I closed the account I went in and made as many changes in my info as I was able, so what ever info they had was no longer correct.

I've taken 'breaks' from Facebook a few times by deactivating my account. When I wanted it back again, I had no problem re-activating it.

I personally love facebook. I have connected with so many relatives on my dad's side that I didn't even know I had. Actually every single one of them. A niece found me and it snow balled from there. And old classmates too. There are many ways to keep things private thru settings. I spend more time on facebook than almost every other site I go to. Flickr is my second most visited site.

You can permantly delete your a/c at the link below. It's at the Facebook site. I just did it after finding out that I was just "deactivated". Hogwash.
I had Facebook for about 2 weeks. Waaaay too much info was available. Thankfully, I did not use my real name.
I've said here before that I now know many of your real names and where you live because you all "friended" a friend who "friended" me. I could see all pics, conversations, etc. Scary, huh?

Honestly, if anyone wants to look at the pictures of my cats and flowers on FB, they're welcome to waste their time. ;)

If you don't want everyone to see your pictures and/or posts, set your privacy setting to allow friends only and choose only friends that you really want.

And don't post anything that you consider too personal.

Glad for the detailed info on deleting a Facebook account - I knew it wasn't as simple as just deactivating.

Personally, I love Facebook. The objections I hear from most people who don't like it could be dealt with simply by adjusting privacy preferences, though if you're not impressed by the whole idea, that won't matter.

I have my privacy preferences honed to a sharp edge, and I see very little that I don't care about. I also check the option for "view your profile as XXX" to make sure that others can't see more than I want about me.

Hi again. This has been a good, well-rounded conversation. Other than a little concern on privacy issues, I liked Facebook. Take that for what it is worth from someone who was there less than two weeks. LOL. My personal experience was "you don't know if it's for you until you try it" and realizing that I prefer smaller, more intimate groups. As to wondering if there were any problems occuring with deactivation, I had read of those who continued getting email, especially ads.

Thanks to those who said how much they love it. That is quite understandable if your family is spread far and wide; mine is not, we are fortunate to have most everyone very close at hand, easy for us to visit each other or to pick up the phone. That is far from true for most today. Am also not interested in the games features.

Thanks also for the info on deletion. Admittedly, I did not know that deactivation did not mean all my information would be gone and appreciate knowing that. This is a great place for hearing all angles and allowing one to make more informed decisions. You are all terrific!

I love Facebook. I like so many others can keep up with friends and family near and far. When the earthquake hit New Zealand..it wasn't long before a friend posted she and her family were safe..
When we had severe storms move thru the area last night and the local stations were covering Memphis...we were able to get our updates on what was happening here on FB.

If you don't want to see game feeds..all you have to do is block it and they will no longer show on your page. Dont want to see Cousin Sues daily habits posted..once again block her..It will still show up as friends, but you will no longer see what she/he posts.

Some people will find FB is not for them...and that is fine difference is what makes the world go around.

I went on face book I used totally different ID, fake name, address, etc..

At one time my niece created a site for family, nothing like face book. You could leave it open or make it for family only. She posted photos of her family and I did the same and we visited back and forth. I don't know if those are still available or not.
